If a Bear Market Is Coming in 2027, Here’s the One Move to Make Now

A 2027 bear market is not established by the available Fed projections or stress scenarios. Review your allocation and rebalance only if it no longer fits your goals, time horizon, and risk capacity.

No reliable evidence establishes that a bear market is coming in 2027. The most useful move right now is not to make a blanket switch to cash; it is to review your portfolio and rebalance, if needed, so its mix of stocks, bonds, and cash still fits your goals, time horizon, and ability to handle losses.

Is a bear market coming in 2027?

None of the cited official figures proves that a 2027 bear market is ahead. The Federal Reserve’s 2026 bank stress test includes a severe hypothetical recession, but the Fed explicitly says the scenario “does not represent a forecast of the Federal Reserve.” It is designed to assess whether banks could withstand adverse conditions—not to predict what markets will do.

In that scenario, equity prices fall about 58 percent over the first three quarters, while U.S. unemployment reaches a modeled peak of 10 percent in the third quarter of 2027. Those figures describe the stress scenario, not expected outcomes. Treating its 2027 date as a market-timing signal would mistake a resilience test for a forecast. The Fed’s March 2026 Summary of Economic Projections gives a different kind of information: participants’ median projections for 2027 were 2.3 percent real GDP growth, 4.3 percent unemployment, and 2.2 percent PCE inflation. These are conditional economic projections based on information and policy assumptions available at the meeting. They are not guarantees and do not directly predict stock-market returns. The move to make now: check your allocation, then rebalance if it has drifted

A portfolio review is more useful than a bet on a calendar-year forecast. Check whether your current mix reflects what the money is for, when you expect to need it, and how much loss you could financially and emotionally withstand. If market movements have pushed your holdings away from the mix you chose, rebalancing can bring them back toward that target.

The SEC identifies stocks, bonds, and cash as common asset categories and says an appropriate mix depends on financial goals. Stocks have historically carried greater risk and potential return; bonds are generally less volatile and have more modest returns; cash is relatively low risk but can lose purchasing power to inflation. Diversification means spreading investments across holdings that may respond differently to market conditions. It can help manage risk, but it cannot prevent losses when markets fall. A practical review

  1. Write down the purpose and time horizon for each account. Money needed soon has a different job from retirement savings intended to remain invested for years.
  2. Compare your current holdings with your intended mix. Look across stocks, bonds, and cash, including concentration in a single company, sector, or asset type.
  3. Decide whether a change follows your plan or a prediction. If your allocation still suits your goals and risk capacity, anxiety about a possible downturn alone is not proof it should change. If it has drifted or no longer fits, consider rebalancing toward a deliberate target rather than making an all-or-nothing move.
  4. Check the costs before trading. Consider potential taxes and transaction costs; the right treatment depends on your account and circumstances. The cited sources do not establish what those costs would be for an individual investor.

Should you move investments to cash?

Cash can be appropriate for day-to-day expenses, emergency savings, or money that must remain readily available. It is not automatically a safer long-term replacement for stocks or bonds: inflation can erode its purchasing power, and its yield can fall if central banks reduce rates. Vanguard describes cash as a liquidity tool and cautions against treating it as a universal substitute for other investments. Vanguard, What Is Cash Investing?

Selling investments to avoid a downturn also creates a timing problem: you must decide both when to get out and when to get back in. A shift made from fear can leave you with a portfolio that no longer matches your long-term plan, while a later recovery may occur before you feel comfortable returning. That does not mean cash is never appropriate; it means the reason for holding it should be liquidity or a deliberate allocation choice, not an unverified prediction.

Why long-term forecasts are not crash timers

Vanguard’s capital-market model run dated June 30, 2026 presents hypothetical 10- and 30-year return and volatility distributions for asset classes. Vanguard says its assumptions depend on market conditions and can change; valuations are poor predictors over short or intermediate horizons and should not be the primary reason to alter an allocation. The modeled ranges are not guarantees or individualized advice. Vanguard, Capital Markets Model and Market Perspectives

Long-range projections can inform expectations about risk and return, but they do not tell an investor whether to sell this week or whether a bear market will begin in 2027. For that reason, a durable portfolio decision should rest on the investor’s objectives and capacity for risk, not an attempt to extract a precise near-term signal from a long-horizon model.

Choose the response that fits your situation

Option May fit when Main trade-off
Keep the current allocation Your mix remains appropriate for your goals, time horizon, liquidity needs, and tolerance for loss. You remain exposed to the portfolio’s existing market risk; a downturn could still reduce its value.
Rebalance toward a planned mix Market movements have shifted your holdings away from a target that still fits your circumstances. Trading can have tax consequences or transaction costs; rebalancing does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Hold more cash for liquidity You need accessible money for near-term spending or emergencies, or have a deliberate low-risk allocation. Inflation can reduce purchasing power, and cash yields may decline as rates change; keeping too much can also leave less invested for long-term goals.
Change the stock-and-bond mix Your current level of market risk no longer fits your time horizon or ability to absorb losses. Bonds and stocks have different risks; changing the mix is not a dependable way to predict or avoid a specific market decline.

Before acting, weigh your time horizon, need for liquid funds, capacity to absorb losses, diversification, inflation and interest-rate exposure, and possible taxes and trading costs. If you cannot tell whether a proposed change improves your plan or merely reacts to a frightening headline, a qualified financial professional can help assess the decision in light of your full circumstances.
