The rupee closed at ₹96.78 per US dollar on October 7, 2026, according to Business Standard, after reaching ₹96.86 during the session. The Reserve Bank of India’s displayed FBIL reference rate was ₹96.6230 at 1 p.m. that day. Those are different kinds of quotes, but both show that the headline figure of ₹90.5 is no longer current. The date of the ₹90.5 level is not established here, so it should not be treated as the latest record.
What was the rupee-dollar rate?
Exchange rates vary by time and by the type of quote. For October 7, reported figures were:
| Measure | Rate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| RBI-displayed FBIL reference rate | ₹96.6230 per US dollar | RBI’s current-rates page showed this rate as of 1 p.m. on October 7, 2026; it is a timestamped reference quote, not a live market tick. RBI |
| Market close | ₹96.78 per US dollar | Business Standard reported this as the October 7 close and described it as the rupee’s second-weakest close. Business Standard |
| Reported intraday low | ₹96.86 per US dollar | Business Standard reported this session low. Moneycontrol reported an intraday low of ₹96.60, against a previous close of ₹96.43; intraday observations can differ by timing or market source. Business Standard and Moneycontrol |
On October 6, the rupee closed at ₹96.42. The Economic Times reported that the May 2026 low of ₹96.96 was the all-time low at that point. The October 7 session figures do not exceed that intraday low, though exchange-rate records can change quickly. The Economic Times
Why is the rupee falling against the dollar?
Market reports around October 6–7 cited several pressures rather than one definitive cause. These included strong demand for dollars, global uncertainty, weak underlying dollar inflows, investor positioning around the RBI’s policy decision, overseas investor outflows, and dollar purchases by oil companies. Reports also said RBI intervention was likely to limit losses; these accounts describe market explanations, not proof that any one factor caused a particular rate move. The longer-term pressures include India’s merchandise trade deficit and net foreign investment outflows. The World Bank said the rupee depreciated by an average of 5 percent year on year over April–March 2026, with strong services exports, robust remittances, and RBI foreign-exchange sales partly offsetting those pressures. Its report put the rupee’s end-March 2026 low at ₹94.7 per dollar, a historical marker that was later surpassed. World Bank
What can the RBI do?
The rupee is market-determined: the government has said there is no target exchange-rate level or band. The RBI monitors the foreign-exchange market and can intervene when volatility is excessive, but intervention does not amount to a promise to defend a particular price. After its October 7 policy decision, the RBI raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 percent and moved its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening, Business Standard reported. Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the central bank would support orderly currency movement and keep volatility in check without targeting a specific level. He also said that various real effective exchange rate (REER) estimates suggested the rupee was not overvalued and could be undervalued; that is his assessment, not a settled conclusion. What a weaker rupee means for import costs
When the rupee buys fewer dollars, dollar-priced imports can cost more in rupees. That does not translate mechanically into a specific increase in petrol prices, inflation, or a household’s bills. The government has said the rupee’s effect on the oil import bill cannot be isolated one-to-one: the bill also depends on product requirements, contract timing, international and negotiated prices, and logistics costs such as maritime insurance. How much foreign-exchange support has been reported?
In a March 30, 2026 parliamentary answer, the government reported RBI net dollar sales of USD 50.8 billion from April 2025 to January 2026. It also reported reserves of USD 709.8 billion on March 13, 2026, equivalent to 11.2 months of goods imports. These dated figures provide context about intervention and reserves; they are not October 2026 reserve figures. Government of India, Lok Sabha answer
