Yes—but the headline needs two qualifications. Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max became the first Pro-series iPhones assembled in India, with reported production at Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu facility. The rollout was phased around the September 2024 launch, so the milestone does not mean every launch-day phone, or every unit sold worldwide, was assembled there.
What was new about iPhone 16 production in India?
Apple had assembled iPhones in India before 2024; the iPhone 16 Pro was not the first iPhone made there. The change was that both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max were the first Pro-tier models reported to be assembled in the country. Bloomberg reported Apple’s plan on August 20, 2024, citing people familiar with the matter: Bloomberg’s report on the first India-assembled Pro models.

Subsequent reports described trial assembly and preparations at Foxconn, with the manufacturing ramp tied to Apple’s new-product-introduction process. That distinction matters: a plan to assemble a new model is not the same as saying all units were already coming off local lines when preorders opened.

Foxconn, formally Hon Hai Precision Industry, was the reported contract manufacturer at its facility in or near Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, outside Chennai. Apple designed and owned the product; Foxconn handled manufacturing and assembly. The available reporting supports an Indian final-assembly milestone, not a claim that every component or raw material came from India. The Economic Times report on Foxconn’s trial assembly described the specialized production work involved.
#1 Best Overall
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
- Assembly location: Reported to be Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu operation.
- Component origin: Not established by the assembly reports; components may come from a broader international supply chain.
- Sales destination: Indian-assembled phones were intended for both domestic sales and exports, according to Business Standard’s reporting on overseas shipments.
“Assembled in India” is therefore more precise than interpreting “made in India” to mean that the phone was wholly manufactured from locally sourced parts.
When did Indian assembly begin relative to launch?
Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro lineup on September 9, 2024. Its official announcement set preorders for September 13 and retail availability for September 20 in India and other first-wave markets. Apple’s announcement confirms the product and launch details, but does not state where the phones were assembled: Apple’s September 2024 announcement.

Before launch, reporting said Foxconn was training workers and preparing the new-product-introduction process; early inventory could be imported while local production ramped up. Reports later described trial assembly in India. The evidence supports a phased transition, not a blanket claim that every iPhone 16 Pro available in India on September 20 was locally assembled. MacRumors’ summary of the pre-launch reporting covered the possible imported launch inventory.
Did India-made iPhones go only to Indian buyers?
No. Indian production was reported to serve the domestic market and export destinations. That does not establish that every country, retailer, or configuration received India-assembled stock. Apple can source the same product family from more than one manufacturing location, and the origin of a particular unit cannot be inferred from the model name alone.

Why was Pro-series assembly a significant step?
Apple’s India manufacturing had expanded beyond earlier iPhone models to its premium Pro lineup. Contemporary reporting characterized Pro production as requiring specialized assembly lines and greater technical expertise, reflecting the demands of premium finishing, complex camera systems, and tighter production tolerances. It was a capability milestone for the manufacturing operation, not evidence that every high-value component was produced locally.
The move also fit Apple’s broader effort to diversify production beyond China, expand its Indian manufacturing and export base, and serve India’s growing premium-phone market. Government production-linked incentives were part of the wider policy context. Reporting on Apple’s strategy described an expansion of Indian capacity alongside continued reliance on a global supply chain—not a complete relocation of iPhone production out of China. What did Apple announce about the phones?
Apple’s launch announcement listed an A18 Pro chip, titanium design, Camera Control, 48-megapixel Fusion and Ultra Wide cameras, a 5x Telephoto camera on both Pro models, and 4K 120 fps Dolby Vision video. Apple listed India launch prices of ₹119,900 for iPhone 16 Pro and ₹144,900 for iPhone 16 Pro Max. Those were September 2024 launch prices, not current prices. The announcement did not say those specifications depended on assembly location.

What should buyers check on an individual phone?
The manufacturing country of a particular handset cannot be established from the product name alone. A buyer who needs to know should inspect the specific unit’s box and regulatory or manufacturing markings, and check its model or part number and seller disclosures. Packaging and markings can vary by market and production batch; do not assume the phone itself will display a country-of-origin inscription.
Best Value
- The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
- Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
- Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
- Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
- Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
For a purchase, manufacturing origin is only one detail. Regional model numbers can differ in cellular-band support or SIM configuration, while warranty and service terms depend on Apple’s policies and the product’s sales region. Imported, refurbished, and gray-market stock may have a different provenance from official local retail inventory. The available reporting does not establish a core specification or quality difference between equivalent India-assembled and other units.
