Indonesia uses the rupiah (IDR), written locally with the symbol Rp. Bring a mix of payment methods: cards are commonly accepted in major cities and tourist destinations, while cash is essential for many smaller shops, markets and remote areas. Exchange or withdraw enough rupiah in a major destination before travelling somewhere secluded, and check your card issuer’s fees and limits.
What currency does Indonesia use?
Indonesia’s currency is the rupiah. Its international code is IDR, and the local symbol is Rp. Bank Indonesia issues the currency. The official visitor guide lists banknotes of IDR 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000, and coins of IDR 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000. Indonesia Travel’s currency guide has the denomination list.
For example, Rp 50,000 means fifty thousand rupiah. Exchange rates change, so check a current rate when planning a budget rather than relying on an old conversion. Indonesia’s legal-tender rule is also explicit: in a January 28, 2021 release, Bank Indonesia stated that “the rupiah is the only legal tender in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia and must be used for all payment transactions within the territory of the Republic of Indonesia.”
Should I bring cash to Indonesia?
Yes. Keep rupiah cash alongside a card, especially if your itinerary includes smaller towns, remote destinations or traditional markets. The official visitor guidance says these areas may have few ATMs and that local shops may accept cash only. Small notes and coins are useful for market purchases and other low-value transactions. Indonesia Travel’s payment guidance recommends carrying small change for remote areas and local markets.

Can I use my credit card in Bali or Jakarta?
Often, but not everywhere. Indonesia Travel says international card networks are generally accepted in major cities and tourist hotspots, including Jakarta and Bali as well as Bandung, Surabaya, Medan and Yogyakarta. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; JCB is accepted through affiliated banks, while American Express has fewer affiliated local banks.
Because acceptance depends on the merchant, ask before ordering or making a purchase if you are unsure. Keep cash available for businesses that do not take cards, rather than assuming a foreign card will work at every location.
Where can I exchange money in Indonesia?
Indonesia Travel says foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and money changers in major cities, and that most tourist resorts have money-changing facilities. Arrange some rupiah before travelling to a more remote area rather than counting on finding an exchange counter or ATM there.

It may, if the ATM supports a network on your card and your issuer allows the transaction. Indonesia Travel names Plus, Cirrus and Alto among the networks commonly available in major cities and tourist destinations. Check for a matching logo on the ATM and confirm your home bank’s international-use settings, withdrawal limits and fees before departure. The withdrawal limit depends on your home bank.

Do not spend or pass on a note that seems suspicious. Bank Indonesia says it alone determines whether rupiah is genuine. Preserve the note’s physical condition and report it to a nearby bank branch or police station, or ask a nearby Bank Indonesia branch for clarification. If a note is determined not to be genuine, it cannot be exchanged. See Bank Indonesia’s counterfeit prevention and management guidance.

How much cash can I bring into Indonesia?
Official Indonesian pages phrase the rupiah declaration threshold differently, so do not treat the figures as interchangeable. Indonesia Travel’s payment page says cash above IDR 100,000,000 must be declared to customs. The Directorate General of Customs and Excise portal says qualifying cash or payment instruments valued at Rp 100,000,000 or more must be declared, and separately refers to foreign banknotes at least equivalent to Rp 1,000,000,000.
If you plan to carry a large sum, check the current requirements directly with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise before departure. Confirm which instruments and thresholds apply to your situation; do not rely on a simplified cash-only summary.
