BOXABL’s Casita is a 361-square-foot factory-built studio, but $50,000 is not its current listed price. BOXABL’s product page lists the Casita Studio at $60,000 for the unit alone and turnkey projects starting at $150,000. The available evidence does not establish that Elon Musk lived in a BOXABL Casita.
What is inside a BOXABL Casita?
The Casita Studio is a compact, factory-built home arranged as one open studio room with a kitchen and a bathroom. BOXABL lists it at 19 by 19 feet, or 361 square feet, with zero bedrooms and one bathroom. The company’s SEC filing says the unit is pre-wired and pre-plumbed, with the kitchen, bathroom and appliances installed at the factory. BOXABL’s Casita Studio page and its FY2025 Form 10-K describe the product.
For transport, the filing says the Casita folds down to 8 feet 6 inches wide. That shipping configuration is not the home’s finished living layout; the full unit opens to its 19-by-19-foot dimensions after delivery and installation.
Larger configurations
BOXABL’s filing also describes one- and two-bedroom arrangements made by connecting two Casita units, for a combined 722 square feet. It reports California statewide approval for the two-bedroom model in November 2025. The filing also says Casitas were approved as modular homes under the Residential Building Code by the Manufactured Housing Division in 2025. Those approvals do not mean every local authority will approve every project: permitted use, site requirements and applicable codes depend on the jurisdiction and property.

How much does the BOXABL Casita cost now?
As listed on BOXABL’s product page accessed October 8, 2026, the unit-only Casita Studio is $60,000, while turnkey service starts at $150,000. These are company-listed prices, not independently audited quotes for a particular site; BOXABL says pricing and scope are subject to site conditions. Check the current product listing and request a location-specific quote before budgeting.
| Purchase option | Listed price | What BOXABL says is included | What the buyer must account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit only | $60,000 | Casita Studio; basic documentation package; one-year manufacturer warranty and six-year extended warranty; professional packaging and weatherproofing. | The buyer handles permits, site work, shipping and installation. BOXABL lists shipping at $8–$15 per mile, with the amount varying. |
| Turnkey | Starting at $150,000 | Home unit; site survey and custom planning; engineering; water, electric and sewer utility connections; foundation and professional installation; shipping and crane services; final inspection and certification. | The final scope and price depend on site conditions. Confirm what the quote covers for the specific property. |
Both options require more than comparing the sticker prices. Land, local approvals, site preparation, utility access and the specific requirements for delivery and installation can affect the project. With unit-only, those responsibilities sit with the buyer; turnkey bundles a broader set of services, but the published starting price is not a guaranteed price for every location.

Why the $50,000 price is historical
A BOXABL offering memorandum filed with the SEC in 2021 described $50,000 as an expected selling price for the Casita. It was a projection, not the current price of an installed, ready-to-live-in home. BOXABL’s current listing instead shows $60,000 for the unit-only studio and turnkey projects starting at $150,000.
The distinction matters for personal budgeting: the historical figure should not be treated as a present-day delivered-and-installed cost. Even the current unit-only price excludes permits, site work, shipping and installation, while turnkey pricing begins at a higher amount and remains site-dependent. The historical projection appears in the 2021 SEC-hosted offering memorandum.

Is Elon Musk’s house a BOXABL Casita?
The evidence available for this article does not verify that Musk lived in a BOXABL Casita. A secondary account surfaced an attribution about a modest South Texas residence and BOXABL, but no primary source suitable for confirming or quoting that statement was established. It is therefore not sound to present “Elon Musk’s home” as a verified description of the Casita.
The product can be assessed on its published specifications and costs without relying on an unverified celebrity connection.
