Mercury Research estimates reported for Q4 2021 show AMD losing desktop unit share while gaining overall x86 unit share; a later Q1 2022 estimate put AMD’s overall x86 share higher still. Retail sales, shipment estimates and a gaming-PC survey measured different populations, so their results are not interchangeable.
What the market-share figures actually show
The clearest evidence of an Alder Lake effect is in consumer desktops. Mercury Research estimates, as reported in 2022 by Tom’s Hardware and PCWorld, put AMD’s desktop processor unit share at 16.2% in Q4 2021. That was down 0.8 percentage points from the prior quarter and 3.1 points from a year earlier. The same reporting said Alder Lake had begun to have a material effect in consumer desktop PCs.
That desktop result did not mean AMD was losing share in every x86 category. Mercury Research put AMD’s overall x86 unit share at 25.6% in Q4 2021, up 1.0 percentage point quarter over quarter and 3.9 points year over year. Overall x86 includes more than consumer desktop processors, so it can move differently from desktop share.

The Q4 figures are Mercury Research estimates as reported by Tom’s Hardware and PCWorld in 2022; the Q1 2022 figure is Mercury Research reporting cited by Tom’s Hardware. The underlying full Mercury Research reports are not available in the cited reporting, so these numbers should be understood as attributed estimates, not as figures independently reproduced here.

Why a fall in desktop share could coexist with an overall AMD gain
Market share depends on the market boundary and the measurement. A desktop unit-share estimate does not answer the same question as overall x86 unit share, revenue share, sales at one retailer, or the processors found in a survey of existing gaming PCs.
- Desktop versus overall x86: A change in consumer desktop share can be outweighed by results in other segments included in an overall x86 measure.
- Units versus revenue: Unit share counts processors; revenue share measures sales value. PCWorld’s reporting distinguishes the two, and a unit-share percentage should not be read as a revenue percentage.
- New sales versus installed base: Retail sales and shipment estimates concern processors sold or shipped during a period. A hardware survey reflects systems already in use among the surveyed population.
- Different time windows: A single month at a German retailer, a calendar quarter of estimated shipments and a month-to-month survey result need not point in the same direction.
These distinctions explain why apparently conflicting numbers can all be accurate within their stated scope. They also limit the conclusion: Alder Lake was putting pressure on AMD in consumer desktops, but the available figures do not establish that Intel had taken share across every processor market.

What the early sales and gaming-PC snapshots add
Mindfactory: a German retailer’s November 2021 sales
A TechSpot report on Mindfactory’s November 2021 snapshot said AMD accounted for about 70% of that retailer’s CPU sales and Intel about 30%. Alder Lake made up 37% of Intel’s sales in the snapshot; the Core i7-12700K was among the named Intel models. Intel had launched Alder Lake desktop processors on November 4, 2021, according to contemporaneous TechSpot reporting.
This is useful evidence that the new processors were selling within Intel’s lineup soon after launch. It is not a worldwide market-share estimate: it covers one retailer in Germany and one month, and the reported proportions describe that retailer’s sales rather than all desktop shipments.

Steam: processors among surveyed gaming users
TechRadar reported that AMD represented 31.53% and Intel 68.45% of users in the November 2021 Steam Hardware Survey. AMD’s share increased month over month. The survey describes processor participation among surveyed Steam users, not new CPU sales, shipments or all computer owners.
So the Steam result does not contradict Mindfactory’s evidence of Alder Lake sales, nor does Mindfactory’s snapshot disprove the Steam increase. One tracks an installed gaming-PC population; the other tracks a single retailer’s recent transactions.

What changed in Q1 2022
Mercury Research’s Q1 2022 reporting put AMD’s overall x86 unit share at 27.7%. The reported explanation emphasized the downturn in PC shipments: AMD’s shipments declined less quickly than Intel’s, while excess inventory was cited as one factor in the market conditions. Intel nevertheless recorded a year-over-year gain in desktop share in Alder Lake’s first full quarter.
That combination is important. A company can gain desktop share year over year while another gains overall x86 share in a quarter when the market is contracting. Share is relative: it reflects each company’s shipments against the relevant total, not simply whether its own unit shipments rose.

Tom’s Hardware quoted Mercury Research analyst Dean McCarron describing record combined client CPU average selling prices in Q1 2022, alongside the broader downturn. The figure he cited was $138 for combined desktop and notebook client CPUs, up more than 10% quarter over quarter and more than 30% year over year. That is a reported market-wide average selling price, not a price for Alder Lake or a measure of either company’s share.
How much scale Alder Lake had reached by mid-2022
In its Q2 2022 earnings remarks, Intel said Alder Lake had shipped well in excess of 35 million units and powered more than 525 designs. Those are Intel’s own product-family shipment and design claims. They indicate the family’s scale, but they are not an independent estimate of Intel’s market share or proof that those shipments all displaced AMD processors.
What the evidence supports—and what it doesn’t
- Supported: Alder Lake began affecting consumer desktop competition in late 2021, and AMD’s reported Q4 2021 desktop unit share fell.
- Also supported: AMD’s overall x86 unit share rose in Q4 2021 and reached 27.7% in Q1 2022, according to Mercury Research reporting.
- Not established by these figures: A single global market-share result covering all CPUs, all sales channels and all segments; a causal share transfer for every Intel shipment; or a present-day comparison between Intel and AMD.
The fairest reading of “chipping away” is therefore narrow and historical: Alder Lake helped Intel make desktop gains as the new generation arrived, but the market evidence varied by segment and measurement. These 2021–22 figures should not be used as current market-share estimates or as a standalone guide to which processor is a better purchase today.
