AI resume builders can save time, but they do not remove the work that matters most: supplying accurate experience, checking every claim, and choosing a format that employers can actually read. A 2023 test of five tools—Rezi, Resumaker.ai, Teal, Kickresume, and ChatGPT—used the same fictional applicant and a real Meta software-engineering job listing. The results were mixed: Kickresume and ChatGPT received the strongest marks, while Teal produced the weakest ready-to-send draft.
That test did not measure interviews, job offers, or salary outcomes. It judged whether the resulting resume and cover letter could be submitted without editing. Several prices and features have changed since then, so the findings are best used as a practical comparison—not proof that one tool will get you hired.
What the original test actually measured
The applicant, “Tamsin Smith,” was fictional but deliberately well-qualified. The profile included two Stanford computing degrees, a Twitter internship, Google software-engineering experience beginning in 2019, and local scouting leadership. The tools were asked to create application materials for a real Meta software-engineering vacancy.
The test produced these scores:
| Tool | 2023 test score | What that score meant |
|---|---|---|
| Rezi | 3/5 | Usable, but required noticeable editing |
| Resumaker.ai | 3/5 | Produced a workable draft with problems |
| Teal | 2/5 | Less suitable to send without corrections |
| Kickresume | 4/5 | Strongest dedicated builder in the test |
| ChatGPT | 4/5 honorary | Strong writing, but formatting required another step |
None of these ratings represents a hiring probability. A resume score is not an interview score, and an “ATS-friendly” label is not a guarantee that every employer’s applicant-tracking system will parse the document correctly.

1. Rezi: best for job-specific editing and ATS-conscious formatting
Rezi is designed around tailoring a resume to a particular vacancy. Its current workflow lets you start from scratch, upload a PDF or DOCX, import LinkedIn information through the Rezi Chrome Extension, or use the conversational AI Resume Agent.
For a targeted application, choose Target Resume and enter the job title, company name, and job description. Rezi also offers an AI Bullet Point Writer, AI Summary Generator, AI Keyword Targeting, ATS Resume Checker, and AI Cover Letter Generator.
How the current summary workflow works
- Complete or import your resume.
- Add the target job description.
- Select a previous role or enter the target job title.
- Choose the skills you want to emphasize.
- Click AI Writer Ready.
- Review, regenerate, edit, and save the version you can verify.
Rezi’s current listed pricing is $0 per month for one resume and three PDF downloads. Pro is listed at $29 per month, while the Lifetime plan is $149 one time. The free plan includes the AI Resume Writer and AI Resume Editor, but the usage and download limits matter if you are applying for many roles.
The original test gave Rezi 3/5. Its main advantage is control: it encourages a clean, single-column layout and makes job-description keywords visible. Rezi warns that two-column designs may be read out of order or skipped by some parsers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere are two important risks. Imported formatting can transfer incorrectly, especially when the source document uses unusual layouts. Also, AI-generated summaries and bullets are drafts. Check dates, employers, job titles, technologies, and achievements line by line.
2. Resumaker.ai: simple entry point, but verify the final cost
Resumaker.ai currently presents a more traditional builder. Its public navigation includes Resume Templates, Resume Examples, CV Examples, Cover Letter Builder, and account options. The CV builder exposes buttons for Create My CV, Upload CV, and Create My Resume, and advertises an AI Engine that can auto-complete information.

- Made in United States
The site says users can start for free. However, its publicly accessible pages do not reliably confirm the current price for downloading a completed resume. The $0.99 download price reported in the 2023 test should not be treated as a current fact. Check the payment screen, renewal terms, and cancellation policy before entering card details.
In the original test, Resumaker.ai scored 3/5. The generated cover letter reportedly contained a leftover “[Company Name]” placeholder and relied heavily on openings such as “I am” and “I have.” That is a useful warning about proofreading, but it is a historical observation rather than confirmation of the current builder’s output.
From a budgeting perspective, a tool advertised as free can still become expensive if the download is paywalled or if a trial converts into a subscription. Save a copy of your resume in DOCX or plain text before paying, and inspect the checkout terms rather than assuming “free” means free to export.
3. Teal: useful job matching, weaker as an automatic resume writer
Teal takes a foundation-first approach. Instead of creating a separate resume from nothing for every application, you build a comprehensive resume containing your relevant experience and then generate tailored versions.
Current Teal workflow
- Open a resume in Resume Builder.
- Open the Job Matcher tab.
- Select a bookmarked job, search by title or company, or manually add the job description.
- Review the surfaced keywords.
- Toggle relevant bullets on or off.
- Review the sections and export the tailored version.
Teal marks included keywords in green and missing keywords in red. Its Job Matcher can also suggest a bullet for a missing keyword: hover over the keyword, select the magic pencil icon, choose the position, add or select keywords, review the generated options, and choose use bullet or regenerate.
The core Resume Builder, Job Tracker, and Chrome Extension are advertised as free forever. Free users can access Job Matcher, but they see a limited view of surfaced keywords; Teal+ users receive unlimited keywords.

Teal distinguishes between a Resume Score from its Resume Analyzer and a job-specific Match Score. Those numbers measure different things. A high Match Score can simply mean that your document contains the language in the vacancy; it does not mean you are qualified or that the employer will respond.
The original test scored Teal 2/5 and reported that it treated U.S. work authorization as a hard skill. That particular behavior should not be assumed to be a current bug. The continuing concern is more general: Teal warns that AI-generated bullets may invent metrics. If a suggested bullet says you reduced costs by 32% or managed a $1 million budget, delete or replace the number unless you can prove it.
4. Kickresume: strongest dedicated builder in the original comparison
Kickresume received 4/5 in the 2023 test. Its current AI resume workflow is straightforward:
- Sign in and open My Documents.
- Select New resume with AI.
- Enter your name and most recent job title.
- Click Continue.
- Choose a template.
You can also select + New Resume for a manual build, import from LinkedIn, use an example, or choose Rewrite Sample with AI. Other tools include an AI Resume Writer, AI Cover Letter Writer, AI Resume Checker, AI Resume Rewriter, and section-level rewriting.

