Scope: The worked figures below use U.S. federal ordinary-income brackets for tax year 2026, generally reported in 2027, and the single-filer schedule unless noted. The workbook calculates taxable income and preliminary federal income-tax liability. Replace the table for another country, tax year, or filing status.
This is an estimating model, not filing software. It does not automatically calculate state or local tax, self-employment tax, net investment income tax, alternative minimum tax, capital-gains tax, credits, payroll withholding, penalties, or Form 1040 amounts.
What the Excel calculation should produce
Build the workbook around this sequence:
- Gross income
- Less applicable adjustments to income
- Adjusted gross income (AGI)
- Less the standard or itemized deduction
- Taxable income
- Preliminary federal income tax from the marginal brackets
- Less credits, plus other taxes, less payments and withholding, if those modules are added
For a basic calculator, stop at step 5 and calculate step 6. Use =MAX(0,AGI-Deduction) so negative taxable income cannot create a negative tax.
Keep inputs in cells rather than embedding numbers in formulas. A practical Inputs sheet contains:

2026 U.S. figures to use in the example
The IRS lists these 2026 standard deductions: $16,100 for single or married-filing-separately taxpayers, $24,150 for heads of household, and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. See the IRS 2026 inflation adjustments.
For a 2026 single filer, use this ordinary-income schedule from the IRS tax-rate tables:
| Taxable income | Calculation | LowerBound | Rate | BaseTax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $0–$12,400 | 10% of taxable income | $0 | 10% | $0 |
| $12,400–$50,400 | $1,240 + 12% of excess over $12,400 | $12,400 | 12% | $1,240 |
| $50,400–$105,700 | $5,800 + 22% of excess over $50,400 | $50,400 | 22% | $5,800 |
| $105,700–$201,775 | $17,966 + 24% of excess over $105,700 | $105,700 | 24% | $17,966 |
| $201,775–$256,225 | $41,024 + 32% of excess over $201,775 | $201,775 | 32% | $41,024 |
| $256,225–$640,600 | $58,448 + 35% of excess over $256,225 | $256,225 | 35% | $58,448 |
| Over $640,600 | $192,979.25 + 37% of excess over $640,600 | $640,600 | 37% | $192,979.25 |
These are single-filer values only. The IRS publishes separate schedules for all other filing statuses, including the 2026 married-filing-jointly table in Internal Revenue Bulletin 2025-45.
Why brackets must be calculated marginally
A bracket rate applies only to the income inside that layer. For example, with $115,000 of taxable income, the first $105,700 is taxed through the earlier layers; only $9,300 is taxed at 24%. Using the cumulative table, the calculation is =17966+(115000-105700)*24%, which produces $20,198 before credits and other adjustments. Entering a higher bracket does not apply that percentage to every dollar.

Formula
For a genuinely flat-rate system or a teaching example:
=MAX(0,B5-C5-D5)*E6
Here, B5 is gross income, C5 is deductions, D5 is exemptions or other permitted reductions in the hypothetical model, and E6 is the rate. A separate taxable-income cell is clearer:

=MAX(0,GrossIncome-Adjustments-Deduction)=TaxableIncome*TaxRate
When it is appropriate
- Demonstrating basic Excel arithmetic.
- Modeling a jurisdiction or special case that actually uses a flat rate.
- Showing why a flat-rate assumption is different from U.S. federal ordinary income tax.
Do not use it as a general U.S. federal liability formula. The earlier instructional example on ExcelDemy labels its flat rate as hypothetical.

Build the audit trail
Put taxable income in B5, then create one row per bracket:
| Layer | Taxable slice formula | Rate | Tax formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | =MIN(MAX(0,$B$5),12400) |
10% | Slice × 10% |
| 2 | =MAX(0,MIN($B$5,50400)-12400) |
12% | Slice × 12% |
| 3 | =MAX(0,MIN($B$5,105700)-50400) |
22% | Slice × 22% |
| 4 | =MAX(0,MIN($B$5,201775)-105700) |
24% | Slice × 24% |
| 5 | =MAX(0,MIN($B$5,256225)-201775) |
32% | Slice × 32% |
| 6 | =MAX(0,MIN($B$5,640600)-256225) |
35% | Slice × 35% |
| 7 | =MAX(0,$B$5-640600) |
37% | Slice × 37% |
Multiply each slice by its rate and total the tax column with =SUM(D12:D18) (adjust the range to your layout).
Strengths and weaknesses
- Strength: Every layer is visible and easy to reconcile to the bracket table.
- Strength: It avoids approximate-lookup behavior.
- Weakness: Threshold changes require editing several rows.
- Weakness: Repeated boundaries create opportunities for typing errors.
Solution 3: Nested IF
Single-cell formula
With taxable income in B5, a 2026 single-filer formula using cumulative base tax is:
=IF(MAX(0,B5)<=12400,MAX(0,B5)*10%,IF(MAX(0,B5)<=50400,1240+(MAX(0,B5)-12400)*12%,IF(MAX(0,B5)<=105700,5800+(MAX(0,B5)-50400)*22%,IF(MAX(0,B5)<=201775,17966+(MAX(0,B5)-105700)*24%,IF(MAX(0,B5)<=256225,41024+(MAX(0,B5)-201775)*32%,IF(MAX(0,B5)<=640600,58448+(MAX(0,B5)-256225)*35%,192979.25+(MAX(0,B5)-640600)*37%))))))
Absolute references such as $B$5 are necessary if you fill a formula down. This approach works in older Excel versions and returns one result cell, but every tax-law update requires rewriting the formula. It is difficult to maintain for multiple years or filing statuses, so keep it as a compact or legacy option rather than the main workbook architecture.

