Reuters reported on September 16, 2024, that AMD won Sony’s reported PlayStation 6 system-chip design business after Intel lost a 2022 bidding process. The account is based on three people familiar with the events, not an official Sony announcement. It describes a dispute over Intel’s expected profit per chip, compatibility concerns, and a possible TSMC manufacturing arrangement. Sony has not publicly disclosed the PS6’s specifications, launch date, final chip supplier, or commercial terms.
What Intel reportedly lost
The reported deal concerned the design of Sony’s next-generation console chip. That is different from saying Intel lost a contract to manufacture the finished PlayStation 6 processor. Reuters described TSMC as part of the prospective manufacturing structure, while AMD reportedly won the design work.
The bidding reportedly took place in 2022. Broadcom was initially involved, but the process narrowed to Intel and AMD before AMD won, according to the Reuters account reproduced by Gadgets 360.
Because Sony has not publicly unveiled the PS6 or confirmed the agreement, the most accurate wording is that AMD reportedly won the PS6 chip-design contract, not that Sony has formally announced the final PS6 hardware.

Why AMD reportedly won
Intel and Sony disagreed over economics
Two sources told Reuters that negotiations stalled over how much profit Intel would receive per chip. Console processors are produced in large volumes over a long product cycle, but their margins can be lower than those of premium data-center or artificial-intelligence products. Accepting Sony’s terms could have created substantial volume for Intel while reducing its per-unit return.
This is an attributed explanation from unnamed sources, not a public statement by Sony or Intel. Intel said it strongly disagreed with Reuters’ characterization but declined to discuss current or potential customer conversations. AMD declined to comment, while Sony and Broadcom did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Compatibility was a platform-level concern
Sources said Sony and Intel discussed whether moving away from AMD could complicate backward compatibility with older PlayStation games. That does not mean Intel hardware was inherently incompatible. Intel and AMD both use the x86 instruction-set family, but console compatibility also depends on the GPU, memory system, operating-system behavior, graphics APIs, firmware, drivers, emulation and game-specific workarounds.

A supplier change could therefore require additional engineering even when the central CPU instruction set remains familiar. Staying with AMD may have reduced that transition risk, although the sources did not establish that compatibility alone decided the bid.

AMD has supplied custom silicon for recent PlayStation systems and Xbox Series consoles. That experience likely made it a lower-risk choice for a platform that must coordinate CPU, GPU, memory and software for many years. It is useful context, but it is not a separately confirmed statement that Sony selected AMD for this reason.
Why the program mattered to Intel
Reuters reported that the proposed program could have occupied Intel foundry capacity for more than five years. Two sources said an internal Intel projection estimated approximately $30 billion in potential revenue over the life of the program.

- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
That figure needs careful interpretation:
- It was an internal projection, not a publicly disclosed signed-contract value.
- It was potential program revenue, not confirmed booked revenue.
- It was not Intel’s expected profit and should not be described as $30 billion in losses.
- The report did not specify whether the estimate represented gross chip revenue, total program revenue or another internal accounting measure.
The opportunity also had strategic value. A major Sony program could have provided predictable volume, customer credibility and a high-profile reference for Intel’s effort to build an external foundry business. Intel began that foundry push under Pat Gelsinger in 2021.
On the same day Reuters published its report, Intel announced a separate multiyear, multibillion-dollar custom-chip and wafer collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Intel’s announcement does not mention Sony or PlayStation, so the AWS agreement should not be treated as a replacement for the reported Sony business. The announcement is available from the Intel Newsroom.

In December 2024, Sony’s PlayStation Blog called AMD a “fantastic partner” and described a deeper collaboration involving machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. That supports the existence of an ongoing Sony-AMD relationship, but it does not name a PS6 chip, manufacturing node, launch date or contract value.

What the report does not tell us about PS6
The available reporting does not establish:
- The console’s official name, release date or price.
- The AMD CPU and GPU architectures, core counts, clock speeds or graphics-unit count.
- The manufacturing foundry or process node.
- Whether TSMC is the final manufacturer or was only part of the reported bidding structure.
- The contract’s duration, unit volumes, pricing, margins or payment terms.
- The exact scope and technology of backward compatibility.
- Whether the reported arrangement will remain unchanged through mass production.
Console programs can change before a product reaches manufacturing. A reported design win therefore does not guarantee that every detail described in 2024 will appear in shipping hardware.

Continuing with AMD could make platform continuity and software support easier, particularly for backward compatibility. It does not reveal the PS6’s performance, graphics features, upscaling system, compatible game list, price or release timing. Those questions require official specifications or additional on-the-record disclosures.
What it means for Intel’s foundry strategy
Losing a high-volume console program would matter beyond gaming because Intel was seeking recognizable outside customers for its foundry operation. The reported Sony opportunity could have combined design revenue with factory utilization and process-learning value.

There is also a trade-off: console contracts can deliver steady, multiyear demand but generally offer less margin than top-end accelerator products. The reported dispute suggests Intel did not accept Sony’s economics, even though the volume and strategic visibility may have been attractive.
Bottom line on the report
Reuters’ account is substantial enough to report: it cites three people familiar with the events and identifies AMD as the reported winner of Sony’s 2022 PS6 chip-design process. Sony’s later public statements confirm a strong, continuing AMD relationship. They do not independently confirm the complete PS6 contract.
For now, the defensible conclusion is limited but clear: AMD appears to be Sony’s reported PS6 chip-design partner, while the console’s final technology, manufacturing arrangement, commercial terms and launch timing remain unconfirmed.
