Instagram Live vs. Facebook Live for Selling Products: Features, Reach, and Costs

Facebook Live has the clearer documented in-stream product-list workflow; Instagram’s documented shopping tools focus on feed posts and Reels. Reach and costs depend on your account, audience, and promotion plan.

Facebook Live is the clearer choice if you need viewers to browse a product list while watching. Meta’s May 2025 seller-training materials describe synced catalogs and product lists for Facebook Live shopping; its June 2026 announcement says viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast when live-shopping tools are combined with live video ads. Instagram offers product discovery through feed posts and Reels, but the current sources do not establish an equivalent product-list experience inside Instagram Live. Neither platform has a proven universal reach advantage or a comparable published cost figure here. Your audience, seller eligibility, checkout path, and any ad spend should decide the choice.

How the selling experience differs

The key distinction is not simply which app has more users. It is whether a viewer can move from seeing a product to finding its details and completing a purchase without losing the live stream. That can affect what a seller needs to prepare, how clearly a host can direct viewers, and how much friction remains between interest and checkout.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The evidence for the two platforms is not symmetrical. Meta’s materials describe a specific Facebook Live shopping workflow with a synced catalog and event product lists. For Instagram, the sources establish product tagging and affiliate links in certain formats, as well as a seller-site checkout path, but do not establish the same kind of product list inside Instagram Live. That distinction is about what the reviewed sources document; it should not be stretched into a claim that every Instagram account has the same interface or that features cannot change.

Product browsing during the broadcast Meta Blueprint describes a synced catalog and product lists that let viewers browse and purchase during a Facebook Live shopping event. Meta’s June 2026 announcement says Facebook live-shopping tools can be combined with live video ads so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. The current sources establish catalog tagging and affiliate links for Instagram feed posts and Reels, but do not establish an equivalent product list for Instagram Live.
Documented checkout path Meta’s training describes purchases during the stream, but the reviewed materials do not specify a universal checkout arrangement for every merchant or region. Shopify says customers who shop tagged products complete purchases through the seller’s online store.
Paid live-video promotion Meta Blueprint describes scheduling live video ads through Ads Manager or boosting in Live Producer. Meta said in June 2026 that live video ads were expanding globally on Facebook. Meta said in June 2026 that live video ads were being introduced on Instagram. The announcement does not establish an identical product-browsing workflow to Facebook Live shopping.
Reach evidence Meta says live video ads can reach people beyond a seller’s current audience; it does not promise a particular audience size. No comparable organic or paid Instagram Live audience figure is established in the sources reviewed.
Comparable current cost figure Not stated in the sources reviewed; Meta confirms paid promotion is an option. Not stated in the sources reviewed.

Use the table as a feature comparison, not as a promise about availability. Regional rules, account approval, product eligibility, and changes to Meta’s tools can affect what a seller can actually use. Check the current settings and commerce requirements attached to your account before building an event around a feature.

What Facebook Live shopping lets viewers do

Meta Blueprint’s May 22, 2025 training describes a Facebook Live shopping workflow built around a product catalog synced to the seller’s account. The seller creates product lists for the event; viewers can browse and purchase products during the stream. The material also describes Messenger automations as part of the seller setup. These are specific capabilities in Meta’s training, not a guarantee that every account, product category, or country has the same features.

For a seller, the product list matters because it gives a viewer a browsing route during the broadcast rather than leaving the viewer to remember a product name or search for it later. The list can be planned around the demonstration: for example, put the items you intend to show in a sensible order and confirm that the products viewers see correspond to what the host is discussing. This is a practical way to use the documented product-list capability; the source does not prescribe a particular list length, sequence, or event script.

Meta’s June 18, 2026 announcement adds a promotion angle: Facebook live-shopping tools can be paired with live video ads, allowing viewers to browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. Meta said live video ads were expanding globally on Facebook. “Globally” describes the ad rollout in Meta’s announcement; it does not mean every merchant or account automatically qualifies for every commerce feature. Nor does an ad rollout by itself establish a particular audience size, sales result, or price for promoting an event.