The original test found the cover letter grammatically clean but too short and missing important details from the resume. Again, that was a 2023 result, not a guaranteed current defect. The practical lesson is still sound: compare the letter with the resume and job description before sending it. A polished but generic letter can be less useful than a shorter letter containing one specific, truthful accomplishment.
5. ChatGPT: flexible and inexpensive, but formatting and privacy are your responsibility
ChatGPT can perform the writing and tailoring work without forcing you into one resume template. Start a chat, open the tools menu, select Add photos or files, and upload your existing resume or the job description. You can ask it to identify relevant keywords, rewrite bullets using only supplied facts, draft a summary, or create a cover letter.
The free plan currently includes limited access to file uploads, data analysis, Canvas, and some models. Free users have a stated limit of three file uploads per day, although OpenAI says limits may be reduced during peak periods. Each file has a 512 MB hard limit, and text or document files are capped at 2 million tokens. Failed upload attempts may count toward the upload limit, which can produce an “upload limit reached” message sooner than expected.
ChatGPT’s Canvas documents can be exported using the Download button in the upper-right corner, including PDF, Markdown, and Word formats. That reduces the old need to paste the answer into a separate builder, although you still need to inspect page breaks, spacing, headings, and contact information.
ChatGPT received an honorary 4/5 in the original test because its writing was strong. Its weakness was presentation: plain text is not automatically a professional resume. A good prompt also cannot compensate for incomplete input. Give it exact dates, measurable accomplishments you can substantiate, technologies actually used, and the target job description.
Privacy deserves attention. Before uploading a resume containing your address, phone number, employment history, or other personal information, review Settings → Data Controls. OpenAI says consumer content may be used to improve models when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Settings and retention practices can change, so check them immediately before uploading sensitive information. You can also remove unnecessary details from a working copy and add your contact information only in the final document.

Which tool is the best value?
| Priority | Most suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tailoring one resume to a specific job | Rezi or Teal | Both expose job-description keywords and matching tools |
| Templates and an all-in-one document builder | Kickresume | Combines templates, AI writing, checking, and cover letters |
| Flexible rewriting with minimal commitment | ChatGPT | Can analyze your files and follow detailed instructions |
| Basic guided resume creation | Resumaker.ai | Offers templates, examples, uploads, and an AI-assisted builder |
| Lowest initial cost | Teal or ChatGPT | Both offer meaningful free functionality, subject to limits |
Do not choose solely by the advertised score. Consider how many applications you expect to submit, whether you need PDF exports, whether a subscription renews automatically, and whether you can cancel after producing the documents you need. For a single application, a free workflow may be enough. For a lengthy search, compare the total cost over the number of months you expect to use the service—not just the promotional monthly figure.
A safer AI resume workflow
- Build a fact sheet first. List employers, dates, titles, education, tools, certifications, and accomplishments. Separate verified numbers from estimates.
- Remove unnecessary personal data. Do not upload your full home address, government identification numbers, or information unrelated to the application.
- Give the tool a clear constraint. Ask it not to invent metrics, employers, technologies, qualifications, or dates.
- Use the job description for relevance, not exaggeration. Add a keyword only when your real experience supports it.
- Check every generated bullet. Compare each claim with performance reviews, project records, portfolios, or your own memory.
- Use a simple layout. A single-column resume with conventional headings is generally safer than a design-heavy or two-column document.
- Export and inspect the actual file. Open the PDF on a phone and computer, check page breaks, and copy text from the PDF to see whether the order remains sensible.
- Keep your own master copy. Store a verified DOCX or plain-text version so you can switch services without rebuilding your work.
Bottom line on the five tools
Kickresume and ChatGPT were the strongest options in the original test, but neither result means either tool improves hiring odds by itself. Rezi is attractive for structured, job-specific editing and clear ATS-conscious formatting. Teal is particularly useful when you want a master resume, job tracker, and keyword-matching process. Resumaker.ai may be convenient, but confirm export pricing and inspect the final document carefully.
The financially sensible approach is to start with a free option, create one accurate master resume, and pay only when a paid feature solves a real problem—such as repeated exports, more AI requests, or a template you genuinely need. Never pay for an “ATS score” as if it were a hiring guarantee, and never submit an AI-generated claim you cannot defend in an interview.
FAQ
Did the test prove that any AI resume builder gets people hired?
No. The test rated whether the resume and cover letter appeared ready to send. It did not run a controlled application experiment, measure interview responses, or verify a job offer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which of the five tools is free?
Teal advertises its core Resume Builder, Job Tracker, and Chrome Extension as free forever, while ChatGPT has a free plan with file and usage limits. Rezi has a $0 plan with one resume and three PDF downloads. Resumaker.ai says users can start for free, but its current public pages do not verify the download price. Kickresume has free accounts with limited AI uses.
Can an AI-generated resume pass an ATS?
No tool can guarantee that. A clean, single-column layout with standard headings is generally safer, but employers use different systems. Scores from Rezi and Teal are guides for content and matching, not universal ATS simulations.
What should I check before submitting an AI resume?
Verify every date, employer, title, skill, degree, achievement, and metric. Remove placeholders, correct formatting and page breaks, compare the resume with the job description, and make sure the cover letter includes specific details that are true.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: AI resume builders are drafting and editing tools, not job-offer machines. Use a free plan first, keep a verified master resume, review privacy and billing terms, and treat every generated sentence—including impressive metrics—as untrusted until you confirm it.
