InvestGame’s reported 2020 game-industry deal total was $33.6 billion across 664 transactions. That figure describes reported dealmaking—not video game sales, company revenue, or what players spent. The mix included acquisitions, private investment, and public-market activity, which should not be treated as interchangeable categories.
What the $33.6 billion figure measures
The total comes from InvestGame’s Global Video Game Deals Report 2020, as reported by PocketGamer.biz. It is an aggregate of reported transaction values in the games and game-platform deal universe, rather than a measure of the industry’s operating income or consumer market. GamesBeat says InvestGame tracked closed transactions, excluded gambling and pure betting companies, and estimated some private deal values when amounts were undisclosed. GamesBeat’s report and PocketGamer.biz’s coverage both attribute the figures to InvestGame.
The transaction count has a small reporting discrepancy: PocketGamer.biz reports 664, as does GamesBeat’s headline, while GamesBeat’s opening paragraph says 665. The title’s 664 follows the report figure as reproduced by PocketGamer.biz and the GamesBeat headline; the discrepancy is a reason to treat the count as a reported tally, not as a precise reconciliation of every deal entry.
How the reported deal categories fit together
The available reporting presents several distinct groupings. They should not be added together unless the underlying methodology establishes that the categories are mutually exclusive and comparable.

| Category as reported | Value | Count | What it represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Closed M&A | $12.6 billion | 219 deals | Acquisitions and other mergers-and-acquisitions transactions reported as closed. |
| Closed venture and corporate investment | $5.9 billion | 363 deals | Closed venture and corporate investment deals. |
| Video game IPOs | $2.8 billion | 18 IPOs | Public offerings reported separately from the closed venture and corporate investment figure. |
| Venture, corporate, and public investments | $8 billion | 194 transactions | A separate aggregate grouping reported by GamesBeat; its relationship to the other investment counts is not fully specified in the accessible coverage. |
These figures are from GamesBeat’s account of InvestGame’s report. In particular, the 363 closed venture and corporate deals, 18 IPOs, and 194 transactions in the broader investment grouping are not a set of counts that can safely be summed or reconciled from the published summary alone.
Closed acquisitions versus announced deals
InvestGame’s reported closed M&A total was $12.6 billion across 219 deals. GamesBeat says the value would rise to $22.2 billion if announced but not closed transactions were included. Microsoft’s announced $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax was one example cited in that context. The difference illustrates why “deal value” depends on whether a tally counts only completed transactions or also pending announcements.

Investment and public-market activity
Private venture and corporate investment, an IPO, and other public-market activity involve different transaction types. GamesBeat separately reports 18 video game IPOs worth $2.8 billion and an $8 billion total across 194 venture, corporate, and public investment transactions. Because the article reports these as separate category groupings and does not supply the full classification rules, they are best read as reported figures rather than components to recombine independently.
Which countries and acquirers featured prominently
PocketGamer.biz reports that the United States represented 36% of total deal value and China 27%; each country had four of the ten largest transactions. These shares describe value, not the number of deals in each country. PocketGamer.biz does not provide a complete country-by-country breakdown in the reported summary.

GamesBeat names Tencent, Embracer, Stillfront, and Zynga among the leading acquirers and says the four together accounted for 60% of total deal value. That is a concentration measure for the reported deal market, not evidence that these companies generated 60% of game-industry revenue. Examples mentioned in contemporaneous coverage include Zynga’s acquisition of Peak Games and Tencent’s acquisition of Leyou.
Why the headline needs context
- It is not a sales figure. A transaction-value aggregate counts deals, not copies sold, subscriptions, in-game purchases, or company revenue.
- Closing status matters. Including announced transactions changes the M&A value substantially; the $12.6 billion figure is for closed deals.
- Category definitions matter. M&A, private investment, IPOs, and public investments are distinct kinds of activity, and the accessible reports do not publish a full dataset to reconcile them.
- Some values are estimates. GamesBeat says InvestGame estimated some private deal amounts when they were undisclosed, so the total is not necessarily a sum of publicly disclosed prices.
- The historical baseline is limited. GamesBeat says InvestGame began tracking in 2020, limiting direct year-over-year comparisons using this dataset.
What the pandemic context does—and does not—show
Contemporaneous reporting connected the activity with the pandemic-era environment, but the available figures do not prove that COVID-19 caused the deal total or any specific investment trend. GamesBeat quoted InvestGame cofounder Sergei Evdokimov saying, “In terms of the early-stage investments, you can definitely see the COVID impact,” and participant Anton Gorodetsky saying, “There was a lot of money outside the market that came into the gaming market.” These are attributed observations, not a causal analysis of the full $33.6 billion total.