Typical preparation for a shoppable Facebook broadcast

  1. Confirm account and market eligibility. Check the commerce and advertising features currently available to your business, the products you sell, and your country. The reviewed sources do not provide a complete country-by-country eligibility list.
  2. Prepare a synced product catalog. Make sure the catalog contains the products and details you plan to show. Meta Blueprint identifies the synced catalog as part of its live-shopping setup. A catalog by itself should not be treated as proof that live shopping is enabled on your account.
  3. Build the product list for the event. Select the products viewers should be able to browse while the broadcast is running; keep the list aligned with the order of your demonstration. Check that each planned item is represented in the catalog and that the viewer-facing information is useful for making a choice.
  4. Decide whether to promote the live video. Meta Blueprint describes scheduling ads in Meta Ads Manager or boosting in Live Producer. Promotion is optional and involves ad spending; Meta’s training does not state a current rate. Decide whether you want to rely on your existing audience or allocate a paid budget to extend the event’s exposure.
  5. Run a purchase-path check. Verify that a viewer can find the item you demonstrate and proceed through the checkout path available to your account before announcing the event. The sources do not specify a universal checkout setup, so test the real route for your business.
  6. Plan the host’s directions. Be ready to tell viewers how to find the item being discussed and what to do if they have a question. The sources identify product lists and Messenger automations as parts of the workflow, but do not define a required script or promise that automation handles every customer interaction.

The process has a practical advantage when product discovery is central to the broadcast: viewers need not rely only on remembering a product name or searching for a link after the stream. It also lets a seller organize several items within an event rather than treating each product mention as a separate, unconnected recommendation. However, the sources do not establish one checkout configuration for every seller. Verify what your account actually presents to shoppers and avoid advertising a frictionless purchase path until you have tested it.

What Instagram supports—and what is not established for Live

Instagram’s documented shopping context centers on discovery in feed posts and Reels rather than a confirmed in-stream catalog for Instagram Live. Meta’s June 2026 announcement describes affiliate links and catalog product tagging in Reels and feed posts in 22 countries or regions, including Japan. That country-and-format scope should not be generalized into a claim that the same features are available in every market or inside live broadcasts.

Shopify’s Instagram Shopping documentation says approved sellers in supported regions can tag catalog products in Instagram posts and stories. A customer who follows a product tag completes the purchase through the seller’s online store. For an Instagram Live seller, that means planning how viewers will reach the product and checkout—such as communicating the relevant shop or product route—rather than assuming viewers can open an equivalent live product list. The documentation supports a seller-site checkout path for tagged products; it does not establish that a product tag in a post or story is also an in-stream live shopping control.

  • Wireless Remote & Complete Kit: Includes 1 phone tripod/selfie stick, 1 universal phone holder, 1 adapter, and 1 wireless remote shutter. Backed by 12-month after-sales support for everyday shooting needs.

That difference is especially important for a demonstration with several products. A seller using Instagram Live can still use the broadcast to explain, compare, and show products, but should decide in advance how viewers will move from what they see on screen to the relevant listing and online-store checkout. Keep any spoken directions unambiguous, and check that the route works on the audience-facing account. The available information does not prescribe a specific link placement or guarantee that every seller has the same route, so verify the options available in your account rather than assuming a particular live feature.

Instagram Shopping requirements to check

  • Your business must be in a region supported for the relevant Instagram Shopping feature.
  • Your products must meet Meta’s product requirements.
  • Your account must be approved for the feature.
  • You need a Meta product catalog for product tagging.
  • For the Shopify-documented path, the customer completes the purchase on the seller’s online store.

Approval and availability matter: having a catalog or a Shopify store alone does not establish that product tagging is enabled on a specific Instagram account. A seller should check both eligibility and the actual purchase flow before promoting an event. Also distinguish a supported format from a supported feature: availability of shopping tags in feed posts or stories is not, on its own, evidence of an in-Live product list or native checkout.

Reach: potential is not a result

Meta’s Blueprint training says Facebook live video ads can reach high-intent shoppers beyond a seller’s current audience. This is a statement about what paid promotion can do, not a forecast or guaranteed number of viewers, buyers, or sales. The materials reviewed provide no fair, comparable figure for organic Instagram Live versus organic Facebook Live reach, and no platform-specific live conversion rates.

