IKEA Australia chief executive Mirja Viinanen described further opportunities in Perth and regional Western Australia, but named no next location or timetable.
What opened in Cannington
The 544-square-metre Cannington site was IKEA’s first Plan and order point in Western Australia. PerthNow described it as the retailer’s 13th Australian location at the time. Unlike a large IKEA store, it focused on assisted planning for kitchens, wardrobes and living-room storage rather than a full-scale shopping experience. PerthNow reported on the opening and Viinanen’s comments on 14 February 2024.
The company said the new location responded to requests from customers south of the river for easier access to IKEA services. In its 13 February 2024 opening announcement, IKEA described a service built around planning and ordering, with a pick-up point and selected accessories available to buy on site.
What customers could do there
The Plan and order point was intended for customers who wanted help shaping a project and placing an order, not the same breadth of browsing and shopping as a full-size store. IKEA’s opening announcement described these options:

- Collect: Arrange order collection at the on-site pick-up point.
- Buy selected items: The opening release said up to 100 products were displayed for immediate purchase. That was an opening-day detail, not a promise about current stock.
These services address different needs: planning is advice, collection is for an order already placed, and delivery, installation or assembly are fulfilment options. Current services, stock and opening hours should be checked with IKEA’s Perth location information.
What IKEA’s WA growth comments meant
Before the opening, Viinanen said IKEA was keen to understand what it could do in Perth and how it could grow. She pointed to the existing north-of-the-river store, the Cannington trial in the south, and opportunities beyond Perth through remote and online selling. Those remarks described areas of interest, not a confirmed store project: she did not identify another location or opening date.

The distinction matters. The Cannington opening was a specific, dated expansion of access to IKEA’s planning and ordering services. The wider statement about WA was an outlook, with no quantified sales, demand, investment or market-size figure attached to it.

IKEA Australia’s reconciliation plan for August 2025 to August 2027 lists Cannington as a WA Plan and order point. For that plan’s reporting period, it reports a national network of 10 stores, three Plan and order points and six external pick-up points. These are figures in a dated corporate plan, not a live count for October 2026; the document confirms Cannington’s place in the listed network but does not announce a newer WA expansion.
