Mark Zuckerberg’s Koʻolau Ranch on Kauaʻi is a private family property and continuing construction project, not a visitor attraction. WIRED’s reporting through July 2025 describes residences, guest housing, ranch and recreation facilities, a water system, and a tunnel-connected underground shelter. The compound’s scale and features have drawn scrutiny, but the available reporting does not establish that the shelter was built for an apocalyptic scenario—or that every described building is finished.
What is on the property?
WIRED’s December 2023 investigation described two large residences, guest houses, ranch operations buildings, a gym, a tennis court, treehouses, and water infrastructure. Its account drew on sources and planning documents; it did not establish that all of those features were complete or in use.
Planning documents reviewed by WIRED described a planned underground shelter of about 5,000 square feet, with a metal-and-concrete door. The same reporting described a water tank about 55 feet in diameter and 18 feet tall, with a pump system. The family spokesperson declined to comment on the shelter’s size or bunker-like qualities.
In July 2025, WIRED reported continuing construction and described three newer large buildings. Two of them had 16 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms between them, according to the article. The family spokesperson characterized the new buildings as short-term guest housing for family, friends, and staff. WIRED also reported two existing pump buildings and a planned new one, as well as a tunnel leading to the underground shelter, which it described as having blast-resistant doors and an escape hatch.

WIRED estimated potential capacity from bedrooms listed in documents; that is a reporter’s estimate, not an official occupancy figure. The reporting documents a shelter and its reported features, but not a confirmed end-times purpose. The often-used label “doomsday bunker” goes beyond what the cited evidence establishes.
How large is Koʻolau Ranch, and what did it cost?
The reported acreage is not one continuous tract: WIRED said the 2025 ranchland purchase was across the road from the original compound. The figures below reflect different kinds of records and estimates, not a single audited account.

The family spokesperson confirmed an additional ranchland purchase in WIRED’s 2025 report but did not comment on its size or price. The acreage, sale-price estimates, market valuation, and project-investment estimates answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why did the land purchases provoke opposition?
One major dispute involved kuleana parcels—small land interests held by descendants within the larger property. WIRED and The Guardian reported that entities connected to Zuckerberg filed quiet-title and partition lawsuits in 2016. The process could require descendants to sell their shares or compete for the parcels at auction, bringing a family landholding dispute into a public legal process.

After public backlash, Zuckerberg said he would abandon direct involvement. The legal process continued through Carlos Andrade, a descendant who ultimately won the parcels at auction. WIRED reported in 2025 that Andrade’s family now holds them in a trust. The dispute was not simply about a property line: kuleana rights carry historical and cultural significance for descendants.
Critics quoted by WIRED and The Guardian have raised concerns about concentrated land ownership, limited community engagement, secrecy around construction, and the effects of wealthy newcomers acquiring land. These are reported concerns and perspectives, not findings of an independent assessment of the project’s effects.

What has been reported about graves and burial sites?
WIRED reported in July 2025 that descendant Julian Ako gained access to identify and register his great-grandmother’s and her brother’s graves with Hawaiʻi’s Department of Land and Natural Resources. The article said the agency confirmed the probability of additional burial sites based on oral testimony. That is distinct from the two graves Ako identified; the reporting does not establish the number or locations of any other sites.
The family representative told WIRED that the estate had known about the family burial plot since 2015, had fenced it off and maintained it, and required that inadvertent discoveries of iwi—Native Hawaiian ancestral remains—be reported under applicable regulations. The representative’s account and the descendant’s concerns should be understood alongside the agency’s stated probability of additional sites, not as proof that all burial concerns have been resolved.

What purpose does the family say the ranch serves?
As reported by WIRED, the family’s public position is that the property supports ranching, farming, conservation, open space, and wildlife protection. The representative also said the family canceled a former owner’s plan for 80 luxury homes. These are the family’s stated rationale and account; they do not, by themselves, establish the project’s environmental or community impacts.
In its December 2023 story, WIRED quoted spokesperson Brandi Hoffine Barr saying: “Mark and Priscilla value the time their family spends at Koolau Ranch and in the local community and are committed to preserving the ranch’s natural beauty.” The scale of the acquisitions and construction has nonetheless prompted local concern about who can control land, how community members are consulted, and what happens to cultural heritage on a large private holding.
In July 2025, WIRED quoted Pualiʻi Rossi, a professor of Native Hawaiian studies at Kauaʻi Community College, criticizing the new land purchase: “If our island has any hope of remaining Hawaii, this kind of activity has got to stop.” The disagreement is over more than the stated use of individual buildings: it also concerns land concentration, local voice, and the meaning of stewardship.
What is known about Ka Loko reservoir?
The Guardian reported that a 110-acre acquisition in 2021 included Ka Loko reservoir. Its account recalled the 2006 dam failure, which released 400 million gallons and killed seven people, and described the reservoir as high-risk and unrepaired at the time of that reporting. The spokesperson told The Guardian that the family would meet legal requirements. That historical account does not establish the reservoir’s repair or compliance status today.
