Those figures come from its FY24 report, published in November 2024: $3.8 billion is an estimate for the fiscal year, while $9.2 billion is a forecast—not a confirmed 2029 result. The report counts revenue from real-money gaming, in-app purchases, advertising and other sources.
What the $9.2 billion forecast means
Lumikai’s FY24 report put the Indian gaming market at $3.8 billion for FY24 and forecast that it would exceed $9.2 billion by FY29. The projected 20% CAGR describes the report’s expected growth over five years; it does not mean the market grows by exactly 20% in every year.
Here, “FY29” is the report’s fiscal-year horizon, not a calendar-year 2029 measurement. The figures should be read as a dated forecast from November 2024. The source material available does not confirm subsequent actuals, forecast revisions or a newer comparable estimate, so the projection should not be presented as a current market total.
Lumikai says its market estimates include subscriptions, in-app purchases (IAP) and advertising. Its revenue chart separately shows real-money gaming (RMG), IAP, ads and other revenue. Because industry estimates can use different definitions of gaming, geography, fiscal year and revenue channels, comparisons with other market totals require checking that their scope matches.

How Lumikai expects the revenue mix to change
The forecast is not simply for every segment to expand at the same pace. Lumikai projects IAP to grow fastest and become the largest revenue category by FY29, while RMG remains a substantial part of the market.

Why IAP is the biggest projected growth engine
Lumikai estimated that IAP revenue grew 41% year over year in FY24, while midcore games’ revenue grew 53%. It also reported 10% annual IAP revenue growth for casual and hypercasual games, and said ad revenue remained stable despite global pullbacks in advertising spend. These are reported historical results, not guarantees of future growth.
Why RMG still matters
Although Lumikai gives RMG a lower expected growth rate than IAP, it projects RMG revenue rising from $2.4 billion in FY24 to $3.6 billion in FY29. The report attributes roughly $400 million of FY24 topline growth to RMG platforms absorbing users’ goods and services tax (GST) cost and to a busy live-sports season that included two World Cups and the Indian Premier League. It also says taxation challenges compressed RMG margins and affected profitability. These are Lumikai’s explanations, not independently isolated causal estimates.

What the report says about gamers and spending
Lumikai counted 591 million gamers in FY24, including 148 million paying gamers. It says the market added 23 million gamers that year and paying gamers increased by 8 million. For this analysis, a gamer is a user who played a video game during the FY24 period. Lumikai also reports annual average revenue per paying user (ARPPU) of $22, up 15% from FY23.
Those modeled market estimates are distinct from the report’s survey findings. Its detailed survey note specifies 2,269 Indian smartphone users surveyed between September 2023 and September 2024. In that survey, 25% of gamers said they spent money in games, and 83% used UPI or digital wallets for in-game payments. The report’s publisher announcement separately describes its broader primary research as covering nearly 3,000 mobile users; the detailed sample figure is the one to use for these survey-specific findings.

More time spent, and a broad audience
Lumikai reports that average weekly gaming time increased from 10 hours in FY23 to 13 hours in FY24, a 30% rise. It also says India was the second-largest country by mobile-game downloads in FY24, with 15.2 billion downloads. That is a ranking by downloads, not by gaming revenue.
In the survey, 66% of gamers were from non-metro cities and 44% were women. Lumikai also reports that 43% were first-time earners aged 18–30. These are survey results from the stated sample, not census counts of all Indian gamers. The report further says that more than 60% of RMG-paying gamers also paid for midcore games, indicating overlap in its analysis rather than establishing a general preference for those products.

How to interpret the forecast
- Separate estimates from projections: FY24’s $3.8 billion is Lumikai’s estimate; the FY29 figure is a projection.
- Look at the mix, not only the headline: IAP’s projected 44% five-year CAGR is much higher than RMG’s 8%, making the forecast dependent on a major shift in revenue composition.
- Do not treat survey results as a census: demographic and payment findings describe respondents in the report’s smartphone-user survey.
- Keep definitions aligned: a total for “online gaming” may cover different products or revenue channels than Lumikai’s estimate. Check scope before comparing market sizes.
Lumikai’s report provides a dated market outlook, not proof that the market will reach the forecast. Its extracted executive-summary material does not provide enough detail to independently reproduce the market model or calculate uncertainty intervals.
