The latest official consumer-price figure available in the supplied data is 4.82% for August 2026, but it does not establish that inflation has risen from the previous month, and it does not predict an immediate increase in bank fixed-deposit (FD) rates. If you need a known return for a defined period, book an FD at a rate and tenure you consider acceptable. If you can tolerate uncertainty and do not need to earn interest immediately, waiting is an option—but a higher future rate is not guaranteed.
What the latest inflation data actually says
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) reports consumer-price inflation of 4.82% for August 2026. The corresponding CPI index was 108.74, while consumer food-price inflation was 5.95%. The official catalogue in the supplied data lists August as the latest available reference month; it does not provide a September figure.

Therefore, the statement “inflation is up again” cannot be treated as established from this figure alone. More importantly for an FD decision, inflation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) policy rate and an individual bank’s deposit card are related but not mechanically linked. A bank can leave FD rates unchanged, reprice only selected tenures or move rates before or after a policy change.
Why inflation does not guarantee a higher FD rate
The RBI snapshot dated July 10, 2026 shows a 5.25% policy repo rate and an aggregate 6.00%–6.60% term-deposit rate range for deposits over one year. Those are dated system-level reference figures, not a current quote from a particular bank on October 13, 2026.

Banks set deposit rates according to funding needs, liquidity, competition, expected loan demand and their view of future interest rates. Even an RBI policy move may not produce an immediate, equal change in every FD tenure. Treat the July snapshot as context, not as a promise about your renewal rate.
What a 1 percentage-point increase means for a ₹2 lakh FD
A one-percentage-point annual difference on ₹2,00,000 equals ₹2,000 gross interest over one year under a simple-interest illustration. At illustrative annual rates of 6% and 7%, the gross interest is:

| Illustrative annual rate | Simple gross interest on ₹2,00,000 for one year | Difference versus 6% |
|---|---|---|
| 6% | ₹12,000 | — |
| 7% | ₹14,000 | ₹2,000 |
These are arithmetic examples, not current bank offers or maturity quotes. Actual proceeds depend on the exact tenure, cumulative or periodic payout, compounding convention, tax, and the bank’s contract. “1% hike” should be read carefully: a move from 6% to 7% is a one percentage-point increase, or a 16.67% relative increase in the rate.

Book now or wait: the decision framework
Book now when certainty matters
- You need a guaranteed rate for a known goal or cash-flow date.
- The available rate meets your return requirement after considering tax.
- You cannot afford to leave the money idle while waiting for an uncertain repricing.
- You want to lock a long tenure before your preferred rate potentially falls.
Booking fixes the applicable offer for the selected term according to the bank contract. A later rate increase generally does not change the rate on an already booked fixed-rate deposit.

Wait when flexibility is worth more than certainty
- You have a liquid alternative for the interim and can accept no guarantee of a higher FD rate.
- Your deposit date is flexible and a short wait will not jeopardize a goal.
- You are monitoring a specific bank’s dated rate card rather than assuming that inflation will force a rise.
Waiting has a measurable cost: interest forgone while the money remains outside the FD. If rates do not rise, or rise by less than expected, waiting can leave you worse off than booking now.
Use a ladder only if the terms fit
You may divide ₹2 lakh among deposits with different maturities so that portions mature at different times. Do this only when the bank permits the structure you need and your liquidity plan accounts for premature-closure rules. A ladder spreads reinvestment dates; it does not forecast rates or guarantee a better return.

How to compare an FD before you deposit
- Match the tenure. Compare rates for the same number of months or years and the same depositor category, including any senior-citizen eligibility.
- Check the payout method. Cumulative deposits reinvest interest until maturity; monthly or quarterly options pay cash earlier. Compare the bank’s stated compounding and maturity calculation.
- Confirm callable status. A callable deposit may permit withdrawal under stated conditions; a non-callable product can restrict access and may price differently.
- Read premature-withdrawal terms. Check the rate adjustment and any penalty before signing. RBI directions state: “Interest shall be paid at the rate applicable to the amount and period for which the deposit remained with the bank and not at the contracted rate.” This direction concerns premature withdrawal, so an early exit can reduce the return from the advertised rate.
- Calculate tax separately. Interest is generally taxable according to your circumstances. The gross ₹2,000 illustration is not an after-tax gain.
- Check deposit insurance aggregation. DICGC cover is up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, including principal and interest, with deposits in the same right and capacity aggregated and subject to scheme conditions and exclusions. Add your existing balances at that bank before deciding how much to place there.
A practical choice for the ₹2 lakh decision
If the money is needed within a known timeframe, compare current rate cards for that exact tenure and lock the amount that meets your objective. If you are undecided, consider splitting the deposit into portions with different maturities rather than keeping the entire sum uninvested—but only after checking liquidity, penalties and insurance aggregation. Do not increase risk or extend tenure merely to chase a possible future rate.
What is and is not known about future rates
No official forecast in the supplied material establishes the next retail FD-rate change. The August inflation reading and the July RBI snapshot provide economic context, not a rate prediction. Recheck the bank’s dated terms immediately before booking and record the offered rate, tenure, payout choice, renewal instruction and premature-closure rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4.82% inflation enough reason to delay an FD?
No. It is the latest August 2026 CPI figure identified, but it does not prove a month-on-month increase or guarantee that any bank will raise FD rates.
How much extra does a 1 percentage-point rate make on ₹2 lakh?
₹2,000 gross over one year in a simple-interest illustration. The actual difference changes with tenure, compounding, payout frequency and tax.
The Bottom Line
Choose the certainty of booking now if the current rate and tenure meet your goal. Wait only if you can forgo interim interest and accept that rates may not rise; inflation alone is not a reliable timing signal.
