For a light-data user, I’d start with Mint Mobile’s 5GB plan. For inexpensive unlimited data, Visible is a leading option if Verizon works well where you live. US Mobile is worth considering when network flexibility, hotspot, or international features matter more than finding the absolute lowest headline price.
This is a 2025 snapshot. Wireless prices, plan names, taxes, promotions, and renewal terms change frequently, so check the carrier’s page before enrolling.

My short list of cheap data plans
| Best for | Carrier or plan | Why I’d consider it | Important catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light data use | Mint Mobile 5GB | About $15 per month in 2025 coverage, with unlimited talk and text on T-Mobile’s network | The low effective price generally requires advance payment; taxes and renewal pricing matter |
| Cheap unlimited data | Visible | $25-per-month unlimited option with hotspot included | Hotspot speed is limited on the base plan, and data may receive lower priority during congestion |
| Network flexibility | US Mobile | Multiple network options, monthly and annual structures, and varied feature combinations | Terms, network availability, hotspot, and annual pricing must be checked for the exact plan |
| Custom low-data allowance | Tello | Customizable plans can cost less than unlimited service for very light users | It uses T-Mobile’s network, and hotspot and international terms are plan-specific |
| AT&T-network service | Cricket Wireless | Prepaid plans, taxes-included pricing on many advertised offers, and family-plan potential | Hotspot, speed restrictions, and data priority vary by tier |
| International travel | Google Fi Wireless | International features can justify the price for frequent travelers | Usually poor value for a domestic-only bargain hunter; taxes and fees are generally extra |
The right pick depends on your actual data use, local network performance, congestion priority, hotspot needs, international travel, taxes and fees, and whether you can prepay.

- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
- Under 1GB: Calls, messages, maps, email, and mostly Wi-Fi.
- 1–5GB: Light social media, music, navigation, and occasional video.
- 5–15GB: Regular social media and music, navigation, and some video away from Wi-Fi.
- 15–35GB: Heavy individual use, frequent commuting, or regular video streaming.
- More than 35GB: Heavy streaming, frequent hotspot use, or an attempt to replace home broadband.
Unlimited service is most useful when your usage regularly exceeds fixed allowances or you value not having to monitor data. It does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed, high-priority data or unlimited hotspot.
Best cheap plans by use case
Best for light users: Mint Mobile’s 5GB plan
Mint is the clearest fit for someone who uses modest data, stays on Wi-Fi, and wants to reduce a single-line bill. Its 2025 comparison price was approximately $15 per month, and the service runs on T-Mobile’s network. The low figure is typically an effective monthly price tied to a prepaid term rather than a normal month-to-month bill. See Mint’s plan page for the applicable term and renewal conditions.
Before choosing it, confirm T-Mobile works at your home, workplace, and regular travel destinations. Also compare the amount charged upfront—not just the monthly equivalent—and check the renewal price. An annual plan is less attractive if you may move, change networks, or cannot comfortably pay for a year at once.

Best cheap unlimited option: Visible
Visible stands out for a single-line customer who wants unlimited data without relying on a family discount. Its plans use Verizon’s network, and the base plan advertises unlimited hotspot at up to 5 Mbps; higher tiers offer faster hotspot service. Exact benefits are listed on Visible’s plan page.
The trade-off is that cheap unlimited does not guarantee the same experience as premium Verizon postpaid service. During congestion at places such as stadiums, airports, downtown areas, or busy commuter routes, lower-priority data can slow relative to higher-priority customers. Visible is also primarily digital-first, so it may be a poor fit if you want a retail store or extensive phone support.

Best for network flexibility: US Mobile
US Mobile deserves consideration when the network matters more than saving the last few dollars. Its plans have offered multiple network options, monthly and annual structures, and different combinations of hotspot and international features. That flexibility can help a customer choose a network that works locally or change networks when circumstances change.
Do not rely on an old review’s plan name or price. US Mobile’s offerings have changed, so compare the exact current plan, network configuration, monthly price, annual effective price, high-speed allowance, hotspot terms, and international benefits at US Mobile.

Best customizable plan for very light use: Tello
Tello is worth a look if you want to buy a small amount of data instead of paying for unlimited service. A tailored allowance may be cheaper for someone who uses Wi-Fi most of the time and needs only occasional mobile data. Tello uses T-Mobile’s network, so the same local-coverage test applies.
This is less compelling for heavy hotspot users or anyone who needs broad international roaming. Read the specific plan’s hotspot, international calling, and renewal details rather than assuming all Tello options include the same benefits.
Best AT&T-network alternative: Cricket Wireless
Cricket can make sense for customers who prefer AT&T’s network, want a prepaid brand with retail availability, or are comparing several lines. Its advertised pricing and included features vary by tier, and hotspot generally requires the right plan. Some advertised prices include taxes and fees, but verify the exact offer before checkout.

