China’s OpenClaw boom created a real, if potentially temporary, hustle economy. Early adopters have reportedly earned money installing and configuring the open-source AI agent, selling refurbished Macs with the software preinstalled, running events, building related tools, and even helping users remove it.
The opportunity is less about selling an AI app than filling a supply gap: ordinary users wanted an autonomous agent, but many lacked the technical skills, suitable hardware, or confidence to install a tool with access to files and background processes. The result was a fast-moving market for setup, trust, support, and equipment.
One installation side hustle reportedly became a company
The clearest example is Beijing software engineer Feng Qingyang. According to MIT Technology Review Japan, Feng began experimenting with OpenClaw in January 2026, listed installation support on Xianyu later that month, and was reportedly handling 7,000 completed orders by the end of February. The reported price was about RMB248 per installation.
Those figures imply approximately RMB1.736 million in gross order value:

7,000 orders × RMB248 = RMB1,736,000
That is an arithmetic estimate, not verified profit or necessarily recognized revenue. It excludes labor, refunds, marketplace fees, taxes, advertising, cloud and API costs, hardware, and ongoing customer support. The same report says Feng’s operation expanded to more than 100 employees, but that exceptional growth should not be treated as a normal or repeatable benchmark for a new installer.
The important point is what customers were paying for. They were not simply buying a download. They were paying someone to make a complicated and unfamiliar system work.
What OpenClaw is—and why setup became a business
OpenClaw is described in the reporting as an open-source AI agent that can control a device and complete tasks autonomously. That makes it different from a conventional chatbot:
- A chatbot primarily generates answers in a conversation.
- An agent can interact with software, files, devices, and workflows to carry out actions.
That added capability can be useful, but it also creates a larger security attack surface. The exact capabilities depend on the configuration, connected services, permissions, and software environment; the available reporting does not independently verify every integration or operating-system detail.
For many potential users, the barrier was not interest. It was execution. Installation could involve terminal commands, developer platforms, account configuration, model or cloud services, and decisions about which computer should host the agent. A user who was comfortable asking an AI for help might still not be comfortable granting an autonomous tool access to a personal laptop.
That is the classic opening for a service business: demand arrives before expertise becomes widely available.

Why OpenClaw spread so quickly in China
The technical bottleneck was reinforced by a powerful social phenomenon. OpenClaw acquired the nickname “lobster,” and users began talking about “raising” or “keeping” one. That framing made a technical project feel like a consumer trend and gave people an easy way to discuss it online and offline.
The reported signals of the rush included:
- Three unofficial Shenzhen events reportedly drew more than 500 attendees each, with the largest cited as attracting more than 1,000.
- Entrepreneur and technology influencer Fu Sheng’s February livestream reportedly received 20,000 views, according to StartupNews.fyi.
- Tencent held a public event offering free installation assistance.
- The MIT Technology Review report described municipal support measures in Shenzhen’s Longgang district and similar measures in Wuxi, including computing credits and cash rewards for selected projects.
Those government-related details should be read narrowly. The cited reporting describes particular municipal initiatives; it does not establish a uniform national policy, the full eligibility rules, or whether the programs remained available.

The reporting describes power users, influencers, and sometimes venture capitalists gathering around the tool, while people with limited technical backgrounds—including lawyers, doctors, older users, and children at public support events—sought help getting started.
The businesses forming around the craze
Installation and technical support
Installation providers handled some combination of initial setup, account configuration, troubleshooting, remote support, and custom integrations. Reported marketplace listings on Taobao and JD ranged from roughly RMB100 to RMB700 for guidance and support packages, while the RMB248 figure came from one reported provider and should not be treated as a market-wide average.
The difference between a cheap installation and a useful service is what happens afterward. An installer may be responsible for model configuration, broken dependencies, account problems, updates, workflow design, and mistakes made by the agent. A one-time price can look attractive until support consumes the margin.
Refurbished and dedicated hardware
Some sellers reportedly offered refurbished Mac Minis and MacBooks with OpenClaw preinstalled. The commercial logic was straightforward: if an agent has broad access to a computer and runs continuously in the background, customers may prefer a separate machine rather than placing it on a computer containing personal or business files.

That separation can reduce the potential blast radius, but it does not automatically make the setup safe. Buyers still need to consider the operating-system reset, installer provenance, software modifications, credentials, network access, plugins, updates, and physical security. “Preconfigured” is not the same as “verified.” Apple’s official Mac mini page is a hardware reference, not an endorsement of OpenClaw compatibility or any third-party bundle.
Consultants and custom developers
Developers built tools around the ecosystem, including visual interfaces that show an agent’s progress and voice-chat functionality. Others helped businesses configure hardware, cloud accounts, and workflows. This is potentially a more durable business than basic installation because the provider is solving a customer-specific productivity problem rather than selling access alone.
Events, influencers, and private communities
Organizers and creators could monetize attention through workshops, sponsorships, paid communities, consulting leads, recruitment into private groups, software projects, and hardware or service referrals. The available evidence establishes the existence of large unofficial events and active communities, but not a standardized or verified training market.
Uninstallation and cleanup
A particularly revealing sign of a speculative rush is that some sellers reportedly began offering to uninstall OpenClaw. Techmeme cited remote or in-home removal services priced at RMB20–299, or approximately $2.80–$41.50, in March 2026.

