IMF Finds Demand for Tokenized Stocks, but Warns the Market Remains Volatile and Illiquid

Tokenized U.S. stocks appear to serve after-hours and fractional-trading demand, but reported IMF findings point to thinner liquidity, higher volatility and unresolved questions about ownership and safeguards.

Tokenized U.S. stocks are attracting after-hours trading and small, fractional-sized orders, and overnight token prices appear to carry information into the conventional market. But findings attributed to an IMF study also point to substantially higher volatility and lower liquidity. Those are signs of demand and price discovery—not proof that a token gives its holder the same rights as a share or can always be traded at a fair price.

What the IMF study reportedly found

CoinDesk reported on October 11, 2026, that an IMF study examined five of the most actively traded tokenized U.S. equities, including Tesla, Nvidia and Alphabet, as well as measures such as the Nasdaq 100, across centralized and decentralized venues. The figures below are findings attributed to the IMF by CoinDesk, not figures independently verified against the chapter text.

Reported finding What it indicates
More than half of tokenized-stock trading took place outside regular U.S. market hours. There is observable activity when conventional U.S. markets are closed.
About 80% of trades were for less than one share. Small, fractional-sized trades are a prominent use case.
More than 85% of overnight movement in tokenized shares was reflected in conventional counterparts within five minutes after U.S. markets opened. Overnight token prices appear to contain information that carries into the regular market.
Tokenized stocks were about 1.5 times as volatile as equivalent shares on traditional venues. The reported price movements were more pronounced, not simply a smoother extension of conventional trading.
Tokenized stocks had significantly lower liquidity than their traditional counterparts. Trading activity does not, by itself, establish that investors can buy or sell readily at predictable prices.

The report account does not give the sample period, venue-by-venue data, the exact liquidity measure or the statistical method. The results concern a small, actively traded sample; they should not be treated as representative of every tokenized security or trading venue.

After-hours access and fractional trades meet specific needs

Conventional U.S. stock trading follows market hours, while tokenized products can trade outside them. More than half of the trading in the study’s reported sample occurred outside regular U.S. hours, suggesting that some participants value access when the underlying share market is shut. That activity may make tokens useful for expressing a view or adjusting exposure overnight, but it does not guarantee a continuous market or a reliable price at every moment.

The finding that about four in five trades were smaller than one share points to fractional sizing as another practical attraction. A person can trade a smaller amount of exposure than a whole-share purchase would require. That describes the size of the trade, however—not the legal nature of what the buyer owns. The rights attached to a token depend on the specific product’s legal structure and terms.

Price discovery is not the same as ownership or fair value

The reported finding that more than 85% of overnight token-price movement appeared in conventional share prices within five minutes of the U.S. market open is evidence consistent with price discovery: trading in one market seems to reflect information that is later visible in another. It does not establish that token trading causes the conventional price change, that every token is fully backed, or that a token holder has the same legal claim as a conventional shareholder.

Those questions require looking at the particular product’s documentation. A token’s relationship to a company’s share, including any rights, backing arrangements and claim on an issuer or intermediary, cannot be inferred from a price chart or from the fact that the price tracks the share. Nor does an overnight price guarantee that a buyer or seller can transact near that price when liquidity is thin.

Why volatility and low liquidity matter together

The study’s reported estimate of about 1.5 times the volatility of equivalent traditional shares matters especially when paired with significantly lower liquidity. A price can move sharply in a market where relatively little trading is available to absorb orders. In that setting, a quoted price may not tell an investor what a larger order would actually receive, and a rapid move can be harder to exit than it appears.

Market-size estimates also put the findings in context, though their definitions are not necessarily comparable. CoinDesk attributed to the IMF an estimate of about $65 billion for the tokenized real-world-asset market as of July 31, 2026, including roughly $2.3 billion in tokenized equities. The same account compared the equity estimate with global equity capitalization of just under $160 trillion, attributed to SIFMA for 2025. These are estimates from different measures and dates, so the figures indicate scale rather than a precise like-for-like market share.

Automation may reduce frictions while speeding stress

Tokenization could make some routine processes more efficient. CoinDesk’s account describes potential reductions in manual reconciliation, automated dividend payments and faster collateral transfers. These are possible operational benefits, not proof that every tokenized product currently delivers them or that they outweigh its trading and legal risks.

The same automation and continuous operation can also transmit stress quickly. Automatic margin calls or liquidations may force sales during a price decline; collateral moving across platforms can create links between venues; and trading outside conventional hours can leave participants managing a shock when the underlying market is closed. CoinDesk characterized systemic risks as limited while tokenized markets remain small, while reporting that the IMF wants safeguards developed before the market grows.

What safeguards and policy questions are in view

Aju Press reported on an IMF–Bank of Korea presentation on October 8, 2026, identifying legal uncertainty, regulatory ambiguity, weak interoperability and a lack of secure payment methods as obstacles. Its English-language article says it was AI-translated, so its wording should not be treated as a verified transcript. The account says the IMF recommended central-bank money for settling systemically important securities and called for monitoring and stress testing intraday and after-hours liquidity, including review of circuit breakers.

These concerns are broader than whether a token’s price follows a share. Clear ownership and regulatory treatment affect who has enforceable rights; interoperability affects whether assets and obligations can move reliably between systems; and the settlement asset affects what ultimately discharges a payment obligation. Earlier IMF analysis in “Tokenization and Financial Market Inefficiencies” (2025) provides conceptual context: tokenization may reduce issuance, servicing, redemption and trading frictions, while also encouraging leverage, reducing liquidity buffers, increasing interconnectedness and concentrating infrastructure through network effects. That framework is not direct empirical confirmation of the 2026 stock-market findings.

What a reader should check about a specific token

The reported market-wide results cannot answer product-level questions. Before treating any token as equivalent to a conventional share, examine its terms and the arrangements behind it:

  • Legal claim: Identify what the token represents and what enforceable rights, if any, the holder has. Do not assume it confers voting, dividend or ownership rights simply because it tracks a company’s share price.
  • Backing and custody: Check what supports the token, who holds the underlying asset if one exists, and what the documentation says happens if an issuer or intermediary fails.
  • Trading and redemption: Review where it can be traded, whether there is a redemption process, and what fees, restrictions or delays apply. A displayed price is not a promise of execution at that price.
  • Settlement and access: Understand what asset is used to settle trades, the applicable trading hours, and what happens if a venue or related service is unavailable.
  • Investor protections: Check the governing jurisdiction and the product’s disclosures rather than inferring protections from the underlying company’s listing.

Publication timing and limits of the evidence

The relevant work is Chapter 3, “Scaling Tokenization: New Efficiencies, New Vulnerabilities,” in the IMF’s October 2026 Global Financial Stability Report. The IMF catalog lists the report’s publication date as October 12, 2026—one day after CoinDesk’s October 11 account. As of October 11, the full chapter and its methods were not available for direct checking here, so the quantitative findings in this article remain attributed to CoinDesk’s report of the IMF study.
