Wylab is a sports-tech incubator and innovation hub in Chiavari, Liguria, founded in 2016 by people associated with Wyscout. It was launched as what its founders and contemporary coverage described as Italy’s first dedicated sports-tech incubator. The original model combined startup selection, acceleration, longer-term incubation, mentoring, investor access and coworking. Wylab’s current public offering is broader: it now includes incubation, business development, open innovation, corporate training, events and workspace.
What Wylab was when it launched
Wylab opened in Chiavari on Italy’s northwest coast in 2016. A May 10, 2016 launch report presented it as Italy’s first incubator focused specifically on sports technology. That wording is best understood as an attributed positioning claim, not as an independently audited national designation. Wylab’s own site still uses the “first Italian incubator” description.
The launch was designed around a specialized ecosystem rather than a generic office. Startups working on technology for sport would share space with developers, designers, agencies and other businesses while receiving structured support and introductions to the sports industry.
The launch article also reported a €600,000 modernization investment in the building. That figure belongs to the 2016 account and should not be read as a current operating or investment budget.

The Wyscout connection
Contemporary coverage described Wylab as an initiative created by people behind Wyscout, the football-scouting and analysis company. Wylab’s current material identifies Matteo Campodonico as Wyscout’s founder and presents him discussing Wylab’s role in supporting startups.
The strategic link is practical. Wyscout’s team had experience building software used in professional football and taking a sports product to an international market. Wylab was intended to transfer that operating knowledge, relationships and credibility to other founders. The available sources support describing the organizations as connected; they do not establish that Wylab is simply a Wyscout subsidiary.
What the original program offered
The 2016 launch announcement described a two-stage pathway. It received more than 70 applications, including submissions from Azerbaijan, Australia, the United States, France and Argentina, and expected to select approximately four or five startups. Projects covered football, boxing, tennis, volleyball and basketball.

Acceleration generally means an intensive period of validation, market testing, mentoring and investor preparation. Incubation usually lasts longer and concentrates on forming the company, developing the product, building operations and accessing infrastructure. Wylab’s launch structure used both labels, but its current pages do not confirm the same 16-month schedule or investment ceiling.

Which sports problems Wylab targeted
The original concept treated “sports technology” as a set of customer problems:
- Athletes: performance, training and related data tools.
- Teams: scouting, analytics, recruitment, operations and strategy.
- Leagues and federations: competition management and governance technology.
- Fans: engagement, media and audience experiences.
- Investors and corporates: finding and testing emerging technologies.
That focus gave Wylab a narrower but potentially more useful proposition than a general startup center: founders could seek domain contacts and feedback from people who understood sports operations.
Why coworking was part of the model
Coworking was not an unrelated rental business. In the launch concept, startups worked beside professionals, web specialists, designers, agencies and small companies. The intended benefit was informal knowledge exchange and collaboration, with a chance for a product team to meet people who could help it design, market or implement a service.
Today Wylab markets coworking to freelancers, remote workers, startups, companies, mentors and technology-oriented professionals. Its English page describes more than 1,500 square metres and 150 workstations, although that page also contains incomplete numerical fields; treat those capacity figures as advertised information to confirm directly.

Where Wylab stands today
Wylab’s current incubator pages describe a platform that supports both aspiring entrepreneurs and more mature Italian or international startups testing scalability. Listed services include:
- Incubation and business development
- Networking with sports and business stakeholders

- Communication, content and digital services
- Mentoring and tutoring
- Fundraising support
- Coworking and physical spaces
Wylab says it connects startups with clubs, leagues, federations, companies, media, investors, universities and research centres, helping them validate business models, products and market potential. Public pages refer to pre-seed and seed “follower” investment, but they do not provide a dependable current portfolio total, ticket size, equity policy or success rate.
How the organization expanded beyond sport
Wylab’s present identity is wider than the 2016 sports-incubator label. Its homepage groups activity into open innovation, academy and tailored corporate training, incubator services and coworking. The open-innovation page describes calls and projects in areas including the sea economy, food and tourism, creativity and design, sustainability and the environment.
The homepage also highlights 2026 activity such as Innovation Talks, the Empirìa project involving Crédit Agricole Italia and Le Village by CA Triveneto, and a retrospective on Wylab’s first ten years. These activities suggest a sports-tech-origin organization that now also acts as an innovation partner, educator and event platform.

Wylab and WeSportUp
Wylab’s WeSportUp page describes it as the local partner for a sports and wellness accelerator, with Federico Smanio identified there as program director. The page refers to the 2022 edition, initial funding of €2.85 million from CDP Venture Capital and Startupbootcamp as operating manager.
Those details describe that historical program and do not prove that the same funding or operating arrangement remains in force in 2026. WeSportUp should not be presented as Wylab’s own standalone fund.
Who is Federico Smanio?
An event-organizer biography identifies Federico Smanio as Wylab’s CEO and describes him as a former professional footballer with experience in professional sport, startup advising and sports innovation. The same biography says he has been WeSportUp’s program director since 2022. Because this information comes from an event organizer rather than a Wylab corporate page, treat it as attributed biography rather than a complete company record.

Wylab is most relevant when your product has a genuine connection to sport, performance, fan experience, sports operations, wellness or a related innovation area. It may be useful to an idea-stage founder, an early startup seeking validation, or a more mature venture testing scale.

- Check stage fit: identify whether you need company formation, product validation, pilots or scale support.
- Check access needs: decide whether introductions to clubs, federations, investors, corporates or universities would materially help.
- Check capital expectations: separate fundraising support from a promise that Wylab will invest.
- Check geography: assess whether a Chiavari-based network and physical presence work for your team.
- Request current terms: confirm dates, fees, equity, investment instrument, ticket size, deliverables, selection criteria and presence requirements.
Public pages do not specify current cohort dates, acceptance rates, equity requirements or a complete portfolio. A founder seeking a large generalist venture fund may therefore need additional financing relationships, while a team needing a major club pilot outside Italy should verify the relevant introductions rather than assume they are included.
For an established company
Wylab’s open-innovation and academy services may fit companies seeking startup scouting, innovation calls, corporate entrepreneurship projects or tailored training. This is a consulting, ecosystem and education proposition, not an off-the-shelf software product; pricing is not publicly stated.
For a coworking customer
The coworking offer may suit a freelancer, remote worker, startup or local team that values a sports-oriented community and physical workspace. Indexed pages show day access from €20 and meeting rooms from €35 on the Italian page, while the English page lists private rooms from €400 and advertises 24/7 access. The billing period and plan inclusions are not clear enough to treat these as interchangeable prices.
Location and practical checks
Wylab’s incubator page lists Via Davide Gagliardo 7, Chiavari. Its Italian coworking page says it is temporarily operating at Viale Millo 12/1. This apparent relocation should be confirmed before visiting or signing a workspace agreement.

Bottom line
Wylab helped give Italy’s emerging sports-technology sector a dedicated home when it launched in 2016, using experience associated with Wyscout to combine incubation, acceleration, industry access and coworking. The four-month acceleration, 12-month incubation and potential €100,000 investment were launch-era terms, not current promises. Today, Wylab is better understood as a broader Chiavari-based innovation platform: sports-tech incubation plus open innovation, corporate education, events, mentoring, fundraising support and workspace.