It does show how quickly a new technology can create both an installation market and a remediation market when users are uncertain about what they installed or what it can access.
The security risk is part of the business model
The same feature that makes OpenClaw valuable—autonomous access to a device—also makes third-party setup unusually sensitive. Reported concerns centered on the agent’s ability to access files and operate continuously in the background, creating the possibility of data exposure if it is configured carelessly.

The risk is amplified by four conditions:
- Broad permissions: the agent may be able to read files, control applications, or use connected accounts, depending on its configuration.
- Unattended execution: background activity can make an error or compromise harder to notice.
- Unofficial installation: a customer may not know whether a downloaded package has been modified.
- Low technical literacy: the people most likely to need an installer may be least able to evaluate permissions and provenance.
Chinese cybersecurity authorities reportedly warned about OpenClaw-related risks. Other contemporary coverage cited restrictions or proposed curbs affecting some banks, state agencies, and state-run enterprises. The available source material does not establish a blanket public ban or a complete legal framework, so those reports should not be generalized beyond the institutions and measures described.
None of this proves that OpenClaw is inherently malware or that every installer is fraudulent. It does mean that customers are buying more than convenience: they are trusting a provider with a potentially privileged computing environment.

A buyer should ask for a written description of the service, not just a promise that the agent will be “installed.” Specifically, clarify whether the price includes:
- Installation only
- Model or API configuration
- Hardware
- Cloud hosting
- Custom workflows
- Security hardening
- Backups and recovery
- Ongoing support
- Removal or rollback
The provider should also explain which folders and applications the agent can access, whether it can send messages or make purchases, where credentials are stored, whether remote access remains enabled, whether actions are logged, and how permissions are revoked.
For a personal setup, a dedicated device or isolated environment may be preferable to a primary computer. Use a dedicated account, keep sensitive documents elsewhere, use separate credentials, restrict filesystem and network access where possible, review plugins and extensions, apply operating-system and dependency updates, and maintain a recovery plan.
Cloud deployment can simplify remote maintenance and scale better for providers, but it moves data and credentials outside the customer’s direct physical control and creates recurring costs, provider lock-in, and data-retention questions. A separate computer avoids some of those issues but adds hardware, maintenance, theft, power, connectivity, and refurbished-device risks. Neither model is universally safer on the available evidence.

Is this a genuine opportunity or an installation bubble?
It is both a genuine service opportunity and a market that may be vulnerable to a sharp correction.
The opportunity is genuine because the underlying problem is real: powerful agents are difficult to configure, and customers value someone who can make them useful and safe. But the early economics may be temporary. Once official setup tools improve, documentation spreads, or users lose interest, basic installation can become a commodity. Security warnings could also reduce demand, while customer support and liability costs could rise.
For providers, the main risks include:
- Data loss or unauthorized actions caused by a misconfigured agent
- Liability from handling credentials or sensitive files
- Support costs that overwhelm one-time installation fees
- Platform, marketplace, or regulatory restrictions
- Rapid commoditization as setup becomes easier
- Dependence on third-party models, APIs, cloud providers, and marketplaces
- Customer disputes over mistakes made by autonomous software
The reported 100-person expansion is evidence of a viral window, not evidence that every entrant can build a durable company. The available reporting is concentrated around the January-to-March 2026 surge and does not independently establish customer retention, recurring revenue, profitability, or market conditions later in 2026.
The broader lesson for the agent economy
OpenClaw’s Chinese boom illustrates a recurring pattern in technology markets: early money often goes to the people who simplify access, not necessarily to the creators of the underlying software. PC builders, cloud configurators, smartphone repair shops, mining-rig sellers, and no-code consultants all benefited from similar gaps between what technology promised and what ordinary users could implement themselves.
For AI agents, the valuable layer may ultimately be trust and management:
- Making the installation reproducible
- Explaining permissions clearly
- Limiting what the agent can access
- Monitoring its actions
- Maintaining integrations
- Recovering from mistakes
- Designing workflows that produce measurable value
If agent setup becomes simple, one-time installation revenue will likely shrink. The business may move toward security, workflow design, enterprise integration, maintenance, and compliance. That is a more durable thesis than buying hardware or reselling access during a viral spike.
