Icelandair said air traffic controller strikes disrupted its schedule on two days during the week of December 15, 2023, affecting 13,000 passengers. The airline estimated that the labor actions could cost it $5 million to $7 million if the dispute was not resolved soon; that was a conditional estimate, not a confirmed final loss.
What Icelandair reported about the 2023 ATC strikes
In a statement dated December 15, 2023, Icelandair said air traffic controller labor actions on two days that week had caused significant disruption to its flight schedule. Further strikes were planned for the following week at the time of the statement. The airline said 13,000 passengers had been affected that week and forecast that a further 23,000 could be affected the next week if the planned strikes went ahead. The second figure was a projection, not a final passenger count. Icelandair’s December 15, 2023 statement
Did Icelandair ultimately lose $7 million?
The airline estimated a total cost of $5 million to $7 million if the labor dispute was not resolved soon. That figure described a possible cost at the time, not an audited result or a confirmed amount ultimately paid or lost. Icelandair also said it would seek compensation from Isavia for the financial effects. The available reporting does not establish whether it recovered any money.
A separate Icelandair strike in September 2026
A later disruption on September 23, 2026, involved aircraft mechanics, not air traffic controllers. RÚV reported that the mechanics’ strike led to the cancellation of 26 international and five domestic flights and affected almost 5,500 passengers. Icelandair said the strike had been called off and expected its schedule to normalize later that day. Those figures concern a separate event and should not be attributed to the 2023 ATC actions. What to do if Icelandair disrupts your flight
- Check the airline’s current instructions. Use Icelandair’s flight-cancellation guidance for information about rerouting, reimbursement, and possible care such as meals, refreshments, accommodation, transport to lodging, and communication access.
- Keep records. Save the booking confirmation, cancellation or delay notices, receipts for necessary expenses, and any messages about rebooking. These can help when asking the airline to address your specific case.
- Check the route and operating carrier before assessing rights. Icelandair describes EU Regulation 261/2004 in relation to journeys to the EU, Norway, Switzerland, or Iceland when flying with an airline based in one of those places. The rules should not be assumed to apply to every itinerary.
- Consult Icelandic regulator guidance if the disruption involved a strike. The Icelandic Transport Authority’s passenger-rights guidance describes information and services such as meals, accommodation when needed, and transport to lodging. It distinguishes third-party strikes, including ATC actions, from strikes by an airline’s own staff when discussing force majeure.
Assistance is different from cash compensation
Strike-related disruption does not by itself settle whether a passenger qualifies for monetary compensation. The answer depends on factors including the route, operating carrier, cause, and circumstances of the cancellation or delay. The airline and regulator guidance describe assistance and claims processes, but neither the 2023 headline figure nor the existence of a strike determines an individual passenger’s eligibility.
Icelandair’s CEO, Bogi Nils Bogason, said in the 2023 statement: “Iceland is particularly vulnerable to such labor actions as an island nation that depends solely on flight connections for travel to and from the country.” This was the airline’s explanation of the disruption’s significance, not an independent assessment of passenger claims.
