Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly bought their gated Montecito estate for $14.65 million in an off-market deal that closed in June 2020. Coverage described a roughly 14,500-square-foot main house, a separate guesthouse and amenities ranging from a theater and spa facilities to a tennis court and pool. Those details come from 2020 reporting and listing copy; they are not an inspection of the property’s present condition.

What was reported about the purchase?

The Los Angeles Times reported that the couple’s estate closed in June 2020 in an off-market sale for $14.65 million. The newspaper said tax records for a seven-acre property matched limited liability companies previously created by Meghan Markle; that connection is the Times’ reporting, not an independent title verification here.

The Irish Times reported that the property had previously been listed as high as $34.5 million, was relisted at $16.975 million in 2020, and sold for $2.325 million below that asking price. The Times reported an earlier asking price of up to $34 million. Asking prices are not sale prices, and the reported June 2020 transaction is the relevant figure for what the buyers reportedly paid.

How large is the estate, and what is in the house?

The Los Angeles Times described a seven-acre property in Montecito, Santa Barbara County, with a main house of about 14,500 square feet. The Irish Times gave the acreage as 7.4 acres and also reported a roughly 14,500-square-foot house. The difference in acreage should be treated as a discrepancy between published accounts, not resolved into a precise surveyed figure.

Room counts also vary by description: the Times specified nine bedrooms in the main house, while the Irish Times described the home as having nine bedrooms and 16 bathrooms. The latter count is not identified as a separate count for the main house versus the wider estate.

Features attributed to 2020 coverage

  • The Times described a winding stone-paved drive, gated and hedged frontage, a living room with a coffered ceiling, and a billiards or game room.
  • Reported entertainment and wellness spaces included a home theater, spa facilities, gym and elevator.
  • Outdoor features included a swimming pool, tennis court and custom jungle gym.
  • The Times reported a separate two-bedroom guesthouse and a tea house.
  • Listing copy relayed by the Irish Times additionally described a library, office, dry and wet saunas, arcade, wine cellar and five-car garage.
  • The same listing description mentioned landscaped grounds with rose gardens, cypress, lavender and olive trees.

These are descriptions published in 2020, including listing material relayed by news outlets. They establish what was reported at the time, not which furnishings, facilities or landscaping remain today.

What is known about the estate’s value today?

In an article updated August 21, 2026, realestate.com.au cited a Realtor.com automated estimate of $23.4 million. That is a model-generated estimate reported by the outlet, not a new appraisal or a confirmed sale price. The outlet noted that automated models may not account for private improvements or a celebrity premium.

Forensic real estate appraiser Orell Anderson, president of Strategic Property Analytics, Inc., told the outlet: “At this end of the market, I’d start with the land, not the house,” and “The house can be changed. The land cannot.” He pointed to factors such as land, privacy, views and access. The article also discussed much higher figures some might suggest based on ownership and location, but Anderson questioned whether market evidence supports that range; those figures should not be read as his appraisal.

Have Harry and Meghan sold the Montecito estate?

August 2026 coverage discussed possible future sale scenarios but did not verify a listing or completed sale. An August 20 report relayed sale speculation and possible off-market discussions; an August 21 report said sources indicated the couple had no current plan to sell. These accounts differ and establish neither a sale plan nor a change in ownership. A confirmed transaction would require reliable reporting of a completed sale, not speculation or an automated estimate.
