At the same time, mutual-fund schemes recorded a combined net outflow of ₹1,33,375.57 crore. The figures show different results across categories; they do not prove that investors transferred money directly from other mutual funds into Gold ETFs.
How much flowed into Gold ETFs in September?
The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) reported ₹5,310.65 crore in Gold ETF funds mobilized during September 2026 and ₹860.04 crore in repurchases or redemptions. AMFI reported a net inflow of ₹2,596.70 crore in August. Comparing the two monthly net-flow figures, September’s was approximately 71.4% higher: (₹4,450.61 crore − ₹2,596.70 crore) ÷ ₹2,596.70 crore. The change refers to net flows, not gross subscriptions or investment returns. AMFI’s monthly fund data lists mobilization, redemptions and net flow as separate measures.
What does the mutual-fund outflow figure mean?
Across all mutual-fund schemes, AMFI reported a grand-total net outflow of ₹1,33,375.57 crore for September 2026—about ₹1.33 lakh crore. The report separately shows ₹1,33,060.04 crore in net outflows for open-ended schemes; the grand total is the appropriate figure when describing all schemes.
#1 Best Overall
A category can attract more money than it pays out while the broader fund universe has a net outflow. The overall total combines activity across different scheme categories and investor transactions; it does not mean every category had outflows. Gold ETFs are reported as a distinct category in AMFI’s tables.
Do the figures show investors switched from mutual funds to Gold ETFs?
No. The monthly totals establish that Gold ETFs had net inflows while mutual-fund schemes overall had net outflows. They do not identify the same investors, accounts or rupees moving between those categories, so they cannot establish a direct transfer or show that investors broadly abandoned other mutual funds.

Nor is the 71.4% increase a gain in Gold ETF unit prices, a return to investors, a forecast or a record. It is a comparison of September and August net flows.

The AMFI monthly report gives the category-level flow figures but does not attribute a specific cause to September’s increase in India. The data alone cannot tell whether investors were responding to prices, portfolio decisions or another factor.

There was also a positive global backdrop, but it is a separate measure. The World Gold Council reported US$10 billion of net inflows into physically backed gold ETFs globally in September 2026, alongside a 67-tonne increase in holdings to a record 4,256 tonnes. It reported that total assets under management fell 7% during the month to US$574 billion. Those global figures, published October 7, 2026, use a different geography and currency from AMFI’s India-only rupee data and do not establish why Indian investors bought Gold ETFs. The World Gold Council’s September report distinguishes fund flows—money invested in or withdrawn from funds—from changes in gold holdings.
