The shutdown also removed a space later described as unusually hyperlocal, and moving to a different app did not guarantee that creators could bring their audiences or livelihoods with them.
What happened when India banned TikTok?
In June 2020, India banned TikTok along with dozens of other Chinese apps. Contemporaneous reports described the government’s stated concerns in terms of security, sovereignty and data privacy. TikTok later said it had not shared Indian users’ information with foreign governments or used it in a way that compromised India’s integrity. Those are the government’s rationale and TikTok’s response, respectively; the sources cited here do not independently resolve the underlying security claims.
The ban was a platform shock for people whose audience, visibility or commercial work depended on TikTok. It did not affect every creator equally, and the evidence does not support a single total for creator earnings lost across India.
How did the ban affect creators’ earnings?
TikTok had helped some creators reach viewers and attract companies seeking product promotion. Al Jazeera reported in July 2020 that cooking creator Geetha Sridhar had one million TikTok followers and earned an average of 50,000 rupees per month from companies promoting products in her videos. That is one creator’s reported experience at that time—not a typical income figure, a sector-wide average or an estimate of total losses.

When access to a platform ends, the loss can extend beyond income already being earned: a creator may also lose a channel for finding viewers and potential commercial partners. But individual accounts cannot establish how much all Indian creators lost. The cited reporting does not provide a robust, independently verified aggregate of earnings lost because of the ban.
Where did Indian TikTok creators and audiences go?
After the ban, creators and users moved to established services such as Instagram and YouTube. Indian short-video apps including Moj, Chingari and MX TakaTak also tried to fill the gap. In later reporting, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels gained ground, while many local alternatives struggled to match the larger companies’ reach and resources.

For a creator, moving platforms is not the same as transferring a livelihood. A following on one service does not automatically become an equally engaged audience on another; discovery, brand opportunities and the experience of making content can differ. Some creators rebuilt audiences and income, while others did not regain what they had lost. The available reporting describes these differences but does not provide a consistent dataset for ranking platforms by creator reach or earnings.
Why did the loss matter beyond follower counts?
Retrospective coverage describes Indian TikTok as a hyperlocal space, including creators from smaller cities and regional-language communities. That matters because a platform’s value is not just its headline audience size: it also lies in which voices become discoverable and which communities find one another.

Academic discussion of influencer labour in India highlights the precarity faced by socioeconomically marginalised creators who had found opportunity on the service. A sudden platform closure can therefore threaten more than an individual account’s numbers. It can unsettle access to visibility and work for people with fewer alternatives. This does not mean every creator experienced the same harm, or that none recovered elsewhere.
What do the audience figures tell us—and what can’t they tell us?
BBC Future’s 2024 retrospective reported that TikTok had 200 million users in India. That is the figure and scope attributed to that account; other sources use different audience estimates. It should not be combined with figures from other sources as though they measured the same population at the same time.

A large user base helps explain why the shutdown had wide potential reach, but it cannot show how many creators lost income or how much they lost. The reported example of Sridhar’s earnings illustrates a possible livelihood impact; it does not measure the experience of the creator economy as a whole.

For creators, an audience and a revenue stream tied to one service can both be vulnerable to a platform decision. Moving to more than one service may reduce dependence on a single channel, but it does not ensure that followers, discovery or commercial work will transfer. India’s experience shows the difference between finding another place to post and rebuilding the conditions that made a creator’s work viable.
