Short answer: IC Markets is usually the stronger fit for cost-focused forex traders who want raw spreads, high-speed execution and a large selection of automated-trading tools. Pepperstone is the more balanced choice for traders who want a polished broker experience, strong platform support and a straightforward account setup.
Neither broker is universally better. Your decision depends on where you live, which legal entity accepts your account, whether you trade manually or use an Expert Advisor, and how much you trade. Fees, leverage, investor protections and available instruments can change by country.

Regulation and account protection
Regulation should come before spread comparisons. IC Markets and Pepperstone operate through different companies in different jurisdictions. A brand’s global list of regulators does not mean that every customer receives the same protections.

Check the name of the contracting company in the application and account agreement. That entity determines matters such as:
- the maximum leverage available to retail clients;
- whether negative-balance protection applies;
- the availability of compensation or investor-protection schemes;
- the treatment of client money;
- the broker’s dispute-resolution process; and
- which products and account types you can access.
Both brokers are generally associated with well-known financial regulators, including regulators in Australia, the United Kingdom, Cyprus and other jurisdictions. That does not make the two offers identical. A client onboarded through an offshore entity may receive materially different terms from a client onboarded through a stricter local entity.
Neither broker should be assumed to accept US retail customers for leveraged forex or CFD trading. US readers should verify availability directly with the broker and with the relevant regulator rather than relying on a comparison website.
Trading costs: IC Markets or Pepperstone?
Raw pricing
Both brokers offer a spread-plus-commission model designed for active traders. On a typical raw-spread forex account, the spread may be close to the underlying market spread, while the broker charges a commission when the trade opens and closes.
A commission of US$3.50 per standard lot per side works out to roughly US$7 for a complete one-lot round trip, before the spread and any other costs. For a 0.10-lot position, the equivalent commission is approximately US$0.70 round trip.
IC Markets has long appealed to traders comparing raw spreads and execution costs. Pepperstone’s Razor account is also designed for the same audience. In practice, the difference between them can be small. The cheaper broker on paper may not be cheaper for your strategy if it has wider spreads during the hours you trade, higher conversion costs or different swap charges.
Standard pricing
Standard accounts generally remove the separate forex commission and add the broker’s markup to the spread. This is simpler for occasional traders because the cost appears in the quoted spread, but it is not automatically cheaper.
For a trader who opens and closes positions frequently, a raw account is often easier to compare. For someone placing only a few trades a month, the convenience of a standard account may matter more than a fraction of a pip.

Other costs that can change the result
Do not compare only the advertised minimum EUR/USD spread. Also check:
- Overnight financing: positions held after the daily cutoff may incur swap or financing charges.
- Currency conversion: converting profits, deposits or commissions into your account currency can add a cost.
- Index and commodity spreads: forex pricing does not tell you what trading gold, oil or indices will cost.
- Share-CFD commissions: share products commonly use separate commissions and minimum charges.
- Deposit and withdrawal costs: payment providers and intermediary banks may charge fees even when the broker does not.
- Slippage: the requested price is not guaranteed during fast markets.
For a useful comparison, record the all-in cost of the same trade at both brokers: entry spread, commission, exit spread, financing and conversion. “Spreads from zero” is a minimum marketing figure, not a continuous trading cost.
Which broker has better platforms?
Platform choice is one of the clearest differences between the brokers, although availability depends on your location.
IC Markets
IC Markets is commonly chosen by traders using MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 or cTrader. That makes it suitable for:
- Expert Advisors and automated strategies;
- custom indicators;
- back-testing and optimisation;
- forex scalping; and
- traders who want access to third-party tools built for MetaTrader or cTrader.
Its platform offering has traditionally been especially attractive to algorithmic traders. However, check whether the specific account type supports your chosen platform. The commission schedule may differ between MetaTrader and cTrader accounts.
Pepperstone
Pepperstone generally offers MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView, with a proprietary trading interface available in some markets. This gives discretionary traders more choice over charting and order-entry workflows.
TradingView may be preferable if you already analyse markets there and want to place broker orders from the same charting environment. MetaTrader remains the practical choice for many Expert Advisors, while cTrader is popular with traders who prefer its interface and cAlgo-based automation tools.
Platform winner: Pepperstone has the broader mainstream choice if its full lineup is available in your jurisdiction. IC Markets may be the better fit if your priority is a familiar MetaTrader or cTrader environment and low-cost automated forex trading.