- Powerful Bass: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds have oversized 10mm drivers that deliver powerful sound with boosted bass so you can lose yourself in your favorite songs.
- Personalized Listening Experience: Use the soundcore app to customize the controls and choose from 22 EQ presets. With "Find My Earbuds", a lost earbud can emit noise to help you locate it.
- Long Playtime, Fast Charging: Get 10 hours of battery life on a single charge with a case that extends it to 30 hours. If P20i true wireless earbuds are low on power, a quick 10-minute charge will give you 2 hours of playtime.
- Portable On-the-Go Design: soundcore P20i true wireless earbuds and the charging case are compact and lightweight with a lanyard attached. It's small enough to slip in your pocket, or clip on your bag or keys–so you never worry about space.
- AI-Enhanced Clear Calls: 2 built-in mics and an AI algorithm work together to pick up your voice so that you never have to shout over the phone.
Cricket is not automatically the cheapest choice for a single line. Its advantages may be more meaningful for a family or for someone who values store support over the lowest possible monthly equivalent.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Best for frequent international travelers: Google Fi Wireless
Google Fi is a specialist recommendation, not my default cheap-plan pick. Its pricing structure and international features can be valuable for someone who regularly travels abroad, needs international data, or wants flexible data billing. Google explains its plan and international rules in its support documentation.
For a domestic-only user who consumes little data, Fi’s higher recurring cost and generally separate taxes and fees can outweigh those benefits. Distinguish calling from the United States, roaming in Canada or Mexico, international data, texting abroad, and long-term overseas use: they are not the same benefit.
What “cheap” should mean in a fair comparison
Compare the total cost and the service you will actually receive, not only the large number in an advertisement.
- Advertised monthly price: The starting figure shown by the carrier.
- Effective monthly price: The annual or multi-month cost divided by the number of months.
- First-year cost: Particularly important when a discount requires prepayment.
- Renewal cost: Introductory pricing may not continue.
- Taxes and fees: Some prepaid offers include them; others add them at checkout.
- Activation and SIM costs: Include these in the first-year total.
- Eligibility: A price may require autopay, BYOD, a port-in, a new line, or a limited promotion.
Public 2025 comparisons from the California Public Utilities Commission and the FCC illustrate why advertised prices and included features need to be examined together.

Unlimited data has several different meanings
Before selecting an unlimited plan, find answers to five separate questions:
- Is there a high-speed allowance before speeds are reduced?
- Does the plan receive premium priority or may it slow during congestion?
- Is hotspot included, and how much high-speed hotspot data is available?
- Is video streaming restricted to a particular resolution or speed?
- Does unlimited service apply outside the United States?
A plan can be unlimited for ordinary phone data while offering limited hotspot, lower-priority traffic, or reduced speeds in particular circumstances. Two plans with the same “unlimited” label can therefore perform very differently in a busy cell.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network choice matters more than the carrier logo
Most low-cost carriers lease access from one of the three major networks:
- Verizon: Visible, Total Wireless, and other Verizon-based brands.
- T-Mobile: Mint Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Tello, and Google Fi in its domestic network configuration.
- AT&T: Cricket Wireless, Consumer Cellular, and some US Mobile configurations.
An MVNO’s coverage map may resemble the host network’s map, but the experience can differ because of roaming access, congestion priority, supported bands, local conditions, and plan rules. A national coverage map is a screening tool—not proof that service will work indoors at your address.
Check coverage at home, work, school, and along regular travel routes. If your phone supports eSIM, a trial or second line can be a safer way to test a network before porting your primary number.

Hotspot: included does not mean suitable for home internet
Look for four details: whether hotspot is included, its maximum speed, whether it draws from a high-speed allowance, and whether the cheapest tier supports it at all. Visible’s base plan is notable for including hotspot, but its advertised speed is limited to up to 5 Mbps.
Even an unlimited hotspot feature may not reliably replace home broadband. Video calls, large downloads, multiple connected devices, and network congestion can make the experience inconsistent.
Annual plans can be cheaper—and riskier
Prepayment lowers the effective monthly rate, but it is not the same as paying monthly. Consider an annual plan only if you can afford the upfront charge and expect to remain satisfied with the network and carrier.
Ask what happens if you port out early, whether unused service is refundable, when introductory pricing ends, and whether renewal is automatic at a different price. A lower effective rate is not a bargain if it creates financial strain or locks you into a service you have not tested.
Do not forget the phone cost
A cheap service plan can be offset by an expensive handset. “Free phone” offers commonly involve a new line, an eligible port-in, a trade-in, a qualifying plan, or monthly device credits that stop when you leave.
Compare two-year costs for the service and the device together. A factory-unlocked phone with broad U.S. LTE and 5G compatibility may cost less overall than accepting a carrier phone tied to promotional credits. Confirm that your phone supports the carrier’s bands, eSIM or physical SIM requirements, VoLTE/HD Voice, and 5G where applicable.
How to switch without losing your number
- Check compatibility and unlocking. Confirm that the phone is paid off or eligible to unlock and works on the new network.
- Collect transfer details. Get the old carrier’s account number, transfer PIN, and billing ZIP code. Check whether a device-promotion balance would be forfeited.
- Buy the SIM or activate eSIM. Follow the new carrier’s activation instructions.
- Start the port while the old account remains active. Do not cancel first.
- Test the new line. Check calls, texts, mobile data, voicemail, and—if relevant—hotspot and international functions.
- Confirm completion. Only after the port finishes should you verify that the old line has closed and review the final bill.
Ports commonly fail because the account number, transfer PIN, billing ZIP code, or account status is incorrect. An expired PIN or a suspended old account can also cause problems.
Which plan should you choose?
| If you… | Start with… |
|---|---|
| Use less than about 5GB and can prepay | Mint Mobile’s small-data plan |
| Want one inexpensive unlimited line | Visible, if Verizon works well locally |
| Want to compare network options or need a broader feature mix | US Mobile |
| Use very little data and want to customize the allowance | Tello |
| Prefer AT&T, need family pricing, or want retail support | Cricket Wireless |
| Prefer T-Mobile and want a major prepaid retail brand | Metro by T-Mobile |
| Travel internationally often | Google Fi Wireless |
| Need simpler plans and support for an older adult | Consumer Cellular, while accepting that it is usually not the absolute cheapest option |
For most readers, the practical decision is simple: choose a small fixed-data plan if you use little data, choose Visible for low-cost unlimited service where Verizon performs well, and investigate US Mobile when network flexibility or extra features justify a more detailed comparison.
