The October account does not establish a precise 2027 percentage, so July’s 3.4% should not be presented as the October forecast. These numbers also reflect different forecast dates and assumptions rather than one directly comparable, settled outcome.

Why the outlook is uneven
The July IMF outlook described technology investment and AI-related demand as helping offset some of the drag from the energy shock. The benefits are not evenly distributed: countries connected to the technology value chain may gain from stronger demand, while energy importers face higher costs. Energy exporters outside the conflict zone may benefit from improved terms of trade. A global average therefore does not describe each economy’s prospects.

Assumptions behind the October outlook
AP reported that the IMF’s outlook assumes oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz resume by March and that AI demand moderates. These are assumptions, not guarantees that energy flows will normalize or that AI demand will follow a particular path. If either premise changes, the growth outlook could change too. The October report excerpt does not provide an exact 2027 growth figure or detailed October scenario estimates.
What could derail the recovery
Renewed conflict and energy disruption
A prolonged or renewed conflict could interrupt energy supplies, push up commodity prices and inflation, tighten financial conditions, and weigh especially heavily on energy-importing economies. A reassessment of AI expectations
If investors reassess the profitability or productivity gains expected from AI, market repricing could weaken investment and activity. In her July 8, 2026 press-conference opening remarks, IMF Economic Counselor Silvana Tenreyro called “A market correction driven by a reassessment of AI profitability” a key downside risk. Financial vulnerability, trade tensions and fragmentation
Financial repricing can compound vulnerability where public finances are already strained and financial conditions are tight. The IMF’s April report also identified trade tensions and geopolitical fragmentation as downside risks. Those risks were listed in April and should not be mistaken for a confirmed ranking in the October account.
