Infineon’s “more layoffs” story is primarily the continuation of its Step Up restructuring program, announced on May 7, 2024—not a separately quantified company-wide mass-layoff announcement in 2026. The clearest site-specific figure is approximately 500 positions at the company’s Regensburg, Germany, plant, particularly in production. At the time, Infineon said it did not plan compulsory redundancies.
The semiconductor maker has continued to reduce costs and streamline its organization while investing in research and development, AI-data-center power products, and a new Dresden factory. The evidence therefore points to selective contraction and reallocation, rather than a retreat from semiconductors.

What Infineon has announced
Infineon announced its Step Up structural-improvement program on May 7, 2024. The company described the initiative as a group-wide effort to improve competitiveness and profitability, adjust operations to market conditions, and make its organizational structure more efficient.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters. “Restructuring” can include job eliminations, vacancies that are not refilled, natural attrition, partial retirement, negotiated departures, transfers, capacity changes, and organizational redesign. It does not automatically mean that every reduction in reported headcount represents a compulsory layoff.

Infineon’s 2025 annual report says Step Up remained active during fiscal 2025. The company recorded €139 million in restructuring and related closure costs, compared with €232 million in fiscal 2024; most of the fiscal 2025 costs were directly related to Step Up. See the Infineon 2025 annual report.
How many jobs are affected?
The strongest publicly reported site-specific figure is around 500 positions at Regensburg. Contemporary reporting described the number as a mid-three-digit reduction and said production would be particularly affected. The European Restructuring Monitor’s account records the planned measures and their implementation.
That figure should not be presented as the confirmed total for every Infineon location. Nor should Infineon’s global workforce decline be described automatically as 1,896 layoffs.

But a change in total employees can reflect attrition, retirement, hiring patterns, divestitures, transfers, outsourcing, acquisitions, or other workforce movements. The annual report does not establish that all 1,896 departures were layoffs under Step Up.

Where are the cuts occurring?
Regensburg is the clearly documented location. The reported plan particularly affected production there. IG Metall characterized the reduction as significant and argued that production was being moved to lower-cost foreign locations. That is the union’s position and should not be treated as an undisputed description of Infineon’s company-wide strategy.
Infineon’s annual report also shows workforce changes across regions between September 2024 and September 2025:
- Germany: down by 126 employees;
- Asia-Pacific excluding Japan and Greater China: down by 918;
- the Americas: down by 981;
- the United States: down by 694;
- Europe overall: broadly stable.
These figures describe changes in reported workforce totals, not a published location-by-location breakdown of Step Up layoffs. They should therefore be used as context rather than as a tally of redundancies.
Were the Regensburg cuts compulsory layoffs?
For the Regensburg plan reported in 2024, no compulsory redundancies were planned at that time. The reported approach relied on a combination of:
Rank #3
- EVALUATION BOARD: NRF9151-DK development board from Nordic Semiconductor designed for cellular IoT and GNSS applications
- CONNECTIVITY: Features both cellular connectivity and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) capabilities for location-based applications
- DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM: Ideal for prototyping and testing IoT devices, supporting cellular network communications
- COMPATIBILITY: Designed to work with Nordic Semiconductor's development tools and software development kit
- APPLICATIONS: Perfect for creating IoT solutions, asset tracking systems, and location-aware connected devices
- natural attrition;
- vacancies that were not refilled;
- partial retirement;
- mutually agreed contract terminations; and
- works-council involvement.
This labor process produces a different immediate impact from a mass dismissal program. It can still reduce employment opportunities and local production capacity, but the number of people leaving may not equal the number of positions that disappear through compulsory termination.
Why is Infineon restructuring?
Infineon’s stated reasons are competitiveness, profitability, and a more efficient structure. The financial backdrop helps explain the pressure. In fiscal 2025:
- revenue fell 2% to €14.662 billion;
- Segment Result fell 18% to €2.560 billion;
- Segment Result margin declined from 20.8% to 17.5%.
The company cited price reductions, currency effects, and higher underutilization costs. Automotive markets were also difficult, particularly in parts of electric mobility. When semiconductor demand weakens in some end markets, manufacturers may reduce capacity or consolidate roles even while increasing spending in faster-growing product areas.
That is the central business logic behind Step Up: reduce costs and align resources with demand rather than maintain the same workforce and capacity mix everywhere.

- Development Platform: nRF52833-DK evaluation board designed for prototyping and testing Bluetooth
- BLE, Thread, and Zigbee applications using the nRF52833 SoC
- Wireless Connectivity: Supports multiple protocols including Bluetooth
- (BLE), 802.15.4 (Thread, Zigbee) operating at 2.4GHz frequency for versatile wireless development
- Integrated Antenna: Features PCB trace antenna built directly on-board for immediate testing and development without requiring external antenna components
Infineon is also expanding in selected areas
The layoffs cannot be understood in isolation from Infineon’s investment plans. The company’s research and development workforce increased 6% year over year to 13,998 people at September 30, 2025.
Infineon also reported strong growth in power-supply components for AI servers. Revenue from that business rose from approximately €250 million to more than €700 million during fiscal 2025. In a later company update, Infineon described AI-data-center power as a major growth opportunity.
The company is also continuing to invest in Germany. In May 2025, it received final German government funding approval for its new Dresden Smart Power Fab. The project is expected to create direct jobs, but new hiring at Dresden should not be treated as a one-for-one offset for reductions at Regensburg or elsewhere unless the job numbers and categories are directly compared. See Infineon’s Dresden funding announcement.

What changed in 2026?
In its May 6, 2026 second-quarter update, Infineon said it was continuing to streamline its organizational structure. It also said the business would move from four segments to three beginning in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. The company raised its full-year outlook and cited stronger AI-infrastructure demand.
That release did not quantify a new company-wide headcount reduction. As of August 18, 2026, the available official material therefore supports this chronology:
- May 7, 2024: Infineon announces the Step Up structural-improvement program.
- May 8, 2024: reporting identifies approximately 500 positions at Regensburg as affected, with production particularly exposed.
- Fiscal 2025: Infineon records €139 million in restructuring and related closure costs.
- September 30, 2025: reported global headcount falls to 57,213 from 59,109 a year earlier.
- May 6, 2026: Infineon announces further organizational streamlining and a future three-segment structure, but no new company-wide layoff figure.
Accordingly, claims that Infineon has just announced an additional quantified wave of layoffs in 2026 require a separately dated company, works-council, union, regulatory, or other reliable source.

What the restructuring means for investors and workers
For workers, the most immediate documented impact is at Regensburg, especially in production. The use of attrition, partial retirement, negotiated departures, and vacancy controls may reduce compulsory dismissals, but it can still shrink a site’s workforce and change its long-term role.
For investors, the figures show a company under margin and utilization pressure in parts of its business, not one abandoning growth altogether. Falling revenue and profitability support the case for cost reduction. Rising R&D employment, AI-power revenue, Dresden investment, and the improved 2026 outlook show where Infineon is directing resources instead.
The key risk in interpreting the headline is to confuse a global headcount change with a confirmed layoff count, or to treat ongoing restructuring as proof of a newly announced mass-layoff round. The more defensible reading is that Infineon is reshaping its workforce and production footprint while trying to expand in higher-growth semiconductor markets.
