Intel and NVIDIA announced plans on September 18, 2025, to develop multiple generations of data-center and PC products, alongside NVIDIA’s agreement to buy $5 billion of Intel common stock. The stock purchase is a separate transaction from the product collaboration: the announcement does not say the investment is payment for Intel’s CPU design work.
What the companies plan to build
The companies said they would connect Intel and NVIDIA architectures using NVIDIA NVLink. Intel is to design and manufacture custom CPUs for both data-center and client products. The two planned product tracks are different in purpose and form:
| Track | Planned product | Disclosed maturity |
|---|---|---|
| AI data center | Custom Intel x86 CPUs for NVIDIA AI infrastructure platforms, connected using NVLink. | Product development plan; no retail product details stated in the September 18, 2025 announcement. |
| Personal computers | x86 system-on-chips integrating NVIDIA RTX GPU chiplets with Intel CPU technology, with the architectures linked using NVLink. | Product development plan; no retail product details stated in the September 18, 2025 announcement. |
NVLink is the announced connection between the companies’ architectures. The announcement describes that role at a high level; it does not provide implementation details or specifications for either planned product track.
What NVIDIA agreed to buy
In a securities purchase agreement dated September 15, 2025, NVIDIA agreed to purchase 214,776,632 shares of Intel common stock at $23.28 per share, for an aggregate cash purchase price of $5.0 billion. Intel reported these terms in a Form 8-K filed September 18, 2025. The companies made the collaboration and investment public on September 18.
#1 Best Overall
The filing establishes an agreed stock purchase. It does not establish that NVIDIA takes control of Intel, that the $5 billion is a CPU-design fee, or that Intel will manufacture NVIDIA products in its foundry.
Are the planned products available to buy?
The cited announcement identifies no retail SKU, specification sheet, consumer price, or launch date for the jointly developed products. It therefore supports describing them as planned development, not as products available to purchase. The announcement and filing also do not establish later product-launch developments or whether the stock transaction subsequently closed.
