Investopedia listed Become a Day Trader among the first courses offered by Investopedia Academy when the platform launched in 2017. That announcement does not confirm the course is still available or establish its current curriculum, instructor, price, refund terms, or certificate. Verify those details directly with Investopedia Academy before paying—and weigh any course against the substantial risks and costs of day trading.

Is Investopedia Academy’s Become a Day Trader course still available?

Investopedia’s September 19, 2017 announcement described Investopedia Academy as an online education platform and named Become a Day Trader among its initial courses. It is historical evidence that the course was offered at launch, not confirmation of a current product. The announcement does not establish today’s availability or purchase terms. Read the 2017 launch announcement.

Current official course details could not be confirmed. Before purchasing, check the course page or contact Investopedia Academy directly. Do not rely on a third-party course copy or listing to establish current availability, features, or terms.

What to check before paying for any day-trading course

A course can explain concepts and processes; it cannot make trading profitable or remove market risk. The SEC cautions that day trading is highly risky and warns that educational classes and books may not be objective. Evaluate the offer itself rather than treating a course title or sales claim as evidence of likely results.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

Confirm what you will actually receive

  • Current curriculum, including whether it covers order types, trading strategies, risk controls, and the rules relevant to your account.
  • Instructor identity, relevant qualifications, and any stated trading or education experience.
  • Price, payment schedule, refund policy, access period, and whether updates or support are included.
  • Whether the course offers practice or simulation tools, and what those tools do and do not represent about live trading.

For Investopedia Academy’s named course, those current details are not established by the 2017 launch announcement.

Look for a serious treatment of costs and downside

The SEC describes day trading as stressful and expensive, with expenses that can include commissions, training, and computers. It advises prospective traders to calculate in advance how much they need to cover expenses and break even. A course that discusses possible gains but does not explain trading costs, losses, and break-even math leaves out essential parts of the decision.

Ask whether the educator or any speaker benefits if you open a brokerage account, trade more often, or buy additional services. The SEC specifically advises readers to consider whether course instructors, seminar speakers, or book authors stand to profit if they start trading. Be wary of easy-profit claims; the SEC recommends asking firms how many clients lost money and how many made profits. See the SEC’s day-trading guidance.

Understand the financial risk before opening an account

Day trading means buying and selling rapidly within a day in an attempt to capture short-term price movements. The SEC says traders typically suffer severe financial losses in their first months, many never become profitable, and only money one can afford to lose should be put at risk. Do not use money needed for living expenses, retirement, or student loans.

Borrowing to trade or using margin can magnify losses. The SEC warns traders may lose all their money and end up in debt. A lesson or simulated practice account does not make borrowed-money risk disappear. The SEC advises understanding the amount needed to cover expenses and break even before trading.

The available sources do not establish a recent, directly applicable study quantifying the profitability rate of individual day traders. Avoid treating an old or unrelated statistic as a current estimate of your odds.

U.S. day-trading margin rules are in transition

As of October 8, 2026, Investor.gov says FINRA’s new intraday margin requirements took effect on June 4, 2026, replacing the prior day-trading margin requirements. Firms have a transition period through October 20, 2027: a broker may continue using the old requirements during that period or move to the new standards earlier. Your broker’s current implementation determines which requirements apply to your account. Contact the firm before trading. Investor.gov’s pattern-day-trader page explains the transition.

Why the familiar $25,000 rule needs a date and qualification

Investor.gov still describes the former pattern-day-trader framework: four or more day trades in five business days, when those trades make up more than 6% of total margin-account trades during that period, designated a customer as a pattern day trader under the old rules. The old framework required designated traders to maintain at least $25,000 in a margin account. Those figures describe the prior requirements; they should not be presented as a uniform current rule during the transition.

The SEC’s January 8, 2021 bulletin describes a day trade under that older framework as buying and selling, or selling and buying, the same security in one day in a margin account; it includes options and short sales followed by covering the same day. The bulletin now flags the 2026 change. For current requirements, check with your broker and consult Investor.gov’s updated explanation and the SEC bulletin on margin rules for day trading.

How to decide whether a course is worth considering

Assess a course on verifiable content and terms, not a promise of trading results. Before paying, make sure you can answer these questions:

  • Can you verify the provider’s current offer, price, refund policy, instructor, and curriculum directly?
  • Does the material explain risk, leverage, trading expenses, and break-even calculations as clearly as strategies?
  • Are conflicts of interest disclosed, including incentives tied to brokerage accounts, trading activity, or further purchases?
  • Do you understand the account rules your broker currently applies and the possibility of losing more than your initial investment when using margin?
  • Can you afford to lose the money you plan to risk without affecting essential expenses, retirement savings, or debt obligations?

If the provider cannot answer basic questions clearly, or the sales pitch emphasizes easy profits while minimizing losses and costs, do not treat the course as a substitute for careful financial decision-making.
