The ranking measures dollar sales—not copies sold or player numbers—and applies only to the U.S. market and that month.
What “the only December release to chart” means
The phrase refers to new games released in December 2024 that appeared on the month’s top-20 best-selling-games list. It does not mean the only games released in December, or that other new releases found no audience. Circana’s chart ranked Indiana Jones and the Great Circle at No. 14, marked as a new entry. The figures were reported by GamesBeat on January 24, 2025, with an update on June 18, 2025. GamesBeat’s report presents the data as a U.S. dollar-sales ranking.
That distinction matters: dollar sales can reflect prices and spending as well as the number of purchases, and the list does not measure total players. The article also reports that Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Infinity Nikki did not make the top 20. It separately notes that Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 appeared in daily-active-user reports for Steam and consoles. Those engagement rankings answer a different question from the sales chart.
December 2024’s U.S. top five
The reported top five were:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- Madden NFL 25
- EA Sports College Football 25
- EA Sports FC 25
- Super Mario Party Jamboree
Other entries included Elden Ring at No. 12 and Helldivers II at No. 15. Circana’s chart notes that digital sales were excluded for some marked titles; it specifically excludes Nintendo-platform digital sales for Minecraft. The chart therefore is not a fully comprehensive measure of every title’s sales across all platforms.

How game sales fit into the wider market
Circana’s December 2024 U.S. figures, as reported by GamesBeat, show a year-over-year decline in total spending, led by hardware. The categories measure different parts of the market:
| U.S. spending category | December 2024 | Change from December 2023 |
|---|---|---|
| Total video-game sales, projected to total market | $7.543 billion | Down 9%, from $8.282 billion |
| Video-game content | $5.761 billion | Down 5%, from $6.054 billion |
| Video-game hardware | $1.112 billion | Down 29%, from $1.555 billion |
| Video-game accessories | $671 million | Flat, compared with $673 million |
Content spending includes physical and digital full games, downloadable content and microtransactions, and subscriptions across multiple platforms. The reported mobile-spending figure came from Sensor Tower, according to the article’s table note. Total video-game sales is a broader category that includes content, hardware, and accessories, so it should not be read as another name for game purchases alone.

December compared with the full year
The annual U.S. picture was different from December’s downturn. For calendar year 2024, Circana reported total video-game sales of $58.659 billion, down 1% from $59.294 billion in 2023. Content spending increased while hardware spending fell:
| U.S. spending category | Calendar year 2024 | Change from 2023 |

How the game performed on Xbox
The overall No. 14 position is not the game’s only reported December measure. GamesBeat says Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ranked fourth in Xbox sales and third in Xbox play activity, according to Circana trackers. The report does not give dollar amounts or player counts for those positions. Xbox sales rank and play-activity rank are distinct measures, and neither changes the game’s No. 14 position on the overall U.S. dollar-sales chart.
