Who designed the house?
Architect Stephen Samuelson and architect Harry Perez-Daple are credited for the project; Judith Lance designed the interiors. Before working with Lance, the Smiths consulted designer Waldo Fernandez, according to Architectural Digest’s 2011 feature.
The project took shape over years. The couple’s collaboration with Samuelson gathered momentum after they contacted him and acquired a ranch near Calabasas in 1997. The feature says the permit process took four years in a landscape with complex environmental regulations. Construction began in 2003; the land was regraded to its natural topography, and areas previously leveled for equestrian use were restored.
What does the mansion look like?
Adobe influences and handmade materials
The two-story house curves around a motor court. Samuelson described its historical references as Persian, Moroccan, Spanish, and Southwestern American interpretations of adobe. The result is not presented as a single-period replica; its character comes from combining those influences with materials and details selected for the house.

Pinkett Smith described the broader goal as a family retreat: “We wanted to create a family retreat, something made by hand and as natural as possible, something that ties back to the land.” In the same 2011 feature, she called the house a spiritual endeavor for the couple.
Collected antiques and custom furnishings
The interiors include carved panels, doors, and architectural fragments collected from the Middle East, Africa, the American Southwest, and Asia. Among the pieces described by Architectural Digest are a monumental front door formerly used at a fort in northern India; a living-room fireplace screen combining copper mesh, hand-hammered bronze, and carnelian; custom brass-wire sconces; and a bronze-and-leather chandelier with hand-strung rock-crystal beads.

In the master suite, a canopy of small ball chains hangs from bronze links. The house’s curves also shaped the furnishings: Lance said, “Nothing here came off the shelf,” describing how furniture had to be tailored to the architecture.

Architectural Digest’s 2021 article called the estate the couple’s primary residence then. That is a dated report, not confirmation of where they live or who owns the property now. The 2013 account said the couple were not selling at that time; it does not establish what happened later.
Keep this estate distinct from other properties and assets mentioned in the 2021 portfolio article, including a Hidden Hills house, a Kauai property, and the custom movie trailer The Heat. Those are not amenities or parts of the Calabasas-area compound.