Markets and instruments
Both brokers offer forex and CFDs, with availability varying by region. Typical markets include currency pairs, indices, commodities, metals, cryptocurrencies and share CFDs. The exact list matters more than the headline number.
Ask these questions before applying:
- Are the specific currency pairs or shares you want available?
- Can you trade them on your preferred platform?
- Are cryptocurrency products available to retail clients in your country?
- What are the contract sizes and minimum trade sizes?
- Are the products cash CFDs, futures-based CFDs or another structure?
- What are the trading hours and overnight financing rates?
IC Markets is often viewed as particularly forex-focused, while Pepperstone offers a broad CFD range and a strong platform-based experience. That distinction can disappear or reverse depending on the entity serving you, so compare the actual product list rather than global marketing pages.
Leverage and risk
Leverage is not a quality score. It magnifies both gains and losses and can cause a position to be liquidated after a relatively small market move.
Retail leverage is often capped by the regulator governing your account. Professional clients may qualify for higher leverage but can lose some retail protections. Offshore entities may advertise higher ratios, but the trade-off may include weaker regulatory safeguards.
For example, at 30:1 leverage, a US$10,000 position requires roughly US$333.33 of margin before considering spread, price movement and broker-specific margin rules. That margin is not the maximum amount you can lose. A leveraged position can lose substantially more than its initial margin unless a protective mechanism applies.
Choose the broker based on execution, cost and legal protections—not the highest leverage number on a banner.
Deposits, withdrawals and account usability
Both brokers normally support common funding methods such as bank transfer and cards, with additional methods depending on location. The important checks are practical:
- Does the payment method accept your country and currency?
- Is the funding account in the same name as the trading account?
- How long do withdrawals take after approval?
- Are card deposits returned to the card before profits can be sent elsewhere?
- Will your bank or payment provider charge a separate fee?
Most regulated brokers apply anti-money-laundering rules that restrict third-party deposits and withdrawals. A withdrawal can therefore be delayed if you fund the account from someone else’s card or bank account.

Pepperstone is generally regarded as having a polished onboarding and client-area experience. IC Markets is also straightforward for experienced traders, but the most important usability test is whether the funding methods and base currencies available to you match your needs.

Which broker is better for you?
| If you are… | Likely better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A forex scalper comparing raw costs | IC Markets, narrowly | Its raw-spread and execution-oriented positioning may suit high turnover, but verify live all-in costs. |
| Using Expert Advisors | Either | Both support major automation platforms. Compare hosting, execution and platform-specific commissions. |
| A TradingView user | Pepperstone, if available | Its platform lineup is particularly convenient for chart-led discretionary trading. |
| A beginner placing occasional trades | Pepperstone | The broader, more polished platform choice may reduce friction, though a demo account cannot guarantee live execution. |
| Trading shares and several CFD categories | Compare locally | Available symbols, commissions and financing are entity-specific. |
| Concerned about inactivity fees | Check the current fee schedule | Policies can change and may differ by jurisdiction; do not rely on an old comparison. |
How to make the final choice
- Identify the legal entity. Start the application and read the entity name, regulator and client agreement before depositing.
- Choose the platform first. Decide whether you need MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView or a proprietary interface.
- Calculate a complete trade cost. Use your normal position size, holding period and currency pair.
- Check financing. If you hold positions overnight, swap rates may matter more than the entry spread.
- Test funding and withdrawals. Confirm the method, processing time, name-matching rules and possible bank charges.
- Use a demo carefully. A demo can test the interface and order types, but it does not prove that live fills, slippage or spreads will be identical.
- Start small. After verification, fund only an amount you can afford to lose while you test live execution.
FAQ
Is IC Markets cheaper than Pepperstone?
Not universally. Their raw forex pricing is often close, and the lower-cost broker depends on the currency pair, trading session, account currency, platform, commission and overnight financing. Compare the complete round-trip cost rather than the minimum spread.
Which is better for beginners, IC Markets or Pepperstone?
Pepperstone may be the easier starting point because of its broad platform choice and generally accessible client experience. IC Markets can still suit beginners who specifically want MetaTrader or cTrader and understand raw-spread commissions.
Which broker is better for scalping?
Both are commonly considered suitable for scalping, subject to their terms and the rules of the entity serving you. Compare live spreads during your trading hours, execution quality, slippage, commission and any restrictions on your strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo IC Markets and Pepperstone offer MetaTrader?
Both generally offer MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, although the exact platform and account availability can depend on jurisdiction. Confirm the available platform before opening the account.
Can US residents open an IC Markets or Pepperstone account?
Do not assume they can. Leveraged retail forex and CFD availability for US residents is restricted, and global websites do not establish US eligibility. Check directly with the broker and the relevant US regulator.
Which broker has higher leverage?
There is no universal answer. Leverage is set by the legal entity, regulator and client classification. Retail clients may face strict limits, while professional or offshore arrangements can have different terms and protections.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose IC Markets if your priority is raw forex pricing, automated strategies and an execution-focused MetaTrader or cTrader setup. Choose Pepperstone if you value platform variety, TradingView access where available and a more general-purpose trading experience.
