It involved reply-chain phishing aimed at Inter IKEA mailboxes, but the available reporting does not establish that the campaign continues today or confirm its full impact. IKEA said at the time that it had taken steps to prevent damage and had no indication customer data was compromised.
Was the IKEA email attack real?
Yes. On November 26, 2021, BleepingComputer reported an internal warning that an email campaign was targeting Inter IKEA mailboxes. The warning said other IKEA organizations, suppliers, and business partners had also been compromised and were spreading malicious emails into Inter IKEA. BleepingComputer’s report described the campaign as ongoing at that time; that wording is not evidence of an active attack in 2026.
The report does not establish how attackers first gained access to the accounts or systems involved, how many accounts were affected, or the final extent of any compromise.
How did the reply-chain phishing work?
Reply-chain phishing abuses the credibility of a real email conversation. A malicious message appears as a reply in an existing thread, so it can look like a routine response from a colleague, supplier, or other known contact. In this incident, the internal warning said messages could come from work contacts or outside organizations whose accounts or infrastructure had been compromised.

BleepingComputer’s technical account said links redirected recipients to a ZIP file containing a malicious Excel document. Opening the document and selecting “Enable Content” or “Enable Editing” would run macros that downloaded renamed DLL payload files. The outlet identified Qbot, also known as QakBot, as malware seen in campaigns using this method. It described Emotet as a possibility based on a VirusTotal submission, not as a confirmed IKEA-wide infection. These details do not prove that either malware infected IKEA’s broader network or that ransomware was deployed.
What were IKEA employees told to do?
The warning emphasized caution even when a message appeared to come from someone familiar. It flagged links with seven digits at the end and instructed employees to report suspicious email to IT rather than open it. Employees were also asked to notify the apparent sender through Microsoft Teams, using a separate channel to check whether the message was genuine. BleepingComputer reported the warning’s guidance.

Computing reported that IKEA IT disabled employees’ ability to release quarantined messages themselves. The rationale was that a malicious message embedded in a genuine conversation might be mistaken for a false positive and released. Computing’s coverage also reported the organization’s internal response guidance.
Was IKEA hacked, and was customer data compromised?
The reporting supports saying that a phishing campaign targeted parts of the IKEA organization and that the internal warning described other organizations and partners as compromised. It does not establish that IKEA’s internal servers were compromised. BleepingComputer explicitly noted that IKEA had not disclosed whether internal servers had been breached.

Computing quoted an IKEA spokesperson saying: “We have no indication that customer data has been compromised.” The spokesperson also said IKEA had taken action to prevent damage and was conducting a full-scale investigation. This was IKEA’s assessment during the investigation in 2021—not an independently verified final finding that no customer data was affected. The contemporaneous statement is reported by Computing.

- The full scope of affected accounts, organizations, suppliers, and business partners.
- The initial access route used against the accounts or infrastructure involved.
- Whether Qbot/QakBot or Emotet infected IKEA’s wider network, and whether ransomware was deployed.
- The final forensic outcome and whether any customer information was ultimately affected.
The incident reporting cited here does not provide a later final forensic disclosure resolving those questions. Inter IKEA’s business-partner privacy statement describes security practices such as cybersecurity risk management, data-loss prevention, security assessments, and access management; it is organizational context, not confirmation of the 2021 incident’s technical details.
