The first location opened at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, California, on May 25, 2022.
It looked like a modern clothing boutique, but worked more like a showroom connected to a small fulfillment center. Customers scanned QR codes, selected sizes in the Amazon Shopping app and had employees bring garments to fitting rooms. Both Amazon Style locations closed on November 9, 2023, so this is a historical account—not a current store guide.
What Amazon Style was trying to change
Buying clothes online is convenient, but shoppers cannot feel the fabric, compare fits or try on an item before ordering. Conventional stores solve those problems, but they must devote substantial floor space to racks, duplicate sizes and multiple colors.
Amazon Style attempted to combine both models. Its sales floor emphasized discovery and complete “looks,” while the app and back room supplied the depth of inventory. In effect, Amazon separated the visible store from the merchandise operation behind it:

- The back room: inventory storage, retrieval and preparation.
- The employees: the people who physically moved products from storage to fitting rooms or pickup counters.
That distinction matters. Amazon Style was not Amazon’s first brick-and-mortar experiment; Amazon had already operated formats including bookstores, Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh. It was the company’s first dedicated physical clothing store.
The first location: Glendale, California
Amazon announced the concept in January 2022 and opened the first store to the public on May 25, 2022. The location was The Americana at Brand, an upscale open-air shopping center in Glendale near retailers such as H&M and Apple. Coverage put the store at approximately 30,000 square feet, with customer-facing merchandise and fitting rooms spread across two levels.
The setting was intentional. Amazon placed its apparel experiment in a conventional retail environment, where shoppers could encounter it alongside established fashion brands rather than treating it as a warehouse or pickup point.
What shoppers saw on the floor
The store displayed women’s and men’s clothing, shoes, accessories, beauty and skincare products, jewelry, fitness items, home goods and smaller accessories. The assortment included Amazon-owned apparel lines and brands such as Theory, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Levi’s, Vince and Steve Madden, according to contemporary coverage from GeekWire and The Guardian.
Sections were organized by category, brand, style and theme. Shoppers might see jeans grouped by cut or displays built around seasonal and trend-oriented edits. The presentation was closer to a curated catalog of outfits than a traditional department-store wall packed with every variation.

A displayed garment was usually a representative item, not a promise that every size and color was physically hanging nearby. Amazon said this approach allowed it to offer more than twice the number of styles that a traditional store of comparable size could display. That was Amazon’s stated claim, not an independently measured result.
How the shopping process worked
The central workflow put the Amazon Shopping app at the center of the store visit:
- Open the Amazon Shopping app.
- Scan the QR code attached to a displayed item.
- Review the listing, including product information, ratings, available colors and sizes.
- Select a size and color.
- Send the item to a fitting room or, if trying it on was unnecessary, to a pickup counter.
- Continue browsing while employees retrieved the requested merchandise.
- Wait for an app notification that the fitting room was ready.
- Access the room through the app and inspect the items.
- Request additional pieces—including different sizes, colors or recommended styles—from the room’s touchscreen.
- Keep the items wanted and return the rest before ending the fitting-room session.
- Pay in the app or use a conventional payment method.
The store therefore was not fully cashierless. Amazon promoted app payment, but traditional payment methods and staffed assistance remained part of the experience.
The “magic closet” was a touchscreen—and a logistics system
Amazon described the fitting-room concept as a “magic closet.” The room’s touchscreen showed the items already selected and let shoppers request more without leaving to search the racks. It also presented related recommendations and allowed shoppers to rate items or complete the session.
The signature feature was not simply the screen. It was the combination of screen, software and physical retrieval. A shopper could ask for another size with a tap, but an employee still had to locate the garment, move it through the store and place it in the room.