Meta reported more than 3.5 billion people worldwide using its apps daily in its June 18, 2026 announcement. That is an app-wide figure, not the audience for Instagram Live, Facebook Live, or any seller’s broadcast. It cannot tell you how many of your potential customers will see a particular event. It would be misleading to present the broad Meta figure as a live audience estimate or as evidence that one of the two platforms will deliver more customers.

Reach also has several meanings that are easy to conflate. A large potential user base is not the same as the number of people who are eligible to see an event, the number who actually encounter a promotion, the number who join a live broadcast, or the number who buy. Meta’s statement about reaching beyond a current audience concerns the capability of paid live-video promotion; it does not compare Facebook’s organic distribution with Instagram’s, and it does not guarantee that an ad will find likely purchasers.

Use your own audience data

  • Compare follower overlap between your Instagram and Facebook audiences. A larger follower count on one app may not mean a larger reachable buyer audience.
  • Review past live attendance, watch time, product inquiries, and sales on each platform, if you have comparable records.
  • Separate organic results from paid results. Record ad spend and the audience reached for promoted streams instead of treating those viewers as organic reach.
  • Measure the path from attendance to product views and completed purchases. A stream with fewer viewers may still perform better if its product-to-checkout path is clearer.
  • Compare similar events where possible. If the offer, product, timing, and promotion differ substantially, the results may not tell you which platform caused the difference.

If you have no prior live data, treat the first event as a small, measurable test rather than assuming either platform will win. Keep the product, offer, event length, and promotion approach as consistent as practical when comparing results. Record the platform, whether the stream was promoted, who the intended audience was, attendance, product interest, and completed purchases. The sources provide no benchmark conversion rate to use as a substitute for your own results, so build a baseline that reflects your business.

Costs: what can and cannot be compared

The reviewed sources do not provide current comparable ad rates, transaction fees, or a complete seller cost schedule for Instagram Live versus Facebook Live. Meta Blueprint confirms that sellers can pay to promote Facebook live videos, but it does not state a current price. Meta’s 2020 Facebook Shops announcement historically described creating a Shop as free; that statement does not establish the full cost of selling today or the cost of every commerce, checkout, or advertising service.

There is therefore no defensible single figure in the available source materials for “the cost of selling on Instagram Live” or “the cost of selling on Facebook Live.” The total can depend on choices outside the broadcast itself, including whether you promote it and the seller’s own store and payment arrangements. Do not read the absence of a platform price in the reviewed materials as proof that all parts of the selling operation are free; it means the sources do not provide a complete comparable schedule.

For a useful budget, separate the possible expenses rather than treating a platform as simply “free” or “paid”:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Broadcasting: The cited materials do not provide a per-stream fee comparison. Do not infer a current cost from the older Shops announcement.
  • Promotion: Paid live-video advertising is optional. Set a budget in the relevant advertising tools and confirm the amount and terms shown to your account. Meta Blueprint describes Ads Manager scheduling or boosting in Live Producer for Facebook; the available information gives no current price or direct Instagram-versus-Facebook rate comparison.
  • Commerce and checkout: Confirm any costs associated with your store, payment processing, and checkout provider for your market. The reviewed sources do not give a comparable total. Shopify’s documentation establishes that tagged Instagram product purchases complete on the seller’s online store, but does not supply a total cost for that store and its payment setup.
  • Production: A phone tripod or ring light can help make a demonstration easier to see, but neither is a platform requirement. The cost depends on the equipment you choose; no particular model or price was researched.

Before launching, check current terms and charges for your specific account, region, store, and payment setup. Do not use the historical “free Shop” description as a substitute for that check. If you are comparing platforms, keep the categories separate in your estimate: a paid promotion budget is not a transaction fee, and equipment spending is not a platform charge.

Which platform should you choose?

Choose Facebook Live when in-stream browsing is the priority

Facebook is the stronger fit when your event depends on viewers browsing a product list and seeing prices while the broadcast continues, provided the relevant commerce tools are available to your account. Its documented workflow also gives you the option of promoting a live video to people beyond your existing audience. That makes Facebook the clearer documented option for a seller whose deciding requirement is an in-stream catalog experience—not a guaranteed winner for every kind of sale.

Before choosing it, confirm that the catalog, product list, and any promotion tools you intend to use are actually available to your business. The source materials describe the workflow but do not give a complete list of account, product, or market eligibility requirements. Check the purchase path as well: the training describes in-stream browsing and purchases, but does not establish one universal checkout arrangement.

