India Mutual Funds’ Average AUM Rose Nearly 5% in Q2FY27 Despite Equity Volatility

India’s mutual-fund industry recorded average quarterly assets under management (QAAUM) of ₹87.2 trillion in Q2FY27, up from ₹83.1 trillion in Q1FY27—a rise of nearly 5%, according to AMFI data reported by Business Standard on October 7, 2026. The increase came despite market-value pressure on equity schemes; reported inflows helped support the average, but the available July–August flow figures do not cover the full quarter.

How much did mutual-fund AUM grow in Q2?

Business Standard reported Q2FY27 QAAUM of ₹87.2 trillion, compared with ₹83.1 trillion in Q1FY27, describing the increase as nearly 5% and the strongest quarterly QAAUM growth in three quarters. Q2FY27 is July–September 2026 in India’s financial year.

QAAUM is an average across a quarter, not the amount of assets recorded on its final day. That distinction matters when comparing this result with a monthly average or a month-end figure.

Why did mutual-fund AUM grow despite equity market volatility?

The reported explanation is that inflows supported average assets even as market corrections reduced the value of some holdings. Business Standard said equity-scheme mark-to-market losses, particularly in large-cap schemes, and corrections in some debt schemes put pressure on valuations. It did not provide an index-return figure, so the scale of the market move cannot be quantified from this report.

For July and August together, active-equity schemes recorded net inflows of ₹54,000 crore, while net inflows across all categories were ₹2.8 trillion. Debt funds received the most across categories; hybrid and passive funds each attracted nearly ₹10,000 crore over those two months, according to Business Standard’s account of AMFI data.

The story attributed debt inflows to short-term institutional investment and active-equity inflows to systematic investment plan (SIP) contributions. Sense and Simplicity founder and CEO Sunil Subramaniam said, “SIPs alone have been accounting for the bulk of equity inflows.” These are explanations offered in the report, not evidence that every investor or fund category followed the same pattern.

Which figures cover the full quarter?

The nearly 5% increase is a comparison of Q1 and Q2 quarterly average AUM. The flow figures above are only for July and August. Business Standard said September inflows had not yet been released as of its October 7, 2026 report, so the two-month totals must not be treated as full-quarter flows or used to infer final Q2 category totals.

AMFI’s quarterly index listed April–June 2026 under FY2026-27 but did not yet list July–September 2026 when checked. The later scheme-level release is the place to look for full-quarter detail.

How does quarterly average AUM differ from monthly and month-end AUM?

These figures describe different measurement windows, so they are not interchangeable:

  • Quarterly average AUM (QAAUM): the quarter-level average used in the Q1-to-Q2 comparison.
  • Monthly average AUM (AAUM): SEBI defines this as the average of daily AUM during the month. AMFI reported August 2026 AAUM of ₹88.31 trillion.
  • Month-end AUM: assets measured at the end of a month. AMFI reported August 2026 month-end AUM of ₹87.08 trillion.

The August figures are monthly context, not substitutes for Q2 QAAUM. See AMFI’s August 2026 release and SEBI’s mutual-fund statistics for the respective monthly measures. SEBI also links to AMFI’s mutual-fund data resources.

AMFI says it has published AAUM quarterly since the quarter ended December 31, 2010. Its explanation of the measure is available on its quarterly average AUM page.
