The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province estimated 300 tonnes of gold within 2,000 metres and projected more than 1,000 tonnes within 3,000 metres. The larger figure is a deeper estimate, not an additional amount to add to the 300 tonnes. Xinhua also reported an approximate valuation of 600 billion yuan (about US$83 billion), but that is not a confirmed mine value or proof of economic viability.
Where is the Wangu gold field?
The Wangu field is in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province, in central China. Xinhua reported the discovery on November 21, 2024, attributing the estimates to the Geological Bureau of Hunan Province.
How much gold was reported?
The announcement described more than 40 detected gold veins and gave estimates for two depth ranges:

What does the reported 138 grams per tonne mean?
Xinhua reported that ore in the 2,000-metre range contained a maximum of 138 grams of gold per tonne, citing ore-prospecting expert Chen Rulin. That is a maximum concentration, not the average grade of the entire deposit. The report does not state a representative average grade, so the maximum should not be compared directly with another mine’s average grade.
Is the US$83 billion estimate confirmed?
No. Xinhua attached an approximate value of 600 billion yuan, or about US$83 billion, to the deeper estimate. The report does not present that number as realized revenue, a mine valuation, or an independently verified economic assessment. A contained-gold estimate alone does not establish recoverable output, extraction costs, or whether mining would be profitable.

Is it Earth’s largest high-grade gold deposit?
The available reporting does not establish a verified global ranking. A December 2025 secondary headline used the phrase “Earth Largest High-Grade,” but the cited reporting does not provide an independent comparison supporting that superlative. It is more accurate to describe Wangu as a reported major discovery with depth-specific estimates.

Chen Rulin told Xinhua that “Many drilled rock cores showed visible gold,” and said a tonne of ore in the 2,000-metre range contained a maximum of 138 grams of gold. The statement describes observations and a maximum figure; it does not replace a full deposit-wide grade or economic analysis.
