China’s share fell from 61% to 25%. These figures describe where imported phones were assembled—not the nationality of the brands or the share of U.S. phone sales won by Indian companies.
What does the 44% figure measure?
It is the share of smartphones imported into the United States in Q2 2025 that were assembled in India. The figure is specific to that quarter and to assembly origin. It does not mean that Indian-owned brands accounted for 44% of U.S. smartphone sales, nor does it establish that the same sourcing mix continued after Q2 2025.

Omdia reported that India-made smartphone volume increased 240% year over year in Q2 2025, while U.S. smartphone shipments overall grew 1%. The contrast points to a sharp shift in the sourcing mix during a quarter when the total market grew modestly.
Did India overtake China as the top smartphone supplier to the U.S.?
By assembly location, yes: India had the largest reported share of U.S. smartphone imports in Q2 2025. That is a quarterly ranking, not a statement about brand nationality or a permanent supplier position. The country shares below are reported figures and may not total exactly 100% because of rounding.

Why did India’s share rise?
Apple accelerated its shift to India
Omdia identified Apple’s supply-chain shift as the main driver of India’s gain. It said Apple had dedicated most of its India export capacity to the U.S. so far in 2025, and had begun manufacturing and assembling iPhone 16 series Pro models in India. That describes manufacturing activity and intended supply flows; it does not establish the assembly country of any particular retail unit.
Other manufacturers also increased India supply
Omdia said Samsung and Motorola expanded India supply for the U.S. market, but more slowly and on a smaller scale than Apple’s shift. Samsung relied mainly on Vietnam, while Apple and Motorola had core manufacturing hubs in China.

Tariff uncertainty and inventory frontloading
Omdia linked the supply-chain reorientation to uncertainty around U.S.-China trade negotiations. It also described vendors as frontloading devices and holding higher inventory to manage the risk of tariffs taking effect later in the year. Analyst Runar Bjorhovde said vendors continued to frontload devices and maintain high inventory “to best cope with the risk of tariffs coming into play later in the year.” Omdia reported that Apple built inventory toward the end of Q1 and sought to maintain it in Q2, while Samsung increased inventory in Q2. These are analysts’ explanations of company behavior in that period; the figures do not show that tariffs alone caused the shift.
What the figures do—and do not—say about phone buyers
The reported change is evidence of a manufacturing and sourcing shift, not a consumer verdict. The Omdia figures do not establish that a phone assembled in India is better or worse in quality, reliability, price, or value than one assembled elsewhere. Assembly origin alone is not a basis for choosing a phone.

Keep shipment and assembly data separate from brand performance. For example, Omdia separately reported Apple shipments down 11% year over year to 13.3 million units in Q2 2025, Samsung up 38% to 8.3 million, and Motorola up 2% to 3.2 million. Those vendor shipment figures are not country-of-assembly shares and should not be read as such.

A Canalys (part of Omdia) post also reports Vietnam’s 30% share and repeats key figures and analyst statements; it corroborates the reporting but is not independent confirmation.