One reported walkthrough described merchandise traveling through industrial-sized elevators to fitting rooms on another level. That detail reveals the store’s real operating model: the polished customer interface depended on a substantial backstage operation involving inventory racks, elevators, room preparation, sorting and employee labor.
How automated was Amazon Style?
The store used QR-code scanning, Amazon account integration, machine-learning recommendations, touchscreen fitting rooms and digital access. Those features could make the experience appear nearly autonomous.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

It was not. Employees retrieved garments, transported them, stocked fitting rooms, helped shoppers and supported checkout and returns. The “magic closet” was best understood as software layered over retail logistics—not a fully automated store.
This also explains the economic trade-off. Amazon moved clutter and much of the handling work out of the customer’s sight, but it did not eliminate that work. The visible floor became cleaner and more spacious because the labor and inventory were relocated behind the scenes.
What the format promised shoppers
Amazon’s stated goals were to provide a wider assortment in a smaller visible footprint, make size and color selection easier and connect online and in-person shopping. The concept also supported ordering products online to a Style location, trying them on there and returning them at the store under the historical operating model.

Amazon said in-store prices would match Amazon.com prices at launch. That was a historical promise tied to the store’s opening, not a current Amazon Style policy.
For a customer who already knew what they wanted, the pickup-counter option could be efficient. For someone who wanted to try multiple sizes, the fitting-room request system avoided carrying armloads of clothes. A dead phone battery was a bigger obstacle because scanning and much of the workflow depended on the app, although contemporary coverage said associates could help with charging.
What the experience gained—and gave up
| Potential advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|
| More sizes and colors available through the catalog | Shoppers could not directly handle every physical variant, and digital availability did not guarantee stock. |
| Less crowded sales floor | Browsing became more dependent on scanning and requesting rather than freely pulling items from racks. |
| Convenient size exchanges in the fitting room | Each request depended on retrieval time and employee availability. |
| Recommendations based on shopping data | Personalization also placed the trip inside Amazon’s data environment and could encourage add-on purchases. |
| Online and store functions in one account | A shopper without a smartphone, app access or a charged device faced more friction. |
| Customer-facing technology looked seamless | The system remained labor-intensive behind the scenes. |
Reported reactions reflected that tension. Positive firsthand accounts highlighted orderly displays, convenient size requests, the ability to save items for later and a mix of brands and price points. Outside coverage, including The Guardian, questioned whether the technology made shopping feel less spontaneous and tactile. Those are reported observations, not proof of universal customer sentiment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was Amazon Style really a personal stylist?
Amazon marketed a personalized shopping environment, but the documented system was recommendation software combined with employee fulfillment. It was not a human personal-stylist service.
Nor is the evidence sufficient to describe the recommendations as advanced artificial intelligence with a particular level of accuracy. “Algorithmic recommendations” or “machine-learning recommendations” is more precise. The store used data and software to suggest products, but the available reporting does not document the model’s training data, technical design or measurable performance.

What happened to the stores?
Amazon opened a second Style location at Easton Town Center in Columbus, Ohio, in October 2022. On November 2–3, 2023, the company announced that both physical apparel stores would close. Glendale and Columbus shut on November 9, 2023.
Amazon said it would focus on its online fashion business while continuing to invest in grocery-related physical retail. The available closure reporting does not provide detailed sales figures or establish one definitive cause such as poor sales, customer rejection or technical failure.
The Glendale store operated for roughly 171⁄2 months—not merely “about a year.” The Columbus location had a shorter run. Any older page describing either store as open, or presenting its fitting-room and return policies as current, is out of date.
What Amazon Style’s experiment demonstrated
Amazon Style did not simply put Amazon products in a mall. It tested whether a physical store could function as an interface to an online catalog.
The idea addressed a real weakness in e-commerce: apparel often needs to be seen, touched and tried on. Amazon added those physical advantages while retaining digital selection, account data, recommendations and fulfillment infrastructure. But the model also raised a harder question: was Amazon bringing online shopping into the store, or using the store to bring shoppers back into the Amazon ecosystem?
The experiment showed that the visible retail environment could be relatively uncluttered while the real operation remained complex behind it. It also showed the limits of treating physical shopping as a sequence of scans, notifications and requests. The format offered convenience for some tasks, but potentially reduced the spontaneity and tactile discovery that make clothing stores useful in the first place.
Its closure does not prove that the technology failed. It does show that Amazon did not establish a durable reason to keep this particular physical apparel format running. As of 2026, Amazon Style is best understood as a closed case study in retail design, fulfillment and the economics of moving online shopping into a store.
