A 2023 Retool survey found that 51.6% of respondents considered AI overrated. That is a finding about the views of people who answered that survey—not proof that AI is objectively overhyped, and not a measure of what tech workers think in 2026.

What did the Retool survey find?

Futurism reported the results of Retool’s 2023 survey in a November 23, 2023, article. Of the reported responses about AI’s level of hype, 51.6% called it overrated, 25.1% called it underrated, and 23.4% said it was fairly rated. Futurism’s report describes the survey as covering 1,500 people working in tech, including executives, software engineers, designers, and people in other roles across industries.

View of AI Share of respondents
Overrated 51.6%
Underrated 25.1%
Fairly rated 23.4%

These percentages describe responses to the survey’s sentiment question; they do not measure AI’s capabilities, effectiveness, or economic value.

Did respondents who called AI overrated avoid using it?

No such conclusion follows from the reported results. The same coverage describes software engineers using AI tools while changing how often they relied on Stack Overflow: 57.6% of surveyed software engineers said they used Stack Overflow less, and 10.2% said they had stopped using it altogether, as they increasingly turned to ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot. Those figures concern reported behavior among engineers, not the separate question about whether AI was overrated.

That distinction matters: someone can use a tool and still believe expectations around it are excessive. The Stack Overflow responses suggest a shift in reported work habits, but they do not establish why usage changed or show that AI tools improved productivity.

Did opinions differ by job role?

Futurism’s account says executives viewed AI more favorably, while people in technical roles were more likely to call it overrated. The accessible coverage does not give exact percentages for those groups, so it cannot support a numerical comparison between executives, engineers, designers, or other roles.

How much can the survey tell us?

Retool’s State of AI report page describes a broader pool of 1,500+ developers, builders, and business leaders and promotes findings on AI adoption, tools, use cases, challenges, and technology stacks. The full report is offered through form access. Futurism reports a sample of 1,500 people working in tech and broad role categories, but the accessible article and Retool page do not establish recruitment method, exact field dates, weighting, response rates, or margin of error.

As a result, the percentages should be read as reported survey responses, not as a precise estimate for every tech worker or as evidence from a probability sample. Retool’s 2024 follow-up characterizes its 2023 respondents as seeing AI as slightly overrated, which is consistent with the broad result, but it does not replace the original survey instrument or supply the missing methodological detail. Retool’s 2024 follow-up provides that later context.

Is AI overrated, according to tech workers?

The narrow answer is that a majority of respondents in Retool’s 2023 survey said AI was overrated. The result captures sentiment at that time among people surveyed; it cannot establish an industry-wide consensus, settle whether AI is overhyped, or describe current opinion in 2026.
