The 2013 post correctly anticipated that Bitcoin would become valuable and politically consequential, but its preserved forecast of $1 million per bitcoin by 2023 missed its deadline, and its vision of a world without dollars, central-bank money, or functioning governments did not come to pass. Bitcoin instead gained access to regulated U.S. financial markets.
What did the 2013 post actually predict?
The preserved copy, titled “I am a time traveler begging you to stop what you are doing,” is dated August 30, 2013, and attributed there to Luka Magnotta. It opens: “I am sending this message from the year 2025. Things are looking bleak here, and some of you will carry blood on your hands.” The post presents a fictional warning from a future shaped by Bitcoin, not credible evidence that its author traveled through time. The preserved post lays out this price path:
| Year | Predicted price per bitcoin |
|---|---|
| 2015 | $1,000 |
| 2017 | $5,000 |
| 2020 | $10,000 |
| 2023 | $1,000,000 |
There is a version discrepancy worth noting: a 2024 HackerNoon retrospective gives a different sequence—$1,000 in 2015, $10,000 in 2017, $100,000 in 2019, and $1 million in 2021. The reason for the difference is not established in the available sources. The scorecard below uses the preserved post’s figures rather than blending the two versions. HackerNoon’s retrospective is a secondary account, not a substitute for the archived text.
Did Bitcoin hit the post’s price targets?
Not the defining one: the preserved post’s $1 million target for 2023 was not reached by that deadline. A 2026 annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust records an index-price high of $125,481.71 on October 6, 2025—substantial appreciation, but still far below $1 million. The filing also records an index price of $87,549.06 at December 31, 2025, illustrating that the asset’s value fluctuates rather than moving in a straight line. The SEC-filed annual report provides dated index observations, not a single universal price across all exchanges.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Price histories can differ by source, index, and cutoff. For example, CoinGecko reported an all-time high of $124,128 on August 14, 2025, in a page that said its 2025 figure was accurate as of August 28, 2025. That is a different series and date basis from the SEC filing, so it should not be treated as a contradiction or silently combined with the filing’s observations. CoinGecko’s historical milestone table states its own methodology and cutoff.
Did Bitcoin replace dollars or bring down governments?
No evidence in these dated sources supports the post’s sweeping scenario. It claimed that the dollar would no longer be used, that no central-bank-issued currency would remain, and that anonymous Bitcoin transactions would prevent taxation and lead to government collapse. Those are claims in the story, not outcomes established by the historical record cited here.

A concrete measure of Bitcoin’s institutional trajectory points in a different direction. On January 10, 2024, the SEC approved the listing and trading of certain spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) shares in the United States. SEC Chair Gary Gensler emphasized the limits of that action: “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” The approval showed that Bitcoin had gained access to a regulated financial-market structure; it did not mean Bitcoin had displaced government money or validated a collapse scenario. Gensler’s SEC statement also characterized Bitcoin as speculative and volatile.
Did the predicted “citadel” future happen?
The post’s “citadels” are fortified enclaves for Bitcoin-rich people in a fragmented future. The Bitcoin Annotated treats the post’s compounds and government-collapse setting as fiction and assesses its specific geopolitical predictions as wrong. The citadel image became a memorable cultural thought experiment, but the sources do not establish that it came true as a literal social forecast. The Bitcoin Annotated account is useful as interpretation of the post, not as evidence that its future scenario occurred.

How right was he, claim by claim?
| Claim or prediction | What the record shows | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| $1 million per bitcoin by 2023 | The preserved post set that target; the SEC-filed report recorded an index high of $125,481.71 on October 6, 2025. | Missed the stated target and deadline. |
| Bitcoin would become a valuable asset | Bitcoin reached a six-figure index-price high in 2025, according to the SEC-filed report. | Directionally right, but not a precise forecast of timing or scale. |
| Bitcoin would reshape its relationship with institutions | The SEC approved certain spot Bitcoin ETP listings in January 2024, while explicitly not endorsing Bitcoin. | Bitcoin became integrated into regulated markets rather than replacing them. |
| Dollars and central-bank currencies would disappear; governments would collapse | The sources document regulated-market access, not the predicted disappearance or collapse. | Not borne out by the evidence cited. |
| Fortified “citadels” would define the future | The Bitcoin Annotated describes the scenario as fiction and its geopolitical predictions as wrong. | A cultural thought experiment, not a fulfilled forecast. |
The fairest verdict is that the post anticipated Bitcoin’s significance in broad outline, not its actual path. It missed its most measurable price deadline and imagined institutional and social outcomes at odds with the evidence here: regulated market access, rather than the disappearance of state money or government. The SEC’s 2024 action is evidence of Bitcoin’s financial-market importance, not proof that the post’s warning or future scenario was right. The Bitcoin Annotated likewise frames the post as a fictional prediction whose specific geopolitical claims failed.
