On March 22, 2023, Indeed CEO Chris Hyams said the company anticipated eliminating approximately 2,200 roles—roughly 15% of its team. The planned cuts covered Indeed and Indeed Flex and were described as reaching nearly every team, function, level, and region. The figure was an estimate in the announcement, not a verified final tally.
What Indeed announced on March 22, 2023
In an employee message published by Indeed, CEO Chris Hyams said the company expected to let approximately 2,200 people go, about 15% of its team. The announced scope included Indeed Flex. Hyams said most employees outside the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Japan would receive an email about their status within an hour; local regulations meant the process would take longer in those four jurisdictions.
Hyams framed the decision as an effort to prepare for the future, align the organization with its strategy and priorities, and reduce duplicated work and inefficiency. He also said the hiring market was cooling and that HR Technology revenue might decline in fiscal 2023 and potentially again in fiscal 2024. Those were the company’s stated reasons and expectations at the time, not proof that any one factor alone caused the layoffs.
Why Indeed said it was reducing its workforce
Hyams pointed to weakening hiring indicators in the company’s March 2023 message. He said total U.S. job openings were down 3.5% year over year in the prior quarter and sponsored job volumes were down 33%. He also forecast that U.S. openings could fall to about 7.5 million or lower over the next two to three years. These are figures and a forecast cited in a 2023 announcement; they should not be read as current labor-market statistics.
Hyams summarized the company’s outlook this way: “With future job openings at or below pre-pandemic levels, our organization is simply too big for what lies ahead.”

Severance and support described in the announcement
The March 2023 message said support would vary by role and location. The terms it listed were:
- Severance of 16 weeks of base salary or two weeks per year of service, whichever was greater.
- Four months of COBRA coverage for U.S. employees.
- Accrued paid time off, where applicable.
- Specified cash treatment for RSUs scheduled to vest on May 1.
- Six months of career placement services and twelve months of mental-health services.
- Regular pay continuing through March 31, 2023.
These are historical terms stated in Indeed’s 2023 announcement. They do not establish what any individual employee ultimately received, and they are not current benefits or legal advice.

How the 2023 cuts differ from later workforce reductions
Indeed and its parent company announced separate reductions in 2024 and 2025. Their counts have different announcement dates and workforce scopes, so they should not be added to the 2023 estimate as though they were one revised total.
| Announcement | Reporting entity and scope | Announced scale | Stated focus or rationale |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 22, 2023 | Indeed, including Indeed Flex | Approximately 2,200 anticipated, roughly 15% of the team | Nearly every team, function, level, and region; cited a cooling job market, potential revenue decline, organizational alignment, and less duplication and inefficiency. Indeed CEO message. |
| May 13, 2024 | Indeed | Approximately 1,000 anticipated, roughly 8% of the company | Mostly U.S.-based, with emphasis on R&D and some Go-to-Market teams; the message cited simpler decision-making and support for revenue and hiring growth. Indeed CEO message. |
| July 11, 2025 | Recruit Holdings’ HR Technology segment, which operates Indeed and Glassdoor | Approximately 1,300, about 6% of the segment workforce as of April 1, 2025 | Segment-level parent-company disclosure; the cited release did not state a more specific rationale here. Recruit Holdings release. |
The 2025 percentage uses the HR Technology segment’s workforce as of April 1, 2025, not Indeed’s standalone workforce. The three announcements therefore describe distinct workforce actions with different denominators and scopes.