Solution 4: Lookup-table calculation
Design the table correctly
Create an Excel Table named Brackets with at least:
TaxYearFilingStatusLowerBoundRateBaseTax
BaseTax is the cumulative tax due at that row’s lower boundary. It is a dollar amount, not a percentage. The calculation is:
=BaseTax+(TaxableIncome-LowerBound)*Rate
Modern Excel formula
With taxable income in B5 and a table already filtered to the selected year and filing status:
=LET(t,MAX(0,B5),lower,XLOOKUP(t,Brackets[LowerBound],Brackets[LowerBound],,-1),rate,XLOOKUP(t,Brackets[LowerBound],Brackets[Rate],,-1),base,XLOOKUP(t,Brackets[LowerBound],Brackets[BaseTax],,-1),base+(t-lower)*rate)
Older Excel compatibility
Use VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH when XLOOKUP is unavailable. The lower-bound column must be first, sorted in ascending order, and looked up approximately on purpose. Lock the table range with absolute references or use structured references.
Why this is the preferred production pattern
- Changing a threshold or rate is confined to the table.
- Multiple tax years and filing statuses can coexist.
- The result remains readable and auditable.
- The distinction between rate and cumulative base tax is explicit.
The older ExcelDemy article is useful for seeing the four implementation patterns, but its displayed second-bracket example uses 20% where its prose says 12%, and its lookup expression should not be reused without checking what each returned column represents.

Recommended workbook architecture
Inputs sheet
Include tax year, filing status, gross income, adjustments, deduction method, deduction, optional credits, and payments or withholding. Use data validation for tax year and filing status.
TaxTables sheet
Store lower and upper bounds, rates, cumulative base tax, tax year, filing status, source URL, and a last-verified date. Keep each status and year’s rows together and sorted.
Calculation sheet
Show gross income, adjustments, AGI, deduction, taxable income, preliminary tax, credits, other taxes, payments, and estimated balance due or refund. Keep the preliminary-tax result separate from later modules.
Checks sheet
- Taxable income is not below zero.
- The selected year and filing status exist.
- Lower bounds are ascending.
- Rates are stored as percentages.
- Base-tax values reconcile at every boundary.
- Lookup results are not blank or errors.
Validation tests before relying on the workbook
- Enter $0 taxable income and confirm tax is $0.
- Test exactly $12,400, $50,400, $105,700, $201,775, $256,225, and $640,600.
- Test one dollar above every boundary.
- Test an amount above $640,600.
- Test negative AGI less deduction and confirm taxable income is zero.
- Repeat the tests for every supported filing status and tax year.
- Recalculate one result manually and compare it with the bracket table or official IRS schedule.
For tax-year updates, compare the table with the IRS brackets and the official rate tables. For withholding and estimated-tax work, consult Publication 505, the 2026 Form W-4, and the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.

Obsolete year
A formula can be mathematically correct while using outdated thresholds. Display the tax year on both the input and table sheets.
Wrong filing status
Never silently assume single. The same taxable income can produce a different result for joint, separate, or head-of-household filers.

Unsorted approximate lookup
An approximate lookup can return the wrong bracket without an obvious error when lower bounds are unsorted. Add a sort check and a visible warning.
Rate and base-tax confusion
Multiply excess income by Rate; add BaseTax as dollars. Do not add a percentage as though it were a dollar amount.
Missing credits and other taxes
The bracket result is preliminary tax. Nonrefundable and refundable credits, additional taxes, and payments belong in later calculation stages.
Withholding mistaken for liability
Annual liability is not the same as paycheck withholding. Withholding depends on payroll frequency, Form W-4 inputs, credits, deductions, and employer calculations.

Rounding inconsistently
For a general estimate, round only the final result to avoid cumulative slice-rounding differences. Filing or payroll work should follow the applicable official instructions.
Which solution should you choose?
| Method | Best use | Main risk | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat rate | Basic demonstrations | Misrepresents progressive tax | Use only for a genuine flat-rate example |
| Manual rows | Learning and auditing | Repetitive maintenance | Best visual explanation |
Nested IF |
Legacy Excel or one-cell output | Hard to update | Use when compatibility is the priority |
| Lookup table | Reusable, multi-year workbooks | Sorting and table-design errors | Preferred production method |
What the finished workbook can and cannot do
A corrected workbook can provide a transparent estimate of preliminary federal ordinary-income tax from taxable income. It is suitable for education, budgeting, and internal scenario analysis when the tax table is current and the filing status is selected correctly.
It is not a filing-ready return, a complete payroll-withholding engine, or a substitute for official forms, tax software, or professional advice. Keep an update date and official IRS link beside every tax table, and rebuild the table whenever tax law changes.