Choose Instagram when your audience and discovery path are stronger there

Instagram may be the better practical choice if your likely buyers are more engaged there and your product discovery plan works through the Instagram features available to your account. Plan for the documented checkout route: tagged products in supported posts and stories can send customers to the seller’s online store. Do not count on catalog browsing inside Instagram Live unless your account’s current interface explicitly supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instagram can also be relevant when product discovery outside the live event is part of the sales plan: Meta’s June 2026 announcement covers affiliate links and catalog product tags for Reels and feed posts in 22 countries or regions, and Shopify documents tags in posts and stories for approved sellers in supported regions. Those are useful shopping contexts, but they should not be presented as proof of equivalent shopping controls during an Instagram Live broadcast.

Choose based on the whole purchase journey

Compare the audience you can actually reach, whether viewers can identify the product, how many steps checkout takes, what your account is eligible to use, and whether you will pay to promote the event. If in-stream catalog browsing is the deciding factor, Meta’s current materials support Facebook Live as the clearer documented option. If your audience is concentrated on Instagram, test the live format there with an explicit product-to-store route and measure completed purchases rather than relying on views alone.

A sensible decision sequence is to check eligibility first, then map the shopper journey, then estimate the optional promotion and seller-side costs, and finally compare results using your own audience data. This avoids choosing on a broad user statistic or an assumed universal price. If the important feature is not available to your account or market, the nominal platform advantage does not help your specific event.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can viewers shop directly from a Facebook Live broadcast?

Meta Blueprint’s May 2025 training describes a Facebook Live shopping setup with a synced catalog and product lists that let viewers browse and purchase during the stream. Meta’s June 2026 announcement says Facebook live-shopping tools can be combined with live video ads so viewers can browse products and see prices without leaving the broadcast. Availability and the exact checkout setup should be verified for your account and market.

Can viewers browse a product catalog during Instagram Live?

The sources reviewed do not establish an Instagram Live product-list experience equivalent to the Facebook Live shopping workflow. Meta describes affiliate links and catalog product tagging in Instagram Reels and feed posts, while Shopify documents product tagging in posts and stories for approved sellers in supported regions. Do not assume those features automatically operate inside a live broadcast.

Where does checkout happen for Instagram Shopping product tags?

Shopify’s documentation says a customer who shops a tagged product completes the purchase through the seller’s online store. The sources do not establish a universal checkout arrangement for every Instagram Live seller, so check the route available to your account and make it clear to viewers.

Does Facebook Live reach more people than Instagram Live?

The available information does not provide a fair, comparable organic reach figure or platform-specific live conversion rate for the two services. Meta says Facebook live video ads can reach beyond a seller’s current audience, but that is a paid-promotion capability, not a guaranteed audience size or proof that Facebook always outperforms Instagram. Compare your follower overlap, prior attendance, campaign results, and sales.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does it cost to sell on Instagram Live or Facebook Live?

The reviewed sources do not provide current comparable ad rates, transaction fees, or a complete seller cost schedule. Facebook live-video promotion is optional and priced through the advertising tools, but Meta Blueprint gives no current rate. Budget separately for optional ads, your store and payment setup, and any production equipment, then verify current account-level terms.

Is Facebook Shops free to use today?

Meta’s 2020 Shops announcement historically described creating a Facebook Shop as free, but that does not establish all present-day selling costs or the cost of advertising, checkout, payment processing, or other services. Check the current terms for your market, account, store, and payment setup.

What does a seller need to tag products on Instagram?

Shopify says sellers need to be in a supported region, meet Meta’s product requirements, receive approval, and have a Meta product catalog. A catalog or Shopify store alone does not guarantee that a particular account is approved or that tags are available. Verify the account status and checkout route before promoting a live event.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Facebook Live if in-stream product browsing is essential and the relevant tools are available to your account; Meta’s materials document that workflow more clearly. Choose Instagram when your audience and seller-site shopping path are stronger there, but do not assume Instagram Live has the same product list. Neither platform has a proven universal reach advantage or a complete comparable cost figure in the available source materials. Check eligibility, test the actual purchase journey, and use your own attendance and sales data to decide.
