United’s “high-J” Boeing 767-300ER is a 167-seat, four-cabin layout built around an unusually large 46-seat Polaris business-class cabin. United announced the configuration in 2019; it is not a reliable description of every United 767 or a guide to today’s routes. For a specific trip, the operating aircraft’s seat map is the best starting point.
What “high-J” means on a United 767
In airline shorthand, “J” refers to business class. A high-J aircraft devotes an unusually large share of its cabin to business-class seats. United’s February 2019 announcement described a reconfigured Boeing 767-300ER with 46 Polaris business-class seats, 22 Premium Plus seats, 47 Economy Plus seats and 52 economy seats—a total of 167.
| Cabin | Seats in United’s 2019 high-J layout |
|---|---|
| United Polaris business class | 46 |
| United Premium Plus | 22 |
| Economy Plus | 47 |
| Economy | 52 |
| Total | 167 |
United said the 46 Polaris seats represented 16 additional business-class seats and a more than 50% increase in all-aisle-access seating compared with the prior arrangement. The 2019 announcement also described Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, Sunday Riley amenity-kit products, in-flight entertainment, elevated food and beverages, and lounge access for Polaris customers on the specified journey. These are details of the announcement at that time, not a guarantee that every amenity or access rule remains unchanged.
United’s release called Premium Plus new to the 767-300ER, saying the aircraft would “feature 22 United® Premium Plus seats (becoming the first 767-300ER to offer this seat type); 47 Economy Plus seats and 52 Economy seats.” United Airlines’ February 6, 2019 announcement gives the full configuration.

How high-J differs from other United 767 cabins
United 767-300ERs have been reported in more than one configuration. Secondary reporting distinguishes the high-J layout, with 46 Polaris and 22 Premium Plus seats, from a less premium-heavy standard layout. The reported standard layouts vary across articles and dates, and no current tail-by-tail inventory is established here.
That means “United 767” alone does not tell you which cabin you will get. A seat map can help you assess the booked configuration, but aircraft assignments can change. For a trip-dependent decision, check the operating aircraft and seat map close to departure as well as when booking.

Why United introduced a high-J 767
United’s investor materials characterized the high-J 767 as suitable for routes with substantial business-class traffic. The airline also pointed to the 767’s range and capacity for European and South American service, including flexibility to operate routes during lower-demand seasons. Those points describe United’s stated fleet-planning rationale; they do not establish which routes currently use the aircraft or prove that a particular route is best served by it. United’s investor materials discuss the aircraft’s intended role.
A historical example was Newark/New York–London Heathrow. In July 2019, United said every flight between the city pair would use the newly reconfigured 767-300ER. That illustrates the premium-capacity strategy at the time, not a current schedule commitment. United’s 2019 announcement is the dated source for that deployment statement.

What United’s premium-seat figure says—and what it doesn’t
United’s 2025 annual filing reported 27.4 million premium seats flown across its full fleet, equal to 12% of all seats flown in 2025. That is a fleet-wide figure, not a count or share for the 767, and it does not show how the high-J aircraft performed on any route. United’s annual reports and proxy materials are the source for the filing.

- Open your reservation or the flight’s booking page. Find the seat map for the specific flight rather than relying on a general 767 description.
- Look for the cabin mix. The 2019 high-J layout has 46 Polaris seats and 22 Premium Plus seats, alongside Economy Plus and economy.
- Recheck before departure. If United changes the operating aircraft or seat map, the cabin may differ from what you first saw.
The available configuration information does not identify current high-J tail numbers or establish present-day route assignments. A dated announcement can explain the aircraft’s design, but only the current booking details can help you evaluate a particular itinerary.
