A $1,000 investment in Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) made at the October 7, 2011 close would have grown to about $11,864 by the October 7, 2026 close. That is a price-only result on split-adjusted prices, equal to a gain of roughly 1,086%. October 7, 2026 is the most recent settled close available when this article was written. The October 8 figure seen during that session was an intraday price, so it is not used here.
How the $11,864 figure is calculated
The estimate divides your investment by the starting price to find how many shares it bought, then multiplies those shares by the ending price. Both prices are split-adjusted, so they are directly comparable.
| Item | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Starting date | October 7, 2011 | Last trading day on or before the 15-year anniversary of the end date |
| Split-adjusted close, starting date | $26.55 | FinanceCharts historical data |
| Ending date | October 7, 2026 | Latest settled close available at writing |
| Split-adjusted close, ending date | $315.00 | StockAnalysis historical data |
| Price multiple | 11.86x | $315.00 ÷ $26.55 |
| Shares bought with $1,000 | About 37.665 | $1,000 ÷ $26.55, fractional shares allowed |
| Value on October 7, 2026 | About $11,864 | 37.665 × $315.00 |
| Price-only gain | About 1,086% | ($11,864 − $1,000) ÷ $1,000 |
Whole-share purchases, brokerage commissions and the timing of your actual trade would shift the result somewhat. Treat $11,864 as a rounded estimate rather than an exact account balance.
Why the 2021 stock split matters
Sherwin-Williams completed a three-for-one stock split effective March 31, 2021. Its 2021 annual report states that all prior-year share and per-share information was retroactively adjusted for that split. The 2011 price in the calculation has been adjusted the same way, which is why it is $26.55 rather than the nominal quote that traded before the split.

#1 Best Overall
Mixing the two conventions produces a wrong answer by a factor of three. Using an unadjusted 2011 quote against a 2026 price would make the stock look about three times better than it was, and the reverse mistake would understate it. The split itself creates no value: it changes the share count and the per-share price in proportion.
What the estimate leaves out
- Dividends. Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 annual report says a dividend reinvestment program is available to common shareholders. Reinvested dividends would increase the ending value, and the size of that effect depends on the dividend rate over the period and the price at which each payment was reinvested. The $11,864 figure does not include any of it.
- A dividend-inclusive ending value. Calculating that requires a dividend-adjusted price series for both dates. A matched pair for October 7, 2011 and October 7, 2026 was not available from the sources used for this article, so no reinvested total is stated here.
- Fees and commissions. Trading costs and any account fees reduce the result. They vary by broker and account.
- Taxes. Gains and dividends in a taxable brokerage account can be taxed when realized or received. Tax-advantaged accounts follow different rules. Check the rules that apply to your situation.
- Purchase timing. The calculation assumes a purchase on October 7, 2011. Buying on a different day in 2011 would produce a different answer, sometimes by a wide margin, because the stock’s price moves daily.
Current price and date caveats
Stock prices change every trading session, so the ending value of any real position will differ from the October 7, 2026 figure once the market moves. The October 8, 2026 price of $320.67 was reported during the trading session, not as a settled close, and it would have raised the estimate by about 1.7% (roughly $200) if it had closed there. To update the figure yourself, multiply your share count by the most recent settled close.

How to run the same calculation for another date or amount
- Find the split-adjusted closing price for your start date in a historical price table. For a price-only result, use the close column. For a result that includes dividends, use the adjusted close column; Yahoo Finance describes adjusted close as reflecting stock splits and dividend and capital-gain distributions.
- Divide your investment amount by the starting price to get the number of shares, including fractional shares.
- Multiply the share count by the ending price, using the same price convention as the start.
- Subtract your original investment to get the gain, then divide by the original amount to get the percentage.
- If you compare against an index or another stock, use the same dates and the same convention on both sides: price return against price return, or total return against total return.
About the company
Sherwin-Williams describes itself as a global leader in the manufacture, development, distribution and sale of paints, coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers. Its common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SHW. That context describes the business but does not explain why the stock rose over these 15 years.

On a price-only, split-adjusted basis, $1,000 invested at the October 7, 2011 close would have been worth about $11,864 at the October 7, 2026 close. Dividends, fees and taxes would change the result, and they are not included in that figure. Past performance does not predict future returns, and this article is a historical calculation, not a recommendation to buy or hold Sherwin-Williams stock.
