Is the Airbus H225 Super Puma really the world’s most expensive helicopter? The available sources do not establish that ranking. They do show why the H225 is a high-value aircraft: it is a heavy twin-engine helicopter built for demanding transport and utility work, with a published maximum takeoff weight of 11,160 kg and a maximum cargo sling load of 4,750 kg. A trade publication reported historical prices for a 2016 aircraft, but Airbus does not publish a current price in the sources cited here.
What the Airbus H225 is
The H225 is Airbus’s civil, heavy twin-engine member of the Super Puma family. It is designed for demanding passenger transport and utility missions, including offshore energy operations and search and rescue (SAR). The military H225M is a separate variant with different missions and configurations; figures and roles for the civil H225 should not automatically be applied to it.
Airbus lists two Safran Helicopter Makila 2A1 engines, each with takeoff power of 1,567 kW (2,101 shp). Published specifications describe a particular aircraft and configuration; operators may equip the helicopter differently for its intended work.

The following are Airbus’s published technical figures, accessed in 2026. Range and endurance depend on fuel configuration and operating conditions; the stated standard-tank range is specifically at sea level.

Airbus also shows distinct cabin layouts for 19-seat passenger/offshore transport, 11-seat VIP transport and eight-seat SAR. These are alternative arrangements, not seats available alongside every mission system at once. Airbus’s technical information page lists the figures above: H225 technical information.
What H225s are used for
Offshore energy transport
For offshore work, Airbus describes an air-conditioned cabin for up to 19 passengers, heavy-lift capability and an automatic rig approach mode called Rig ’N Fly. The aircraft can also be reconfigured for over-water SAR, though the transport and rescue layouts are not carried as if they were one simultaneous configuration.

Search and rescue
Airbus describes SAR capabilities that include search patterns, automatic transition to hover and cabin-crew hover control. Optional mission equipment includes searchlights, radar, a direction finder, a dual hoist and stretchers. Airbus says the H225 and H225M have been selected and operated by 22 countries for SAR; that is Airbus’s reported figure, not an independently presented global dataset.
Aerial work and firefighting
Airbus lists powerline repair, pylon assembly, cable laying, aerial pruning and air-crane work among the H225’s aerial-work roles. Its maximum sling-load figure is 4.75 tonnes, subject to aircraft configuration and operating conditions. Firefighting equipment can include belly tanks, belly water cannons and water-bombing kits.

VIP and government transport
A VIP layout can accommodate up to 11 passengers. As with the offshore and SAR layouts, the seating arrangement is specific to the aircraft’s configuration.

What is known about the H225’s price
A 2022 Business Jet Traveler article reported a new retail price above $23 million for a 2016 H225 and listed $8 million for a 2016 aircraft. Those are historical figures reported by a secondary publication, not a current Airbus quote or a verified price for a newly delivered helicopter. The article does not establish that the two figures use identical equipment or transaction assumptions.
No current official Airbus price or defensible comparison across helicopter models is established by these sources, so “the world’s most expensive helicopter” should be treated as an unverified claim. A purchase price can vary with the aircraft’s year, mission equipment and configuration, support package and contract terms; the sources do not quantify those components. Recent H225 orders and reported fleet figures
On 7 April 2026, Airbus announced that Vietnam Helicopter Corporation subsidiaries had ordered three H225s. The release said the aircraft would support expanding offshore energy operations and progressively replace ageing fleet aircraft, joining VNH’s existing Airbus fleet for offshore transport, utility, SAR and broader transport work.
In that same 7 April 2026 release, Airbus reported more than 360 H225 and H225M aircraft in service worldwide and more than one million flight hours. Those are manufacturer-reported totals as of the release, rather than a current independent fleet count. Airbus’s announcement is available at VNH orders H225 for offshore operations.
