Scroll reported substantial differences between figures in the institute’s NIRF submissions and annual reports, and reported an employee’s allegation that NIRF figures were inflated. Those reports raise legitimate questions about reporting categories and verification, but the available sources do not establish that intentional falsification was independently proven.
What NIRF ranked IIM Mumbai
The official NIRF tables list IIM Mumbai at rank 6 in Management in both years. Its overall score rose from 74.73 in 2024 to 77.58 in 2025. The tables also show scores across five parameters:
| Year | Rank | Overall score | TLR | RPC | GO | OI | Perception |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 6 | 74.73 | 80.81 | 59.14 | 99.41 | 75.86 | 52.82 |
| 2025 | 6 | 77.58 | 85.20 | 60.18 | 99.84 | 78.00 | 62.03 |
These are the official outcomes, not an independent audit of every submission used to calculate them. The NIRF 2024 Management table and NIRF 2025 Management table confirm the ranks and scores.
What the reported discrepancies concern
Scroll reported in 2024 that an employee wrote to the institute’s board, the Ministry of Education and the Comptroller and Auditor General, alleging that figures submitted to NIRF had been inflated. Scroll said it compared original NIRF documents with institutional annual reports and found significant discrepancies.
#1 Best Overall
For 2019–2023, Scroll reported approximately ₹135 crore in income across three NIRF categories—consultancy projects, sponsored research, and executive and management development programmes—compared with just over ₹10 crore under the annual reports’ “Other income” heading. It also reported approximately ₹478 crore in NIRF-reported expenditure against approximately ₹380 crore in expenditure in the financial statements. These are figures from Scroll’s comparison, not findings of an independent adjudication.
The income comparison depends on how the categories map. Scroll treated the three NIRF categories as corresponding to the annual reports’ “Other income” heading. A category reported to NIRF may not necessarily map one-to-one to a financial-statement heading; assessing the difference requires checking the definitions, accounting years, and reporting scope on both sides. A mismatch warrants scrutiny, but does not by itself establish that the figures are false or that anyone intended to mislead.
How the data could affect a ranking
NIRF’s framework uses five broad groups: Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception. Its parameters page lists student strength, faculty-student ratio, faculty qualifications and experience, and financial resources and their utilisation among TLR measures. Faculty and some financial submissions can therefore matter to a score.
Rank #2
That context does not show that any particular IIM Mumbai submission was false, nor does it show that one disputed category accounts for the institution’s overall rank. A fair comparison considers the year-specific total and parameter scores alongside the exact inputs at issue; rank alone cannot verify the underlying data.
What NIRF and IIM Mumbai have said
In Scroll’s account of the 2024 report, an unnamed NIRF representative said the framework uses institution-reported data and can seek clarification and edit data if necessary. Because the representative was not named, this should not be treated as a named official’s assurance that the disputed figures were resolved.
Rank #3
A later Scroll report discussed the reliability of NIRF data more broadly and reported IIM Mumbai’s position that IIMs follow a uniform reporting format issued by the Ministry of Education in consultation with the CAG. That is the institute’s reported position, not an independent resolution of the discrepancies raised earlier. The reports do not establish the outcome of an independent determination of whether the submissions were deliberately falsified.

- Verified: NIRF’s 2024 and 2025 Management tables both rank IIM Mumbai sixth.
- Reported: Scroll described differences between certain NIRF submissions and annual-report figures and reported an employee’s allegation of inflation.
- Not established by the sources available here: that IIM Mumbai intentionally falsified its submissions, or that an independent body reached a final finding on intent.
The IIM Mumbai NIRF documents page lists materials for multiple years and a 2026 notification. The latest rank confirmed by the official ranking tables cited here is for 2025; the notification alone does not establish a 2026 rank.
