Hyundai Motor America reported 55,624 U.S. vehicle sales in January 2026, up 2% from January 2025 and its best January on record. The company said hybrid sales rose more than 60%, but did not publish a hybrid unit total. It also credited broader electrified performance and SUV strength, so the release does not establish that hybrids alone caused the record.
What Hyundai reported for January
Hyundai Motor America’s February 3, 2026 sales release put January U.S. sales at 55,624 vehicles, compared with 54,503 a year earlier. The company described the result as its best January and a 2% year-over-year increase.
The figures are Hyundai Motor America’s reported U.S. monthly sales, not Hyundai Motor Company’s global total. Hyundai attributed part of the result to hybrid demand, while also pointing to electrified performance and SUV strength.
How much did hybrids contribute?
Hyundai said total hybrid sales increased more than 60% year over year in January. That is a growth rate, not an exact count: the release does not state how many hybrids were sold. It also does not provide a breakdown showing how much of the 55,624-vehicle total came from hybrids, so the contribution to the record cannot be quantified from the published figures.

- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. This allows AGM batteries to maintain their performance and capacity even in the hottest climates, They are also more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for hot or cold regions.
- Low Self-Discharge: AGM batteries have lower self-discharge rates compared to flooded batteries. Self-discharge refers to the loss of capacity that batteries experience over time when not in use. In hot climates, when the battery may need to be stored for extended periods or not frequently used, AGM batteries can better maintain charge, providing higher voltage output and easier engine start-up in any climate.
- Enhanced Safety: AGM batteries have a lower risk of acid leaks and spills compared to flooded batteries. This is because the acid is absorbed and held within the glass fiber mats, reducing the risk of corrosion or damage to surrounding components,this makes AGM batteries more durable and long-lasting, is also two to three times longer than flooded batteries. AGM batteries also have a lower risk of explosion and are safer to handle, making them ideal for high-performance vehicles.
Randy Parker, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, said hybrid demand was “the star of the month,” citing growth of more than 60%. That is Hyundai’s characterization of its sales results, not independent evidence that hybrids alone drove the increase.
SUVs and individual models
Hyundai said SUVs accounted for 77% of January sales. The model totals below are overall model sales unless specifically marked HEV; they should not be read as hybrid-only figures.

The Santa Fe HEV increase is a hybrid-specific result; its January unit count was not supplied. The broader Santa Fe figure covers the model overall. The contrasting declines for Ioniq 6 and Sonata also show that January’s gains were not shared across the entire lineup.

A later Hyundai Motor Company report published July 23, 2026 said global hybrid sales in the first half of 2026 rose 25% to 353,668 units, and that North America set first-half sales and hybrid-sales records. Those figures cover a later six-month period and a different reporting scope; they are context for the wider trend, not part of Hyundai Motor America’s January U.S. total.
