Indian drugmakers began launching generic semaglutide on 21 March 2026, after the reported expiry of India’s compound patent for the medicine the day before. By 8 October, BioPharma APAC counted 12 makers and 20 brands in the Indian market. The range of products does not mean there is one standard price or that every brand has the same approved use: dose, delivery format, prescription and current supply all matter.
What “generic Wegovy” means in India
Wegovy is a Novo Nordisk brand of semaglutide used for weight management. Semaglutide is the molecule; Wegovy is one branded product, not the name of every semaglutide medicine. Novo Nordisk also markets semaglutide as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and as Rybelsus in oral form. Products containing the same molecule can differ in dose, presentation, labeling and approved indication.
That distinction matters when comparing Indian launches. A brand’s appearance in news coverage does not establish that it is approved or available for every use associated with Wegovy, Ozempic or Rybelsus. Check the specific product’s current Indian labeling and have a registered medical practitioner determine whether it is appropriate for you.
Why the Indian launch date does not apply worldwide
Patent expiry is country-specific. The Indian compound patent was reported to expire on 20 March 2026, with generic launches beginning from 21 March. Novo Nordisk’s 2025 annual report lists different patent dates for the United States, China, Japan and Europe, and notes that other patents or regulatory protections can also affect market entry. An Indian launch therefore says nothing by itself about generic availability in another country.

Which brands were reported at launch?
Launch-period reporting identified several companies and product names. These are reported launches, not a complete live directory of products currently stocked or a confirmation that every named product has the same label.
| Company or group | Reported brand names | What the reporting established |
|---|---|---|
| Natco | Semanat and Semafull | The Indian Express reported launch presentations in 2 mg, 4 mg and 8 mg doses. |
| Zydus | Semaglyn, Mashema and Alterme, along with partner brands | Named in launch-period coverage; individual partner-brand details are not stated here. |
| Sun Pharma | Noveltreat | Named in launch-period coverage. |
By 8 October 2026, BioPharma APAC counted 12 generic makers with public launches and 20 brands. Brand count and manufacturer count are different: one maker or company group can be associated with multiple brands. The count is a dated market snapshot, not a guarantee that all products are still available.
What prices were reported—and why they are hard to compare
Semaglutide prices vary with strength and presentation. In particular, a vial, pen or cartridge is not a like-for-like comparison: the device and amount supplied can change the stated price. The figures below are reported launch or market figures for India, not a quote for an individual patient.

| Price detail | Reported amount | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Natco Semanat and Semafull, lowest dose | ₹1,290 per month | The Indian Express reported this as a launch-period company-stated monthly price for the lowest dose; it was not an independently audited retail price. |
| Natco Semanat and Semafull, highest dose | ₹1,750 per month | The Indian Express reported this as a launch-period company-stated monthly price for the highest dose; it was not an independently audited retail price. |
| Natco pen devices | ₹4,000–₹4,500 | The Indian Express reported company-announced pen-device prices at launch. The report did not establish these as a universal monthly treatment cost. |
| Cheapest stated generic price in the market analysis | ₹1,290 per month | BioPharma APAC’s 8 October 2026 analysis reported this as the lowest stated price it found; it said prices varied by strength and presentation and were not necessarily what patients paid after discounts. |
The March 12 pre-launch estimate of ₹3,000–₹4,000 a month was a forecast, not a post-launch market price. The same pre-launch report cited originator price ranges at that time of ₹8,800–₹11,175 for Ozempic and ₹10,850–₹16,400 for Wegovy. Those dated figures should not be treated as current prices, particularly because Novo Nordisk later reduced Ozempic and Wegovy prices effective 1 April 2026, according to the October market analysis.

Some oral-tablet or cartridge monthly amounts depend on how the product is prescribed. The October analysis describes its figures as stated list prices or maximum retail prices, not necessarily the patient’s discounted cost. Before comparing costs, confirm the prescribed strength, presentation, quantity, period covered and current pharmacy price.
Prescription status, eligibility and responsible use
Launch coverage described Indian semaglutide generics as prescription-only, dispensed on a prescription from a registered medical practitioner rather than available over the counter. A lower-dose product may be used for type 2 diabetes, while higher-dose treatment may be used for people with obesity or people who are overweight with related conditions; actual approved uses depend on the individual product’s label. The launch explainer also described lifestyle measures as continuing alongside treatment. These are general reported context, not a personal eligibility assessment or treatment recommendation.

The Indian Express quoted WHO guidance describing obesity as “a lifelong, chronic disease that requires holistic care including these therapies, surgeries, and other lifestyle interventions”. That framing is a reminder that a medicine purchase is not a substitute for ongoing clinical care.

The post-launch market has not been static. BioPharma APAC reported that generics reached 50% of India’s semaglutide market by value in April 2026. That is a dated market-share figure, not a measure of the number of patients using generics.

Promotion rules are relevant to consumers, too
A March 2026 advisory from India’s CDSCO was reported to warn manufacturers, importers and marketing authorization holders against promoting prescription GLP-1 medicines. The reported warning covered disease-awareness, influencer, corporate or similar campaigns that create visibility for a prescription product and could amount to surrogate advertising. CDSCO was quoted as saying: “Any promotional activity, including so-called awareness campaigns that function as a surrogate advertisement for prescription-only drugs shall be viewed seriously and may be treated as irrational or misleading marketing practice.”
For consumers, the practical point is to treat social-media promotion and brand visibility as advertising signals, not as evidence that a medicine is suitable, approved for a particular use or available from a trustworthy source. Regulatory interpretations and product availability can change; verify the current position in India.
