The entry was for unmarried male and female law graduates seeking a Short Service Commission in the Judge Advocate General Branch. What was the Indian Army JAG 34 entry?
The 2024 JAG Entry Scheme 34 notification invited unmarried men and women with law degrees to apply for a Short Service Commission in the Indian Army’s Judge Advocate General Branch. It listed 10 vacancies: five for men and five for women. Selection testing and the final merit lists were to be handled separately by gender, according to the JAG 34 notification.

Who could apply?
These requirements applied to JAG 34 and should not be assumed to apply to a later course. Candidates needed to meet the notice’s age, education, CLAT, professional-registration and nationality conditions.
Age
Candidates had to be 21 to 27 years old as of January 1, 2025. The permitted date of birth was January 2, 1998 through January 1, 2004, inclusive.

Law degree and marks
- At least 55% aggregate in an LLB degree.
- An eligible LLB could be either a three-year professional degree after graduation or a five-year degree after 10+2.
- The degree had to be from an institution recognized by the Bar Council of India.
- Applicants had to be eligible for registration as an advocate with the Bar Council of India or a state Bar Council.
CLAT PG and result verification
A CLAT PG 2024 score was mandatory, including for candidates who had completed or were appearing for an LLM. The notice required candidates’ CLAT PG results to be verified at the Selection Centre before the SSB. A candidate unable or unwilling to complete that verification would not be eligible to attend the SSB.
Nationality
The notice covered Indian citizens, subjects of Nepal and specified persons of Indian origin intending to settle permanently in India. Some categories required a Government of India certificate of eligibility, with an exception for Gorkha subjects of Nepal. The full nationality conditions and documentary requirements are set out in the course notification; applicants should consult that text rather than rely on a shortened summary.
How did candidates submit the form?
Applications had to be submitted online through the Join Indian Army portal. The contemporaneous application instructions were also summarized by Scroll.
- Visit joinindianarmy.nic.in.
- Select “Officer Entry Apply/Login” and register, or log in if already registered.
- Choose “Apply Online.”
- Find the Short Service Commission JAG Entry Course and select “Apply.”
- Complete and submit the application, then retain a printout for reference.
The notice did not accept offline applications and directed candidates to submit only one online application. It required applicants to keep a printout but said no hard copy had to be sent to the Directorate.

Shortlisting and SSB scheduling
The Army reserved the right to shortlist applications. Shortlisted candidates were assigned a Selection Centre and could choose from available SSB interview dates through the stated scheduling process.
Two-stage SSB and medical examination
The SSB process had two stages and could last up to five days. Candidates who did not pass Stage I were returned that day. Those recommended after Stage II proceeded to a medical examination.
Merit and joining
A recommendation did not by itself guarantee a joining letter. Joining depended on recommendation, medical fitness, merit position, vacancy availability and the candidate continuing to meet eligibility conditions.
What training and commission did the notice describe?
Successful candidates were to complete 49 weeks of pre-commission training at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. The government bore the training cost, subject to recovery in certain withdrawal circumstances. Graduates of the training were to receive a Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras.
The notice described an initial 10-year Short Service Commission, extendable by a further four years. Eligible and suitable officers could be considered for Permanent Commission in the tenth year under the policies applicable at that time. These terms describe the JAG 34 notice, not necessarily a later entry.

Use the Join Indian Army portal to find a current course notification. Confirm its application dates, eligibility rules, documents and selection schedule in that course’s own notice; the JAG 34 details above cannot establish the status or terms of a later recruitment.
