In an August 2024 interview, she joked that “no one got paid anything” and that she basically got free sandwiches, while also saying she received no backend participation. The remark is not proof that she or every cast member earned literally nothing.
What Blanchett said about her Lord of the Rings pay
Blanchett made the comment during an August 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, where she and Gina Gershon were promoting Borderlands. In the show’s Plead the Fifth segment, Cohen asked which film had given Blanchett her biggest paycheck and guessed The Lord of the Rings. The Los Angeles Times reported her reply: “Are you kidding me? No,” followed by, “No one got paid anything to do that movie. … I mean, I basically got free sandwiches, and I got to keep my [elf] ears.” Los Angeles Times, Aug. 8, 2024
Variety and The Independent report that Cohen also asked whether she received backend participation—additional compensation tied to a film’s performance or revenue. Blanchett answered, “No! That was way before any of that. No, nothing.” That answer concerns backend participation; it does not establish that she received no upfront fee. Variety · The Independent
Did she literally receive no pay?
That is not established by the reported exchange. The Los Angeles Times contextualized Blanchett’s line by noting that the cast received something, though apparently not the blockbuster-scale compensation viewers might assume. The reports do not disclose Blanchett’s exact fee, contract terms, or any other specific compensation she received.

In the same conversation, Blanchett said she had wanted to work with Peter Jackson, the director of his 1992 film Braindead, and that this was her motivation for joining the project. She also remarked, “Women don’t get paid as much as you think they do.” That was her broad personal comment, not a production-specific pay statistic. Los Angeles Times · Variety
Why the box-office total does not answer the salary question
The Los Angeles Times reported that Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy grossed $2.9 billion worldwide and that the first film grossed $898.2 million. Those are reported box-office gross figures, not actor-pay figures. Gross receipts alone do not show production costs, net revenue, contract terms, or how much any individual performer was paid. - Known: Blanchett played Galadriel in the trilogy and later reprised the role in The Hobbit films.
- Known: She said she received no backend participation in the exchange reported by Variety and The Independent.
- Not established: Her exact salary, whether she received other forms of compensation, or the precise pay arrangements for the full cast.
Variety separately reported that Orlando Bloom said in a 2019 interview that he was paid $175,000 for all three films. That is a secondary outlet’s account of Bloom’s statement, not Blanchett’s pay and not a basis for inferring what other cast members earned. Variety
