Cyber intelligence firm iCOUNTER announced its public launch on July 16, 2025, alongside a $30 million Series A led by SYN Ventures. The company, announced by Apollo Information Systems and described by SecurityWeek as spun out of Apollo, says its focus is organization-specific risk intelligence rather than threat reporting built mainly around activity already observed elsewhere.
What iCOUNTER announced
Apollo Information Systems announced iCOUNTER’s public launch on July 16, 2025. At launch, iCOUNTER named John Watters as CEO and Managing Partner and said it had raised a $30 million Series A led by SYN Ventures. SecurityWeek also reported the launch, funding round, and Apollo relationship. iCOUNTER’s launch announcement and SecurityWeek’s coverage describe the event.
The $30 million is a funding amount, not a reported valuation, revenue figure, or measure of the product’s effectiveness.
What iCOUNTER says its intelligence is designed to do
iCOUNTER’s stated premise is that an organization can be targeted in ways not reflected in broad threat reporting or previously observed attacks. It positions its intelligence around a specific customer and that customer’s ecosystem, including exposure involving vendors and other connected organizations. The intended distinction is the focus of the intelligence: organization-specific risk, rather than only general or sector-level threat information. The company’s launch materials describe this positioning.
#1 Best Overall
John Watters, CEO and Managing Partner, summarized the thesis in the launch release: “Traditional threat intelligence is designed to report on threats that have been seen before in an age where an increasing number of targets will be Patient Zero.” This is Watters’s argument for the company’s approach, not an independently established finding about how frequently organizations face previously unseen threats. In this context, “Patient Zero” means a target encountering a threat that has not previously been seen against it.
How CTOS fits into the company’s offering
iCOUNTER’s current site describes CTOS, or Counter Threat Operating System, as a system that applies live enterprise context to operational risk and routes validated intelligence into workflows such as vendor escalations, remediation, and counter-threat execution. The company says CTOS reached general availability in March 2026. These are iCOUNTER’s product descriptions and milestone; they do not establish independently measured results. iCOUNTER’s product and About pages provide the current description.

Who leads iCOUNTER and who funded it
- John Watters: Named CEO and Managing Partner at launch. iCOUNTER’s About page describes his previous cyber-intelligence leadership at iDEFENSE and iSIGHT Partners, followed by service as Mandiant president and COO before Google acquired Mandiant in 2022. iCOUNTER’s About page.
- SYN Ventures: Led the announced Series A, according to iCOUNTER and SecurityWeek.
- Apollo Information Systems: Announced iCOUNTER’s launch; SecurityWeek described the company as spun out of Apollo.
What the announcement does—and does not—show
The launch announcement said iCOUNTER had provided actionable intelligence to U.S. customers since 2020, but the materials cited do not give a customer count or independently verifiable outcome data. They also do not report pricing, contract value, market share, or an independently audited product-performance statistic. The funding and the company’s claims about its approach therefore show what iCOUNTER is building and how it is financed, not whether it prevents attacks or outperforms other intelligence providers. The launch announcement and SecurityWeek’s report establish the announcement details; neither supplies an independent efficacy measure.
For buyers, the relevant questions are whether intelligence is tailored to their organization and suppliers, whether it reaches the teams and systems responsible for response, and whether a provider can demonstrate outcomes under a clearly defined evaluation. The launch coverage does not provide a like-for-like comparison with competitors, so it cannot support a vendor ranking.
