An international payment can involve more than one provider, payment system and currency conversion, so a displayed transfer fee rarely tells you the whole cost. Before sending, compare how much the recipient is expected to receive, when the money should arrive, what tracking is available and what the provider’s terms say for the specific countries and payout method.

What counts as an international payment?

An international, or cross-border, payment is a transfer that crosses jurisdictions. It may pass through banks, non-bank payment service providers (PSPs) and linked payment systems. A person sending money to family, a customer paying an overseas merchant and a financial institution transferring funds to another institution are all making cross-border payments, but they are not the same kind of transaction. This guide focuses on practical questions for personal transfers and business payments; large-value transfers between financial institutions have different operational and regulatory considerations.

The Financial Stability Board (FSB) identifies four persistent system-level challenges: high costs, low speed, limited access and insufficient transparency. These describe problems the global payments system is trying to address, not a prediction that any particular transfer will be costly or delayed. FSB overview of cross-border payments.

How much will the recipient get?

Start with the amount expected to arrive, not just the sending fee. The provider’s exchange rate affects the conversion, and receiving or intermediary charges may also apply. Compare the same sending amount, destination currency and payout method across services available in both countries. Ask whether the quoted amount is guaranteed or an estimate, and whether additional charges can be deducted before the recipient is paid.

  • Sending amount: how much you authorize in your currency.
  • Exchange rate: the rate used to convert into the recipient’s currency and when that rate is fixed.
  • Charges: any sending, receiving or intermediary fees disclosed for that transfer.
  • Amount received: the net figure the recipient is expected to get after conversion and applicable charges.

Remittance prices vary by corridor and date. The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide resource is a place to check remittance costs, but a global policy target should not be mistaken for a current market average or a quote for your transfer.

How long does an international money transfer take?

Delivery depends on the specific countries, provider, receiving method, operating hours and other requirements. Check the estimate for the exact corridor and payout method. An estimate is not a guarantee unless the provider’s terms say it is. Also distinguish when a payment is initiated from when funds are available for the recipient to use.

Faster systems and links between payment systems can improve speed in corridors where they operate, but those benefits are not universal. The Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) identifies payment-system interoperability and extension, cross-border data exchange and message standards, and legal, regulatory and supervisory frameworks as priority areas in the G20 roadmap. Starting points and implementation differ across countries. CPMI cross-border payments programme.

What fees and exchange rate apply?

There is no single worldwide fee or exchange rate for international payments. The total cost depends on the provider’s pricing and conversion rate, the corridor, the amount and the way the recipient is paid. Before confirming, look for the total cost and net amount received, including disclosed sending, receiving and intermediary charges and foreign-exchange conversion charges. The FSB’s transparency target calls for providers to disclose these elements, along with expected delivery time, tracking status and terms of service by the end of 2027; it is a policy objective, not proof that every provider already presents them consistently.

The FSB has also set future-facing cost objectives: a global average retail payment cost of no more than 1%, with no corridor above 3%, by the end of 2027; and a global average cost of sending a $200 remittance of no more than 3% by 2030, with no corridor above 5%. These targets are not today’s prices or a guarantee that a specific transfer will meet them. The remittance objective reflects the UN Sustainable Development Goal reaffirmed by the FSB. FSB 2024 update on cross-border payment targets.

How can you track an international payment?

Tracking depends on the provider and transfer. Before sending, check whether it offers status updates, what information is needed to access them and what the status terms mean. Save the confirmation or reference details. If the payment is delayed or the recipient cannot identify it, contact the provider using its official support channel and give the transfer reference. Review the provider’s terms for what happens when details are incorrect, a transfer is delayed or cancellation is requested. Do not assume a payment can be reversed once sent.

How to compare providers for your transfer

  1. Confirm availability: check that the service supports the sender’s and recipient’s countries, currencies and intended receiving method.
  2. Compare the net result: enter the same amount and compare the total disclosed cost, conversion rate and recipient amount.
  3. Check timing: review the expected delivery time for that corridor and payout method, noting whether it is an estimate or a stated guarantee.
  4. Review tracking and terms: find how to check status and what the provider says about mistakes, delays and cancellation.
  5. Verify the details: confirm the recipient information and transfer amount before authorizing payment.

Banks have historically played a major role in cross-border payments, while non-bank PSPs have expanded consumer options in some jurisdictions. Neither type is inherently cheaper, faster or safer: compare the actual offer and terms for your transfer. Regulation and supervision vary by country, and there is no single comprehensive global framework for payment services to consumers and businesses or prudential oversight of non-bank PSPs. In December 2024 the FSB issued recommendations intended to improve consistency while keeping oversight proportionate to risks and business models. What digital payment standards can—and cannot—do

ISO 20022 is an international financial messaging standard. It can support more consistent, structured payment data and interoperability, but it does not by itself make every transfer instant, inexpensive or universally trackable. The benefits depend on how systems implement the standard and align the data they exchange. CPMI’s harmonised data guidance is intended for payment-system operators and participants; it is guidance, not a regulation. CPMI guidance on ISO 20022 harmonisation.

APIs and interlinked fast payment systems are also part of the infrastructure effort. Their practical effect depends on systems being connected, as well as access rules, operating hours, data requirements and the corridor. The CPMI and FSB reported in 2026 that their 2025 monitoring survey received responses from 82 jurisdictions. That is the survey’s scope—not a count showing how many jurisdictions provide a particular service or deliver a particular consumer outcome. 2025 consolidated progress report.

What global improvement targets mean for an individual payment

The FSB’s objectives include making funds available within one hour of initiation for 75% of cross-border retail payments by the end of 2027, with the remainder available within one business day. For remittances, the target is for that one-hour outcome in every corridor for 75% of payments, with the remainder within one business day. Its access objective is for more than 90% of individuals who wish to send or receive a remittance to have access to electronic cross-border remittance by the end of 2027. These are system-wide goals, not service-level promises to an individual sender or recipient. Check the provider’s current quote and terms for your transaction.
