On Forbes India’s annual 2020 rich list, Mukesh Ambani ranked first with an estimated net worth of $88.7 billion. The list was published on October 8, 2020; its ranking is a historical snapshot, not a statement of anyone’s wealth today. The exact-title “India’s 10 Richest Billionaires In 2020” also appeared in a May Forbes Middle East feature tied to a March 18 cutoff, so the date and edition matter.

Forbes India’s 10 richest in October 2020

The Indian Express reproduced these ranks and wealth estimates from the October 2020 Forbes India Rich List. Values are in US dollars.

Rank Name on the list Estimated net worth
1 Mukesh Ambani $88.7 billion
2 Gautam Adani $25.2 billion
3 Shiv Nadar $20.4 billion
4 Radhakishan Damani $15.4 billion
5 Hinduja brothers $12.8 billion
6 Cyrus Poonawalla $11.5 billion
7 Pallonji Mistry $11.4 billion
8 Uday Kotak $11.3 billion
9 Godrej Family $11 billion
10 Lakshmi Mittal $10.3 billion

In this edition, the first-place estimate was more than three times the second-place estimate. Forbes India reported that the 100 people and families on its 2020 list had combined net worth of $517.5 billion, up 14% year over year. The Indian Express said half of those 100 saw gains amid the pandemic and India’s sharp economic contraction.

Why another 2020 ranking gives different answers

There was no single ranking that represented every day of 2020. Wealth estimates change with asset prices and valuation dates, and publishers’ lists use different snapshots. A February 18, 2020 Moneycontrol report on Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaires Index placed Radhakishan Damani second at $17.4 billion and Gautam Adani fifth at $13.8 billion. In the October annual list, Adani was second and Damani fourth. These are different dated snapshots, not evidence that one list corrected the other.

The May 2020 Forbes Middle East feature with the near-identical title reportedly finalized its list on March 18, before India’s late-March nationwide lockdown. Its search-result record says collective Indian billionaire wealth was $313 billion after a 23% fall, and Mukesh Ambani’s estimate was $36.8 billion. Because the underlying feature is not available in the cited record, its remaining ranks cannot be reliably reproduced here; those figures should not be mixed with the October annual list.

What the 2020 list says about its top names

Forbes India’s October list said Ambani remained India’s wealthiest person for the 13th year in a row and added $37.3 billion to his estimated net worth. It also noted that vaccine maker Cyrus Poonawalla entered the top ten at sixth, while Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw was the largest wealth gainer by percentage; pharmaceutical billionaires on the list saw their wealth rise. These are observations reported about that annual list, not current rankings.

How to read a billionaire ranking

When comparing wealth lists, check four details before comparing a name or dollar figure:

  • Publisher and edition: Forbes India’s annual rich list is distinct from Forbes’ real-time index and the Forbes Middle East feature.
  • Valuation date: a March cutoff, February index report and October annual list do not describe the same market moment.
  • Type of estimate: real-time index values can move, while an annual list is a dated estimate.
  • Currency and unit: the figures above are estimates in US dollars, expressed in billions.

For the question “Who topped the Forbes India rich list in 2020?”, the answer is Mukesh Ambani on the October annual list. For a question referring to the March-cutoff feature, the available record confirms his reported estimate but does not establish the full top ten.
