David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus became interim co-CEOs. Intel later appointed Lip-Bu Tan CEO, effective March 18, 2025.
When did Pat Gelsinger leave Intel?
Gelsinger’s departure was effective Dec. 1, 2024. Intel announced it the following day, describing it as a retirement after what the company called a “40-plus-year career.” He also stepped down from Intel’s board. Intel’s announcement did not give a specific reason for his retirement, so claims that he was fired or left for a particular reason are not established by that release.
Who led Intel immediately after Gelsinger?
Intel named CFO David Zinsner and Michelle (MJ) Johnston Holthaus interim co-CEOs while the board searched for a permanent CEO. Frank Yeary, then Intel’s independent board chair, became interim executive chair.
Holthaus also became CEO of Intel Products. Intel said the leadership structure at Intel Foundry remained unchanged.

Who replaced Gelsinger as Intel CEO?
Intel appointed Lip-Bu Tan CEO effective March 18, 2025, succeeding the interim co-CEOs. Zinsner remained CFO, and Holthaus remained CEO of Intel Products. Intel’s appointment announcement was published March 12, 2025.
Intel identified Tan as CEO in a June 18, 2026, announcement about an Intel Foundry leadership appointment. That is a dated company statement, not a guarantee that the role has not changed since. Read the June 2026 announcement.
